How Did You Get Started?
I was 14 years old and I had a 38" waist. My brother Dan was a bodybuilder. He inspired me and wrote up my first workout.
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
I do a modified HIT workout. I do about 6-8 sets for all body parts except back which gets about 18-20 sets. I don't go until complete failure. I quit when my form gets sloppy. I hit the weights 3 times a week. Legs get their own day on Sundays. I do Chest, Shoulders and Arms on Tuesdays. Back has it's own day on Thursday. A typical leg workout would be as follows:
Sample Leg Workout:
Seated Calf Machine: 1 set of 50, 1 set of 35 and one set of 10-12
Leg Extensions: 2-3 sets of 20-30 reps
Smith Machine Squats: 2-3 sets of 12-15 reps
* Lunges: 1-2 sets of 15-20 reps, each leg
Lying Leg Curls: 2-3 sets of 15-20 reps supersetted with Straight-Leg Deadlifts: 2-3 sets of 15 reps
* Note that with lunges I do all my reps in one leg, rest one minute then do the other leg, rest another minute and go back to the first and so on.
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
Protein, moderate fat and low carbs. When dieting I have about 350 grams of protein, 150 grams of fat and 100 grams of carbs a day. I diet for 16 to 23 weeks for a contest. I do a ton of cardio and have a cheat meal of protein and fat once a week right up to the show. It is usually at Golden Corral and consists of 2-3 huge plates of meat, vegetables and creamed spinach. I never cut out dairy or salt. I drink 1-2 gallons of Crystal Light or sugar free Tang a day. For a contest I carb up with six grapefruit eaten every 3 hours the Friday before the show and on the day of the show. It is a natural diuretic and it is the safest carb you can eat.
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
*6 of each at each meal.
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
I was overweight as a kid and got picked on. It is a classic Charles Atlas story. Back then I liked it because it got me girls and notoriety. Now I like it for the challenge of trying something new at every show to improve my overall package.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
2007 NPC Excaliber on Dec 1st - I am going to do the Over 40 division. I would also love to do the over 40 in the Emerald Coast and the Southern States shows someday.
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
If it is your 1st contest or if you haven't competed in a while, diet first and pick your show second. You have no idea how long it will take you to get in the condition you want to be in.
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
Bob Paris, Francis Benfatto, Prince Fontenot, Hamdullah Aykutlu, Dorian Yates, Berry DeMey, Marvin Ward, Michael Lockett, David Dearth, Skip LaCour, Mark Dugdale, Phil Heath, Steve Reeves and Lee Labrada.
