How Did You Get Started?
My first introduction to our "Weight World" was a poor attempt to lift an old rusty barbell off a friend's basement floor. Couple that with Steve Reeves's movie Hercules and I was hooked! Of course Santa brought me a 110 lb barbell-dumbbell set for Christmas!
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
Through the years, I feel I've tried every exercise routine ever invented! Now at my age, I'm using a four day split, three exercises per bodypart, two sets each, 12 to 15 reps, with light to moderate poundage.
- Flat Dumbbell Bench Press: 2 sets of 12-15 reps
- Incline Dumbbell Bench Presses: 2 sets of 12-15 reps
- Cable Flyes: 2 sets of 12-15 reps
- Dumbbell Shoulder Presses: 2 sets of 12-15 reps
- Side Laterals: 2 sets of 12-15 reps
- Rear Delt Raises: 2 sets of 12-15 reps
- Front Dumbbell Raises: 2 sets of 12-15 reps
- Overhead Extensions: 2 sets of 12-15 reps
- Pressdowns: 2 sets of 12-15 reps
- Kickbacks: 2 sets of 12-15 reps
- Pulldowns: 2 sets of 12-15 reps
- Barbell Rows: 2 sets of 12-15 reps
- Dumbbell Pullovers: 2 sets of 12-15 reps
- Dumbbell Shrugs: 2 sets of 12-15 reps
- Smith Machine Squats: 2 sets of 12-15 reps
- Leg Press Or Hack Squat: 2 sets of 12-15 reps
- Leg Extensions: 2 sets of 12-15 reps
I finish with light Abs and Heavier Calf Machine lifts for five sets. I'll generally do a half hour of Aerobic activity pre workout to burn a little body fat.
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
I eat healthy every day with no regrets! Not too many 2nd chances at my age! My mornings I'll start with about three eggs, half cup of oatmeal with scoop of whey protein, half cup of Spinach (remember Popeye!) a few pitted prunes and of course a cup of Java!
After I train, it's 50 grams of Whey and multi-vitamins. Three hours later, it's canned tuna or a chicken breast with a small salad, potato or rice. Three more hours, it's another meal, usually with Tilapia or Salmon. I try to drink as much water as I can remember to take. A plan like this will keep you in pretty good shape throughout the year
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
Well, back in the "old days" we inhaled four hamburgers from the local "burger joint", washed down with a gallon of milk, right after pushing through Larry Scott's latest workout! Then of course came soy Protein. But I can honestly say I've gotten the best gains from multiple meals of good nutritious foods.
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
With bodybuilding, you improve on your natural, God given abilities; running, jumping, lifting, and at the same time playing Michelangelo! You use your knowledge and sweat to mold or reinvent yourself, what a wonderful sport!
What Motivates You To Follow A Healthy Lifestyle?
I want to continue to "reap the rewards" into my much later years. It's a wonderful world, with so many places, emotions, and things yet for me to visit.
What Made You Want To Achieve Your Goals?
I like to set reasonable, short-term goals. As far as bodybuilding, on stage I want to feel I've done everything, naturally possible to be in my best shape.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
Again, short term. This year I will be competing and hopefully placing in Natural Bodybuilding shows, in different organizations. Long term, to be the recipient when Jack LaLanne passes the sword!
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Set short term goals and don't get distracted. Be as consistent as possible with your nutrition and routine. Keep learning and most of all, share with others what you've learned! Most of my gym time is spent helping others get a proper start with exercise.
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
Steve Reeves of course! My role model would be a Master's Olympia; AAU Mr. America named Jim Morris. Jim always went out his way to show all us "new kids" proper form, routines, nutrition, you name it. He was always upbeat, always giving. Feeling "blessed" myself and Jim being my role model, I try on a small scale to be a "Johnny Appleseed" of bodybuilding, always giving back!
What Features Do You Use On Bodybuilding.com?
One stop shopping for a Bodybuilding Website! I've referred this site well over a hundred times to gym members, everything from articles, diets, shows, to tanning oils! I put my "act" for my contest together in just two weeks! Bodybuilding.com taught me how to diet, shave, tan, oil, told me where to buy trunks and best of all, how to pose! Bob Cicherillo personally showed me how to pose from your video. I took home the gold, SNBF's Super Grandmaster champ in their emerald classic, June 2009!
