I was a scrawny little wimp. That was the base of my motivation. I was never bullied or anything harsh like that, but I got plenty of comments from my friends. When girls started chiming in, I had to do something about it.
I look back at the start and don't know how I stayed motivated with minimal results. I lifted in a garage in the middle of the winter with a small propane heater.
When I got my first hint of results, I was hooked. I didn't know if it would work. Because I was so skinny, I thought I was doomed with no chance. But I was kidding myself; anything is possible with drive and dedication.
Instead of beating around the bush with motivational slogans, I'll tell you how I really accomplished my goals. I got out of bed every morning, went to the gym, and busted my ass whether I wanted to or not. I ate when I wasn't hungry and didn't get wasted on the weekend because I had to get up in the morning and go to the gym; it wasn't an option. As long as I looked better than the day before, I knew I was getting somewhere.
Lifting weights turned me into a man. I stopped acting like a little kid and found dedication and drive in my life. I was battling drug and alcohol addiction and am proud to say I'm completely sober now. I had too much free time and no goals in life before. I can honestly say lifting weights helped me beat my addiction.
Lifting will always be part of my daily life. I competed in two bodybuilding shows and plan to continue. I want to inspire lifters and give them hope for huge gains with patience and dedication. I hope to at least inspire one person with my story.
Don't expect to turn into Arnold in one week. You need to have patience and confidence to accomplish these goals. Always tell yourself you can do it. Your first taste of results will keep you dedicated. Remember, your diet is just as important as lifting.
