How Did You Get Started?

At age 23 I begin to exercise after I discovered I had high blood pressure. At this point in my life I was obese, tipping the scale at 235lbs., 80 pounds over my current body weight. I slowly began to run, first, just a few feet, then, after a few months, several miles.

The weight started to come off and I felt more energetic. I began to compete in intermediate distance road races and finally ran my first marathon in 2000 at the age of 41. At about this time, I began weight lifting and hired a trainer to give me some tips. Two years ago, I decided to get more serious about lifting and found an excellent trainer who put me on the bodybuilding track and I was hooked!

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

I have found that a four day split works best for me. Every workout is different, but very intense. I always go from compound movements to isolation exercises and burn out in the end of my workout with a machine exercise. During the off season, I still do cardio twice a week and when dieting for a comp I up it to four to five times a week.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

I love bodybuilding because of the discipline, dedication and concentration it requires. I must carefully plan my workouts which not only help me to grow but also help me to release daily stress. I must be disciplined enough to follow the nutrition plan in order to gain mass or, in-season cut down. I also like what bodybuilding has done for the way I look. I am proud of the accomplishments I have made and the changes my body has undergone. I would never have believed I could go this far in bodybuilding 3 or 4 years ago. Now, I see that if I work hard and stay focused on my goals I will be able to achieve.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

I plan on competing this season in various shows on the East Coast and I am hoping to win my first Master 40 + division. In the off-season I want to put on more mass and hopefully compete at the high end of the light weight division.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

I would like to tell other bodybuilders to stay on track by focusing one's attention on the workouts and diet. Even when the going gets tough and the diet seems impossibly difficult, one must stay focused on the goal. Sometimes we need to just keep moving forward even if it seems it is at a snail's pace. Each meal, each workout brings us closer to our goals.

Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
