How Did You Get Started?
Last summer I was reading Oxygen magazine and after seeing all of the fitness girls, I said that I would like to try to compete. I looked at the contest calendar in the back of the magazine and went to a contest to check it out. It was there that I met IFBB pro, Tanji Johnson, who it turns out was starting a fitness team to compete in Spring 2004. I got hooked up with a trainer, got on a diet and have been training hard ever since. I qualified for nationals in my very first competition, which was so exciting! I love performing and fitness is a great outlet to show off my training accomplishments and perform a high-energy routine. The second I stepped on stage I knew that I wanted to make fitness my life, to train hard and lead a healthy lifestyle.
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
I'm currently trying to add size to achieve the best possible shape for my next round of contests in the spring. I'm lifting heavier weights with lower reps and doing more presses, squats and dead lifts. I have a four-day split:
- Day 1: Back/Tri
- Day 2: Legs
- Day 3: Chest/Bi
- Day 4: Shoulders/Traps.
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
I follow a diet that incorporates Protein, carbs and fat, by eating 6-7 meals a day that include egg whites, oatmeal, chicken, broccoli, sweet potatoes and brown rice. In the off-season I have cheat meals for lunch and dinner on the weekends and I'm not as strict about what I eat as long as I'm getting enough protein. So, I have to have the occasional Jamba Juice smoothie or Oreo McFlurry!!!
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
Swole Creatine has helped me put on a lot of muscle in the last couple of months. I feel that I can lift more, and combined with a higher calorie diet I'm building muscle pretty easily. I also really like to have Muscle Milk as my post workout shake. I'm also taking BCAA's, Max-Lean (fat burners), Glutamine and a Multi-Vitamin.
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
My workout is the part of the day that I look forward to the most. Going to the gym or gymnastics gets me so pumped up and excited which carries through in all aspects of my life. I love feeling stronger and seeing my body change in ways I never thought possible. The thing that I love most about fitness is that it challenges me both mentally and physically and no matter how hard it gets (i.e. dieting), I keep coming back for more. I know I'm hooked for life!!!
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
My current goal is to put on 8-10 pounds of muscle to compete next spring 2005. I am also working on gymnastics trying to learn new skills and increase the number of tricks I can put in my next routine. I would like to go to nationals in July 2005, so I'm training hard right now and always. My ultimate goal is to turn pro within the next couple of years and someday maybe you'll see me on the cover of Oxygen magazine!!!
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
The thing that has helped me the most is to surround myself with people that support fitness and support me. I have the best people in my life that were there to help me with training, diet, contest prep, emotional ups and downs that come with dieting and they were there to celebrate my accomplishments with me. I know I could have done it alone, but it would have been hard and I wouldn't have had all of the smiling faces of my friends and family to cheer me on when I am up on stage.
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
I think all of the fitness pros are amazing and so talented, but the most influential to me is Tanji Johnson. Being a member of her fitness team helped me to learn everything I needed to step on stage and do my best. Her energy in life and on stage is an inspiration to me and I aspire to have a high-energy routine like the ones she performs. I also really admire Kelly Ryan and Jen Hendershott, for their dedication to the sport and awesome routines.
