Amateur Fitness Competitor of the Week: Amy Yastremski

Amateur Fitness Competitor of the Week: Amy Yastremski! - Pics and info and more!

How Did You Get Started?

I have always had a desire to compete in a figure competition. I eat healthy and lift weights on a regular basis. My husband, Jeff got me in touch with my trainer, Kisha Wilson. Starting in June of 2010 I began training with Kisha and Quincy Roberts for my first competition, the 2010 NPC Mid-Atlantic Classic in October.

To everyone's surprise I finished first in Open Figure Class B and won the Overall in Open Figure. I also took home a trophy for best presentation in Open Figure. Still riding high from that win, I entered the 2010 NPC Elite Muscle Classic in November. I finished second in Open Figure Class B in that show. I was so excited to have done so well in my first two competitions.

Everyone that helped me knew that I would do well, but me. I did not believe in myself. I have always struggled with low self-esteem and being extremely shy. These wins gave me the confidence in myself that I had been lacking for such a long time. I have been hooked ever since.

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

I started 16 weeks from my first competition because I was not sure what to expect, and how my body would respond to the workout routine that Kisha had for me. We started by working on a 6 day on and one day off rotation focusing on each major muscle group separately. For example: day one I worked shoulders; day two was back; day three was a rest day; day four I worked chest; day five was arms, and day six was legs.

I worked abs in when I could, at least three times a week. I would rest 30 seconds between repetitions and no more than 2 minutes between exercises. Each week I would either increase my weight or repetitions. The best thing about my exercise program and my body was that I did not have to focus on any cardio until three weeks before my competition. Cardio is my least favorite thing. I would rather lift weights any day than get on treadmill.

Day 1: Upper Body
Day 2: Lower Body
Day 3: Cardio Only
Day 4: Back/Chest
Day 5: Legs
Day 6: Shoulders/Arms
Day 7: Abs

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

As I mentioned earlier, I have struggled with being extremely shy and having self-esteem issue my whole life. Working out has given me a lot of confidence in myself that I didn't have before. I know that I have just begun competing, but when I am on stage, it allows me to face my fears head on, and that makes me feel so good about myself.

I know that I have accomplished so much more than just earning a trophy. I also love the feeling you get after a great workout. The final results, when I am on stage are unbelievable. I look at my progress pictures and still can believe what a little hard work and dedication can do. I am amazed at the transformation that I was able to achieve and I really did not have to change much to make the gains that I did.

What Motivates You To Follow A Healthy Lifestyle?

Again looking at what I have accomplished with a little hard work and dedication is amazing. That is what keeps me going. I also know that I am doing something good for myself. I feel better on the inside and look great on the outside.

What Made You Want To Achieve Your Goals?

I love being in the gym working out and leading a healthy lifestyle. It only seemed natural to pursue this lifestyle by competing in figure competitions. These competitions also have helped me build confidence in myself that I have never had before. I have been able to face and overcome some of my fears. This has definitely made me stronger on the inside and the outside.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

I hope to continue competing and would love to earn my pro card. I would also love to make the cover of Oxygen or other fitness magazines. I am looking forward to embracing the figure and body building industry. I have so much to learn, I have only just begun.
