How Did You Get Started?

I was a very active teenager. I cycled 10 miles a day, did Karate twice a week, rowed for Twickenham on a competitive level, ran twice a week and also worked out in the gym almost every night (The Dojo and the Rowing club both had small gyms in them). I was incredibly fit.

Then I went off to university and fell into bad habits. All my friends were drinking lots and I ended up spending more time with a pint in my hand then I should have. Add to that one of the most horrific diets ever conceived by man and I got a little sloppy. My favorite meal after a night of drinking was an entire bag of frozen onion rings with about half a jar of mayonnaise!

When I returned home for the summer I was shocked at how out of shape I was a vowed I would do something about it. I joined a gym and started working out. I had very little idea as to what I was doing at first but tried to think logically as to how best to use my time.

I devised a 2 on one off system where you split the body into push, pull and legs. Everything is trained every 4 or 5 days with one session coming after a full days rest and the other coming after another training day. This routine gave me really good gains. I started buying workout magazines and changed my routines to fit in with what the recommended splits suggested.

My gains slowed dramatically. I was returned to my original split a year later and was surprised how quickly my strength and growth increased.

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

I have always wanted to approach training from as logical a standpoint as possible. I have read everything and anything I can get my hands on, from Mentzer's books, to Ploquin's articles. I think a lot of things work quite well for a while, but they all need to be changed up once in a while.

For me the most important thing is consistency. That and a good diet will give you the gains. It's going off the wagon that slows progress far more then the wrong routine.

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

I eat every 2-3 hours. My meals consist of clean carbs, protein and moderate fats. I have tried all kinds of diets from the junk food diet, where I got to my heaviest ever but got winded walking up the stairs, to super low carb high fat pre-contest diets.

I'm currently eating about 400g carbs, 250g protein and about 50g fats. I get my macros from clean sources like turkey and oats, eggs, basmati rice, broccoli. For now this seems to be working better for me than anything else. But I'm not someone who won't try something else. I'm quite open to new ideas.

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

Food. It's that simple. I don't use many supplements. Maybe a little whey protein mixed in with my oats in the morning, but that's only if I'm pushed for time and can't cook my eggs. Supplements are there to supplement your diet, nothing else.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

I wish I knew! It just seems to click with me. I took a year off to do powerlifting and managed to get myself to the world championships where I placed 3rd.

I won a British Junior title, set 2 British records and a European record, came 2nd in three senior British finals, yet at the end I realized I just wasn't getting anywhere near the same buzz as I was when I was onstage.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

For now it's to show up at the British championships better than I did at the qualifier. My long term goals I keep close to my chest. I'm a little superstitious and don't want to jinx anything.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

Consistency. Bodybuilding is lots of small steps, there are seldom any giant leaps.
