How Did You Get Started?

I was always athletic as a kid. I was a runner and I played soccer. As a result, I was always in good shape. When I started high school I took up wrestling, I started training really hard with my brother, Orville Matherson and then I started to see tremendous gain in size and strength. With the help of my brother and coach I was able to make it to the Connecticut State Wrestling Championships. Soon afterwards I started competing in bodybuilding. This was in 1997. I won my first competition, the NPC physique teen competition and to my surprise I was the overall winner!

This got me started and I haven’t looked back since. I won every competition I’ve competed in since then and I’ve also won the overall in these competitions. My brother and I always compete together and we normally meet each other in the overall and at one point I thought he was going to win. He was in great shape and I really thought he was going to take it but I think that my size gave me the advantage that is something I benefited from at the time.

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

My workout plan varies based on what my goals are at any particular time. This is my general workout plan:

  • Monday: Chest and Shoulders
  • Tuesdays: Back and Biceps
  • Wednesdays: Legs
  • Thursdays: Taps,Calves and forearms
  • Friday: Off
  • Saturday: Tricps, abs, and cardio
  • Sunday: Off

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

I’m one of the bodybuilders who stay lean throughout the entire off-season, because fortunately, I don’t drink alcohol nor do I have cravings for sweets, desert etc. So take those two out of the picture, and that puts me at an advantage. I normally eat small meals throughout the day. I like to make my own meals and doing so I’ve sort of developed a very good relationship with “pam spray” and occasionally some olive oil. I normally would supplement my meals with Met-Rx or a Protein Bar. Normally, at nights before I go to bed I have some Designer Protein.

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

I like to use Designer Protein, Creatine, Met-Rx and Glucosamine

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

Bodybuilding is my hobby! I love it because it makes me feel good about myself. I enjoy going to the gym, I enjoy eating healthy and I enjoy sharing my knowledge with clients whom I personal train and I’m happy when I see the results from their hard work.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

Like most serious bodybuilders I’ve dreamed of becoming Mr. Olympia one day. However, I’m not sure anymore that I want to get to that level. First, I plan on getting my pro card. I would love to travel and promote the sport in anyway I can, and some day own a gym and start a Bodybuilding Competition of my own through one of the different franchises. At the moment, my brother and I are building a bodybuilding website called naturalbodybuilders.com and we hope to get this done by the end of November because we are adding a calendar with natural bodybuilders and their workout secrets.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

Work hard and your bodybuilding dreams will come true! Remember that eating right is as important as lifting so combine the two with a desire to achieve and I assure you that your hard work will be rewarded.

Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?

Sean Ray, My brother-Orville Matherson and my friend-Scott Collins.
