How Did You Get Started?
I've always been interested in fitness but never really knew how to get started. This past January, my weight hit 142 and I decided I had to do something about it. I met a wonderful personal trainer through a good friend of mine and ever since then, I have made huge progress in just 8 months. The South Beach Diet helped me get through the sugar and white flour detox that my body desperately needed. After that first month was over, healthy eating became much easier for me and I started to see real results.
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
I train at the gym 5-6 days per week, doing cardio every day. I really enjoy lifting weights so I try to break my cardio up between sets or before and after lifting. An example day for me would be to do 15 minutes of cardio when I first get to the gym, usually the treadmill for a jog. Then I will work my legs, butt and calves with a mixture of workouts, reps and weights. Some days I do lighter weights with more sets and others I like to run the rack.
The leg press is my favorite machine because you can hit so many different muscles in your legs, butt and calves all from that one machine based on foot placement. Tuesdays and Thursdays are usually my double cardio days. I will go spinning at lunch and then hit the gym after work to really get some calories burning. I guess what I am trying to say is that I don't have a specific workout plan each week, rather I like to mix it up and hit different body parts based on how I am feeling each day.
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
Clean eating has really worked the best for my body. My body really didn't respond well to the low carb first 2 weeks of the South Beach Diet. I only ended up losing 3 pounds in the first 2 weeks despite following the program exactly. My husband lost 12 pounds in the first 2 weeks, talk about frustrating!
I stick to whole grains, protein and fruits/vegetables. Over the summer, I ate a lot of watermelon because it fills you up and is a great hydrator. I eat something every 3 hours and am now starting to not eat after 8PM. I have to admit I am horrible about eating breakfast and really have to make a conscious effort to get something in my stomach. I do notice I tend to binge at night if I don't get something first thing in the morning.
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
I never used to love fitness. It wasn't until my body started changing and I starting lifting heavier weights at the gym. There is something empowering for me as a woman to do bicep curls with 25 pound weights next to the man using 30 pounds. I love the way I feel about myself. I love the way it has improved my relationship with my husband. I love that I never get sick anymore, and I love fitting into my skinny jeans once and for all!
What Motivates You To Follow A Healthy Lifestyle?
My experience in the last 9 months really keeps me motivated. Thinking about what I used to look like or how I used to feel helps me get my butt to the gym. I don't have any children but we would like to have them someday and I want to give them a long healthy life with me.
What Made You Want To Achieve Your Goals?
The most important thing that made me want to achieve my goals is my husband. I wanted to do it for him, our relationship and me. I was sick of complaining that I was "fat" or my butt was too big. I didn't like how I looked or felt and it directly affected my relationship with him. It's also the goal that keeps me going.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
Compete, Compete and Compete. I love these bikini competitions and I'm determining if I might want to train for a figure competition in 2010. I will be doing the Arnold Classic Amateur in March 2010 and will really up my training in January to prepare for that competition. My ultimate goal would be to grace the cover of Oxygen magazine.
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Know that if your body isn't in 110% ready for the competition, someone else's will be and they will place higher than you. Work your tail off and be ready a few weeks prior to your competition so you aren't stressing a week before on how to get the look you want in only a week. Also, when you are backstage for the morning show, everyone is getting ready to go on stage for their few minutes of fame. It may seem as if people are not nice but after that morning show, everyone opens up and it is really a great time!
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
Bodybuilding.com has the best prices on all the things I needed for my competition. Their shipping is really quick and I never had to worry about getting my stuff on time. BodySpace has been great to me and I have met a lot of motivating people who have been supportive and helpful during my journey. The forums also help when you are looking for specific information. There is such a wealth of information and knowledge on Bodybuilding.com - I don't know how any other site could compete!
