How Did You Get Started?

I lost 37 pounds of body fat and lost my job shortly thereafter. I decided to pursue what my passion was, helping others achieve a healthy lifestyle as I did. I became a personal trainer and had the goal to take my body to a level it's never been at. I had some friends telling me I should do the local competition that is hosted every year in our area and I kept saying, "No I'm not ready for a show." I then ran into another person at the gym who told me to do it and I went to get details and decided to do it, with 3 weeks left to prepare.

I'm big on the Law of Attraction and felt it kept finding me. I loved the entire experience. My body was the most fit it's ever been and I loved being onstage and pushing my body to a new level.

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

That is a constant learning process! I would say what works best for me is a strength circuit where I am lifting heavy but moving in between lifts to get my heart rate up. Also, HIIT 5 times a week really tore the fat in my legs down a lot! Sweat is my friend. If I'm not sweating, I don't feel I'm working hard enough.

My concentration for my next competition is shoulders and back, so I try to hit them twice a week hard.

Day 1: Shoulders/Chest

Day 2: Legs/Glutes

Day 3: Back/Biceps/Abs Circuit

Day 4: Triceps/HIIT

Day 5: Shoulders/HIIT

Day 6: Abs Circuit/Cardio

Day 7: Off

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

A very clean, lower carb diet. My body responds quickly and great to lower carbs, I really only put about 5 pounds on after the show when I began eating more carbs in the morning. Lots of protein and green vegetables! Tons of water! I've been reading a lot up on the Paleo Diet that our ancestors naturally followed and think there is something to not eating processed foods. It works for me.

Since I have just begun preparing for competitions, my diet is as such. I am on lower carbs to get lean, as I do not have enough time to build right now. So when I begin to prepare for the show after my next, I'm going to take 6-9 months and my diet will look a lot different. More carbs. I think it is important to note that. So many people don't realize that people eat different things or ways for different reasons. I want that to be understood in what I'm about to write!

If I had enough time before a show to build muscle, I would have 1 scoop casein protein powder at night, and like I said my diet would have a lot more carbohydrates in it. This is what I did to lean down with little time before a show. The reason I did a show with little time is for the experience. My next goal after my second show is to go 6-9 months building muscle and really preparing for a show by having more time!

Morning: 7:00 AM

  • 1/2 cup oatmeal with pumpkin spice seasoning
  • 1 scoop of whey protein powder with water or 5 egg whites with splash low sodium hot sauce

Snack: 10:00 AM

Lunch: 1:00 PM

Snack/Pre-Workout: 4:00 PM

Pre-Workout: 4:40 PM

Workout: 5:00 PM

Post-Workout/Dinner: 7:00 PM

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

I like taking White Flood before working out because it gives me that extra boost I want while lifting. I push harder!

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

It changed my life. Simple, yet complex. It gave me a new body, a new job; a new life. I made this happen of course, but choosing to lift was the best thing I ever did when I began working out. I'm not skinny fat, I'm fit and tough. Since lifting, I never looked back; I want to keep toning up and will never stop lifting or setting goals for myself in the area of fitness.

What Motivates You To Follow A Healthy Lifestyle?

Working hard and becoming stronger externally, but mostly, internally. I have gained so much confidence that I'm not sure I would have ever found if I didn't choose a healthy lifestyle. I feel happy with whom I am and my choices I have made and that right there gives me the strength to pursue goal after goal ahead of me.

When we push ourselves and face our fears, no matter what we are doing, you will learn inner strength. It just comes with the territory. It is harder to be fit and healthy than it is to have an unhealthy lifestyle. Granted, the other side to that is people who are unhealthy go through a lot of self guilt, I went through it. But, I would much rather learn to overcome hurdles and become stronger by choosing to progress as a person, even if it's harder to achieve!

The thing about taking the hard path is that you begin to master taking control of that path of most resistance. You learn to love it and you push aside any way of least resistance. After you learn to take on challenges, you only find yourself wanting to find more.

What Made You Want To Achieve Your Goals?

I'm turned on by achieving new goals! I am a perfectionist. I have always wanted to be the best. In grade school, I remember competing in my head against another girl in volleyball for MVP, it happened in high school and it's been with me ever since I was a kid really. I think what it's about now or at least what I know it's becoming about, is being the best with myself. I learned this at my first competition. At the end of the day, I'm learning that I have nothing to do with anyone else, and the only thing I must do is be the best I can be, both physically and as a person. The two go hand in hand for me now.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

I will compete in my next competition on October 2nd, 2010. I have 2 months to prepare. I then want to plan to compete 5-6 months into 2011 so I have time to gain muscle where I need to gain it. I want to help others achieve healthy results as well. I love helping others learn this lifestyle.

I am very interested in the psychology behind people who live a healthy lifestyle versus people who do not. I want to research that and run with it.

My ultimate goal in this area of my life is to be a fitness model and also write for one of our amazing health magazines. I currently write articles for and love writing about the power of the mind, how to achieve your goals, etc. I want to get my body in the best shape possible and maintain that.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

Your attitude is everything. You decide how far you'll take yourself, whether you're in the gym lifting or choosing what food you will eat. Have a great attitude and learn to accept any positive feelings that go through you in regards to yourself. Having pride in yourself is powerful. Find every ounce of confidence you can through your experience and you will only grow more confident in yourself!

Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?

Erin Stern hands down. That girl does leaps and bounds (she works outside the box) and has a smile and presence to kill. She's the total package.

I check the SuperSite out for competitions and look at Transformations and featured people all the time. I use BodySpace for motivation and to network with others. It's a powerful tool!
