How Did You Get Started?
Every year the show is extremely anticipated by those who have attended in the previous years followed by newcomers eager to see their friends compete. That's exactly how my interests were sparked to even attempt this sort of thing. My roommate and I had gone 2 years in a row and I always found myself so ridiculously fascinated by all of the competitors!
Now, I was never the most "fit" person... so the idea for me to even attempt anything like a bodybuilding competition was far from a possibility to me! I just figured that my particular genetic shape was impossible to ever sculpt into anything remotely close to a bodybuilder! Unbelieveably enough that exact attitude was why I decided to put myself up to the challenge!
Once the goal/idea was embeded in my mind, I wanted to start right away! It was really hard to get going especially around the holidays because we all know the sweet temptaions that can make dieting seem torturous! So, I went to a good friend of mine (Matt), who had tons of bodybuilding experience under his belt.
I asked him to help me with a strict diet and excercise plan. It was extremely difficult to become so disciplined with every single thing that entered my mouth, but little by little it became 2nd nature. Next thing I know my measuring cups became as common as a lipstick in my purse! I was very determined to see some changes in my body.
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
Well starting off I had a lot of body fat to get rid of so I made sure I did cardio 6-7 days a week. I would usually mix it up between the treadmill, stairstepper, and the elliptical, but mostly the stairstepper to better my booty! I would always alternate muscle groups when lifting too. Heres a typical week:
Day 1: Upper Body/30-45 min. cardio/ab's
Day 2: Cardio/ab's
Day 3: Lower Body/30-45 min. cardio/ab's
Day 4: Cardio/ab's
Day 5: Back/30-45 min. cardio/ab's
Day 6: Cardio/ab's
Day 7: Rest!
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
It was a pretty typical diet for someone in training... 6 meals a day, whey protein shakes for 2-3 of those meals, lots of chicken, tuna, broccoli, spinach, green beans, beans, soy milk, oatmeal, egg whites, low carb wraps, peanut butter, green tea, unsalted mixed nuts, and cold-mill flaxseed.
At first I was kinda scared to mix up my diet, but with lots of research I found lots of fun recipes and ideas for healthy high protein snacks!
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
I benefited the most from ON's Whey Protein Powder along with my daily vitamins which included a multivitamin, vitamin c, biotin, potassium, and ginseng. I also put a tablespoon of flaxseed into my oatmeal in the morning which was a great energy assist.
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
Since I am very new to the whole bodybuilding scene, I probably can't understand it as much as someone who has been doing it for years. But I will say that I do have a new appreciation for it and I am thankful that I participated in this experience because it has completely changed my perspective of the sport of bodybuilding in general.
Had I never challenged myself, I would have missed out on all these new interests that have come to my attention. This whole thing has actually changed my potential future because I now plan on re-directing my studies.
I plan on studying the subjects of nutrition and kinesiology and hopefully someday I will be an established nutrition consultant/personal trainer... who knows! So I can say I do love bodybuilding for that!
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
I'm not too sure what I will do next. There's an upcoming show that takes place this November, but I am not sure where my life will be at when that time does come. My goal is to do at least one more show in the near future. Once that happens I'll take it from there.
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Something I kinda found to be really true in my particular situation was to set myself achievable goals and always strive to achieve them.
If you can do that you will always be successful. Keep up the hard work because there are always people like me that are watching you compete and being inspired to attempt the impossible!
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
I am a huge Monica Brant fan! I think she is unbelievable and her drive/ambition is so inspiring! In all of her competitions she exudes sheer precision with her stage presence and I strongly admire that! If there was anyone I would desire to build my body to resemble it would, without a doubt, be her!
