How Did You Get Started?

I have always been active growing up. I was involved in ballet, jazz, tap and tumbling as well as riding and showing western pleasure quarter horses. I was involved in volleyball and track thru Jr. High and early years of high school but stopped to continue showing horses which was what I lived for. In college I studied athletic training which is when I really started to pay attention to my physique and my physical conditioning. One of the reasons being was that I felt I owed it to my athletes to be able to perform the physical duties of that job without question in order to care for them on the field or court quickly.

After I began to take better care of myself during this time I began to notice that I had the genetics to train and change my body very easily. It wasn't until I was in graduate school that I figured out that I could see myself on stage like the women that I admired in the magazines. My life was changed from that point on. I was determined to be a figure competitor someday and began to try to train for it.

After 2 1/2 years of hit and miss diets and the delays to getting on stage I finally reached my goal and this year I competed in my first two NPC shows, winning my class at my second one. Now there is no turning back for me. I'm hooked!

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

Even during the off season I stick to my training pattern. Thank goodness that I am an early bird because I am usually in the gym by 3:30 AM before I go train my first client at 5:30 AM. My mornings are when I do part of my cardio and my abs. I will run for 45 minutes after I do 3 different abs exercises. My go to abs moves are hanging knee raises, decline Russian twists with a 4lb medicine ball and v-ups.

I do 3 sets of 15 for each of those. Another part of my training is that I do some type leg exercises everyday. Typically at the end of my primary lift for that day I will end the work out with walking lunges; down and back is 1 set; 4 sets of 20 reps superset with stiff leg deadlifts for 4 sets of 25 reps, then light standing calf raises for 8 sets of 25 reps. An example weekly afternoon workout plan looks like this:

Day 1: Back/Biceps

Day 2: Shoulders

Day 3: Legs

Day 4: Chest/Triceps

Day 5: Heavy Back

Day 6: Plyometrics

I like to use the card game that Jamie Eason uses just change up the exercises each time I do it. It's a love/hate with this since I'm not a fan of plyometrics but they are great for my body. This way it stays interesting with the reps and I never know what I will draw.

3 card draw and add them up to get your total amount of reps for the exercise. You draw 3 for every exercise that you do and go thru it as many times as you can. Your face cards are 10, and Jokers are 1 or 11 to make your reps high. Example of the exercises that I might use for the day:

Day 7: Cardio

This is my active rest day when I'm training for competition. I do about 2.5 hours of cardio and usually split it between 2 things.

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

I actually enjoy eating what's on my meal plan for contest prep 8 weeks out. I alternate days between three meal plans with just a slight variation in carb intake. My favorite is when I get oatmeal for breakfast! Although it's the lowest carb day, it is surprisingly filling. It doesn't seem like much when it's written down.

Meal 1: Post AM Cardio

Meal 2:

Meal 3: Post Workout

Meal 4:

  • 6 oz tilapia
  • 8 spears blanched asparagus
  • 1 cup hot cinnamon apple weight loss tea with meal or 30 min after

Meal 5:

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

I would have to say that sticking to a clean eating program is the main reason I have achieved the gains that I have but the supplements that I add into my daily regiment also help. I am a big fan of ALR Hyperdrive which helps give me that extra boost for the day's workout. I usually take this about an hour after I wake up in the morning and it will last me the entire day. I use Isopure protein powder and I take amino acids and fish oils daily. I'm also a major fan of SciFit ZMA which I take nightly before bed for recovery and a good night's sleep.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

Being fit and healthy has so many meanings to me. I love fitness because it simply changes people's lives! I'm a personal trainer and watching my clients change right before my eyes and for them to feel good about themselves has to be one of the most rewarding attributes of my job! I feel that by my being fit and healthy I am leading a good example for them as well. Fitness is a way of life for me and I am glad that I have chosen that path.

I feel energized, happy and proud of what I have accomplished with training my body. I like watching my own body change and improve in ways that I never thought it could. I think a fit, healthy, muscular body is very attractive and so I work hard to make that happen and it makes me happy to reap the reward and benefits of that hard work!

What Motivates You To Follow A Healthy Lifestyle?

I love how a healthy lifestyle has changed my life personally and professionally. Being fit and healthy makes me feel great about myself! I feel confident, comfortable and attractive. As a personal trainer, my clients are able to see how a healthy lifestyle and hard work can change your life and it motivates them. I am very up front with them and will show them how I use to look two years ago compared to how I look now.

This shows that I have had to work just as hard as they have to keep my body in check. When they achieve goals that they have set and let me know that I have helped inspire them to get to that goal that is a huge motivator to keep my lifestyle on track!

What Made You Want To Achieve Your Goals?

Even though I had a few very important people in my life that I wanted to achieve my goal for, ultimately achieving the goals that I have achieved thus far is definitely for me. Wanting to get into the shape that you need to be in to be on stage and be a good competitor is just one part of the goal, actually going through the hard work in the gym and being disciplined with the meals and getting to stand on stage is the other part of it. Not everyone can do that and that is a major challenge that I wanted to take. That drive and determination helped me be able to get on stage the first time, the feeling of the accomplishment and the drive to make myself an even better competitor is what helped me fully achieve my goal.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

I plan on continuing competing for as long as my body will allow me too! I found something that I am very passionate about and can do well in and only see improvements coming my way. This coming season I plan to compete in some national competitions as well as some local ones. The ultimate goal is to earn my pro card and stand next to the women that I admire so much. I would also love to break into the fitness modeling industry and become a sponsored athlete. Positive thinking, positive living, hard work, and dedication will get me to that point.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

I have learned that if this is something that you want to go for then you shouldn't be afraid to do it! Find someone that is able to help you learn the ropes and get you in the condition you need to be in a healthy way. You will come across people that will tell you what you are doing is unhealthy, wrong, weird, or even disgusting in their eyes. Don't let them get to you or stop you from what you are trying to achieve! A lot of people don't understand what you are trying to do, but it's ok.

Surround yourself with people that are positive and supportive and keep your mind focused on the performance and the prize. It's all worth the hard work, the long hours in the gym, and the tough dieting. You can do it if you want it bad enough. This is what separates us from everyone else in the gym.
