How Did You Get Started?
Fitness and being active have always been a big part of my life. Growing up it was gymnastics, track & field, and cross country. In college I picked up my love for aerobics and group exercise classes in fact I was even a step aerobics instructor for a couple years.
After college I needed an outlet for all of my energy and joined a local gym to stay in shape. Joining a local gym turned out to be the best idea as this is where I met my husband Doug Martin. Doug really helped give me a foundation for weight training. While I knew some of the basics, he helped me understand proper form, the concepts of sets, and what exercises should be paired together.
After I started getting the hang of it, I was hooked. I also have to credit my husband for sparking my interest in figure competitions. He was preparing to compete in bodybuilding at the 2007 Indianapolis NPC Bodybuilding and Figure championships and encouraged me to compete in figure.
This was one of the best experiences of my life, I placed 1st in my class and won the Overall title. Needless to say, I'm hooked again.
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
Typical Weight Training Week:
- Monday - Quads/Hams
- Tuesday - OFF Abs/Cardio
- Wednesday - Shoulders/Chest/Triceps
- Thursday - Back/Biceps
- Friday - Glutes/Calves/Thigh
- Saturday - OFF Abs/Cardio
- Sunday - Shoulders/Triceps
Contest prep approximately 45 minutes of cardio 5 to 6 times per week.
Off season approximately 20 to 30 minutes of cardio 4 to 5 times per week.
I generally spend about 45 minutes weight training and follow up with cardio switching between various machines: treadmill, stair stepper, step mill, elliptical.
Favorite Training Program:
Legs Quads/Hams and Calves/Glutes/Thigh (I split my leg workout into 2 training days)
Monday - Quads/Hams:
- Barbell Deadlift
- Smith Machine Squat and one leg smith machine squat
- Hack Squat
- Leg Extensions
- Leg Press
- Seated and lying leg curls
Usually I pick 4 out of the six exercises and complete 3-4 sets of 10-16 reps.
Friday - Calves/Glutes/Thigh:
- Glute Kickback
- One leg cable kickback
- Thigh Abductor/Adductor
- Calf Press on leg press machine
- Standing and seated Calf raises
Usually I pick combinations of the above exercises and complete 3-4 sets of 10-16 reps.
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
I believe that nutrition is one of the most important aspects of staying fit and healthy. I enjoy eating healthy as a lifestyle. It helps me feel good about myself and has so many benefits. Eating the right type of food is also a great supporter to all of my training efforts, without proper nutrition my training would certainly suffer.
My nutrition plan changes throughout the year depending on if I am preparing for a contest. Currently I am eating 6 meals a day that include things like oatmeal, whey isolate protein, flank steak, chicken, salad/green veggies, sweet potatoes, and plenty of EFA's.
One of the most important keys to my successful nutrition plan is the love and support from my husband. He prepares most of our meals and develops nutrition plans that work best for me.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?
Fitness is something that has always been in my heart and mind. It gives me goals to work towards and makes me feel happy and confident. I often feel compelled to be the best me I can be and staying healthy and strong certainly support this.
Here is a quote that I came across that helps express my drive towards fitness:
In other words you have the strength inside you and you can do it!
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
Here are my planned competitions for 2008:
- Jr. National Bodybuilding/Figure/Fitness Championships (Chicago, IL) June 2008
