How Did You Get Started?

When I started college I was at my highest weight of 275lbs at 5'7". I was obese and not happy with myself. I did not like the fact that I wasn't comfortable in my own skin. Big clothes started to fit tighter and tighter and I was starting to need even bigger clothes. I would go up some stairs and get out of breath. That scared me; I was only 19 years old! Once I realized I had to change my life, I joined a gym close to my house.

Once there, I would (like most beginners) do all the machines that were in one row, every time I went; which at the time was 3 times a week. After a while I met a great guy, who would become my mentor, a retired bodybuilder, who put me in the right direction. We trained together for some time until a shoulder injury took him out of the gym.

Training at this fitness center for a couple of years gave me a good foundation and what I thought was a good idea of what bodybuilding was. But somehow I felt that being in that place limited my ability to train the way I wanted, intense. That's when I made the switch that would change my life. I found out about an old school gym located about 10 minutes from my house.

Jakked Hardcore Gym said the sign outside. It looked like a warehouse but nothing too intimidating. I walked in and I was welcomed by the nicest couple of Rottweilers and a big guy who happened to be the owner. Since I stepped into Jakked, I realized I knew absolutely nothing about bodybuilding. Once there I met competitive bodybuilders, both local and national level, record breaking powerlifters, and competitive strongmen.

Once I started training there, I had great guidance and learned how to train and feel my muscles being trained. Also, being in this environment was the push I needed to train with a goal in mind and get ready to compete for the first time.

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

I currently train a body part every day. My workout plan looks like this:

Day 1: Legs
Day 2: Chest
Day 3: Back
Day 4: Off

Day 5: Shoulders
Day 6: Arms
Day 7: Off

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

My body responds best to a high protein and low carb diet with small meals every 2.5 hrs.

Once or twice a week I change the protein source to steak or lean ground beef. Usually on my days off from lifting. When I eat lean ground turkey I do not add the oil.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

I love bodybuilding because it is a way of life. To the true bodybuilder, we live, dream, and breathe the sport. My passion for this sport is very hard to describe. It is my life. I love how demanding it is both offseason and while dieting for a show. It is demanding both mentally and physically. I love how it is a sport and also a performing art. I love the art of posing, moving with grace on stage, and showing your hard work.

What Motivates You To Follow A Healthy Lifestyle?

The mirror is what motivates me the most. Being able to see the process of shaping my body from a vision into reality. You cannot hide from the mirror and it will never lie to you. Also, my past. Coming from a completely unhealthy lifestyle, staying fit, in shape, and healthy is my biggest motivation to continue. Plus, I feel much better!

What Made You Want To Achieve Your Goals?

I am a very passionate person and once I set my mind on a goal I focus all my attention, determination and drive to achieve it. I was tired of being out of shape and lazy so I promised myself I would change my life. A nice addition was having people around me who didn't think I could achieve it. Who thought I would fail. Those people fueled me even more when taking a step forward was tough.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

I recently competed in a local show and was very happy with how I looked so now it is time to take some time to make improvements and step on stage next fall. I want to step on a national level show and look like I belong on that stage! But I have to qualify first, and I plan to do so next time I compete.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

Surround yourself with positive people, especially when dieting for a show. Having a positive mindset will have a huge effect on you, both mentally and physically. Wake up every morning and tell yourself: today is a good day. Say it over and over again until you smile, and you will have a good day! (My prep coach told me that when I started doubting myself during my first diet for a show.)

Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?

Since I started bodybuilding I have had tremendous admiration for Kai Greene. His mental approach to this sport is what motivates me the most. When I am getting ready for a competition and I practice my posing, I study the way he moves and it has helped a lot. His approach to training is also quite unique and it is something I try to use myself on daily basis.
