Set my new standards for whey protein isolates. Taste awesome with milk and dissolves very very well.
My protein powder intake is typically split into my primary/recovery whey isolate drink that I consume in the morning and evenings (after workouts) and supplementary whey blends with isolate and concentrate manage daily hunger control. What makes Six Star Whey Isolate+ special is that unlike some other blends, it has a low fat and sugar profile (2g each, respectively). This has allowed me to use Whey Isolate+ as both a primary and supplementary protein. That is, it offers more versatility as a product that others that I have used. Mixability is fair to good. It mixes better with milk, and it requires a heart shaking in a shaker cup, which is my preferred means of mixing. I enjoy the taste of French vanilla, but because it has a low sweetener profile, the flavor has a bit more of a raw protein quality than some of the other isolate products on the market. It's not advertised as a weight loss product, but I did lose 1/2-in off my waist while using. If you are are looking for a versatile powder product, Whey Isolate+ is a powerhouse.
Review - Six Star Whey Isolate - Decadent Chocolate - Taste - Pretty good chocolate taste Mixability - I used water to mix, this mixed well and didn't leave a lot of clumps. I use a blender bottle with mixing ball. I would recommend this protein, especially with this having 60g of protein per serving, this is pretty good to me. I didn't especially love the flavor but it was good enough that I would buy it and use it again. Chocolate is a hard flavor to get right for me. I am a pretty picky person when it comes to flavors and textures. This gets a 8 out of 10 for me. Review - Six Star Whey Isolate - French Vanilla Taste: This when mixed with water was not very good to me. It was drinkable and if you chug it then its not that bad, I can't say that I would buy it. Mixability : I used ice cold water and a blender bottle shaker with wire whisk ball, after shaking for about 10-15 seconds it seemed as though all clumps were taken care of and blended pretty smoothly, after sipping on it noticed there was a certain grittiness to the mixture, I might have needed a little more water or something else. Overall: I would give this protein shake a 5 out of 10 because of flavor. It might be better mixed in a blender with some fresh fruit and maybe some almond milk. Not willing to write it off completely, but there are other vanilla protein shakes out there that are better.
This is great tasting stuff! If poor taste, chalky powder and bad results are a problem in your life, look no further!
I was privileged to be able to sample both of these products as well as the Peanut Butter Chocolate protein bars (You will have to go to the review forum to read my review of these). Let me start by saying that I approached these with a little of a negative bias. When I first started on BB back in 2007, Six Star was one of the two brands that were often criticized on the forums. While the worst problem I have ever had with any protein was a little bloating, the price per serving kept me from ever trying them. Let me say, "Shame on me." Both flavors were very light to me. They matched the flavor profile, but were not overly strong or overly sweet. That said, they were good and just based on flavor I would use them again. The profile is good with 30g of protein and low carb, I look for that. I give Six Star Kudos for being up front about the added BCAA (over and above the protein). In today's spiking world, I respect the honesty. Taste - you can see my rating above. Vanilla was a bit too light for my liking Mixability - 9/20 - shaker and oats, mixed well every time Effectiveness - 8/10 - Hard to tell in such a brief period. Would I buy or recommend this product? I would purchase this product and recommend it to others who are looking for a product in its price range CONS: I would love to see this in larger packaging options. I purchase protein for the month or longer at a time. At 18 servings and 2 shakes a day, this lasts just a little over a week.
I received a 1.5lb jug of French Vanilla and a 1.5 jug of Decadent Chocolate through a Six Star Promotion.Having gone through a lot of protein powders throughout the years, I have to say…this isn’t a bad choice. I prefer the flavor of the chocolate a little more over the vanilla. The vanilla isn’t bad, but I believe I’d enjoy it a little more if it was just plain vanilla rather than French vanilla. Both flavors were sweet, but neither flavor was too overbearing. And neither flavor has a heavy medicinal taste as some protein flavors do. I did not try the stir method, but as far as mixability goes, if you have a shaker cup you’ll be just fine. I used approx. 12 oz-14oz of water and a few hard shakes and I couldn’t complain. Again…I prefer higher protein content in my drinks and bars. This protein has 30g per scoop so it’s a solid amount of protein. I do like the fact that there are added BCAAs…The label specifies that the protein content does not include the BCAAs in the 30grams of protein. “100% of the 30g per serving of protein comes 100% from pure protein.” My only complaint would be that I’d like to see a better breakdown of the BCAAs rather than them just being listed out in the ingredients list. As far as calories and carbs go…There’s 150 calories per scoop and 3g of carbs per scoop. And for sugar…there’s only 2g per scoop. Overall, if you are in need of a protein that’s at a fair price point and has a good amount of protein, you won’t go wrong with Six Star.
