I was always thin and in shape growing up (I graduated high school at 119 pounds) and didn't have to work hard to maintain it. Fast forward 30 years, I looked in the mirror and was honest with myself; I was overweight and out of shape. I was embarrassed to go to the beach or be seen in public with my shirt off. After a physical, my doctor said I needed to lose weight and wasn't happy with my blood work numbers. That's when I got serious.
I had to take care of myself immediately or it could be too late. It was time to take my life back. I told my wife, who also needed to lose weight, that we should do it together. We joined a local gym, but went in halfheartedly. We had good intentions, but working out still wasn't a priority. We didn't have focus or a plan. We hit some of the machines and the cardio equipment and our results were minimal. Then we found Bodybuilding.com where I saw an ad for Kris Gethin's Body By Design.
I purchased Gethin's book and read the entire thing. I'm not an avid reader, but I knew this was going to help me get the results I was looking for. My wife also read the book so we both knew what to do and started following Kris' program. It was difficult to get into the swing of things; committing to the workouts every day and the change in our diets. After a few weeks, it became easier. We followed the Body By Design plan and made good progress on our goals.
We were addicted. The hardest part was starting and staying committed long enough to make it routine (if I miss a workout now, I feel like I'm missing out on something). My wife and I wanted more results and were ready to push the envelope with Kris Gethin's 12-Week Hardcore Trainer. It was more intense, but we were ready and followed it as close as possible. We waivered a bit during holidays, but we never got off track.
Before I started training, I ate once per day, but I learned to eat the right foods to keep my fire burning. I ate 5-6 meals per day and documented my progress. Sometimes my weight didn't change, but my measurements did. Utilizing Bodybuilding.com's tools kept me on track with where I wanted to be. It was a great motivator.
The diet was a constant battle. I gave it my full attention and focus to get through the day without cheating.
I want to continue on my journey to fitness happiness and success. It's a never-ending battle, but something that I enjoy and value.
I plan to compete in the near future and show the world how proud I am of myself and what I have to offer.
Don't be afraid to leave your comfort zone. The hardest part is getting started. Go to Bodybuilding.com and find someone who motivates you. Kris Gethin is awesome.
Some of his workouts may seem intimidating, but he always tells you to work at your level. You will be amazed at what your body can do when pushed.
Bodybuilding.com had everything I needed. It's the best fitness website on the Internet and provided me with daily exercise ideas and inspiration. The articles were great and BodySpace members were extremely encouraging.
