How Did You Get Started?

I started lifting weights at the age of 13. This may seem a bit funny but my motivation was to look like some of the comic book characters that I so admired as a child. I really didn't know what to expect at first, then I noticed the growth of my arms and shoulders and I fell in love with it. I then started reading up on bodybuilding, got serious about it and the rest is history. I was also boxing at the time and I loved that as well. However, I decided that I had to choose one over the other and of course, bodybuilding was the choice I made.

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

One thing I learned early on was that everything is not for everyone. You basically have to find what works best for you. I work out 4 times a week. I use a combination of strength training and basic powerlifting techniques. I'm bench pressing 455, and squatting up to 825 lbs. I begin all of my sets with 20 reps, then 10 reps, 8, 6, 4, and then 2-3 reps.

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

I haven't used supplements for over ten years. I am all natural and have been for some time. I believe in healthy eating, juices, egg whites, vegetables and fruits, carbs, etc. I use to use fat burners, amino acids and have tried Hydroxycut and some others. But I am happy to say that today I am natural. However if there are supplements that I find healthy and stimulating, I may give it a shot.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

I like the fact that in bodybuilding I can set goals and watch the results as I attain them. I must admit that I like both looking and feeling good as well. I must also admit that the compliments I receive does a lot to boost my self esteem and the joy that I bring to the eyes of youngsters is totally exhilarating. I coach a basketball and track team in my spare time. They think I'm a comic book or cartoon character at times. It's pretty amusing! They also see in me that they can attain any goals that they set for themselves. And, I'm hooked on the adrenaline I get after each and every workout. Competition is also a rush. Just standing there next to other guys who've worked just as hard as myself and defeating them is awesome.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

I plan on opening "Joe Flexx" gyms all over the country someday. I think that if people only knew the joy that bodybuilding has given my life, then they too will want to experience that and who better to teach them than I. Currently I am a personal trainer. Another goal of mine is to possibly break some powerlifting records in the near future.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

First and foremost you have to set goals for yourself and do anything necessary to attain them. There are days when my body is so tired and physically, I may not want to go to the gym. However, mentally, I don't allow myself to submit to those feelings and once I'm in the gym, I'm grateful. Don't ever give up on your dreams, work hard, often and believe me, in the long run you'll definitely appreciate it.
