The day I decided to take ahold of myself was the day my hubby snapped a picture of me at the beach on vacation in 2011. I remember saying, "Oh goodness, I look awful." He said, "You don't look bad." I asked him if he was blind. I decided right there that I was going to do something. I didn't realize I let myself go that bad. I didn't want to be 40-plus and flabby.
I have always been small. I only weighed 88 pounds until I got pregnant with my first daughter in 1994. I gained more than 70 pounds with her, even though 9 pounds of that was her. It took awhile, but I lost most of it. Then, in 2003, I got pregnant with my second daughter and gained 45 pounds.
Even though I wasn't 100 or more pounds overweight doesn't mean I didn't feel like crap. It was hard to walk up steps. I stayed tired and was lazy. I decided to change that.
With the help of Christy Allen, I found the tools to transform my body so I looked the way I wanted. I did online training with her, which was great because I could work out on my time.
My girls were a great help. They made sure I stayed focused and motivated. My 8-year-old made sure I drank my water and my 17-year-old pushed me to hit the gym and cook healthy meals. She also worked out with me and provided a much needed spot, which I loved every minute of.
My friends and family motivated me by saying how great I was doing and that I was motivating them. I have great family and friends and couldn't have asked for more. As for Christy Allen, I will always be grateful. She is an awesome trainer to work with.
The diet was tough at first. Preparing everything so it fit into my work schedule was difficult, but once it all came together it was great.
I enjoyed working out so much that I'm now studying to be a personal trainer and hope to help people who think it can't be done. I did my first ever competition on November 3, 2012, which was a great experience. I'm ready to do it again. I plan to keep this up for as long as my 42-year-old body can.
Always plan. That is key. Make sure you have what you need for dieting and training. Don't feel like it can't be done because it can. If I can, anyone can. I was the biggest critic there was. Don't let anyone say you can't do it because most of them are just jealous.
Keep doing what you're doing and show them how it's done. People laughed at me when I told them how I was doing it. After seeing my before and after photos it wasn't so funny to them anymore.
Bodybuilding helped me tremendously. Being able to find and watch certain exercise videos was amazing. Jamie Eason's recipes are great too. I love every aspect about Bodybuilding.com.
