  • In a 2013 human clinical trial of Cluster Dextrin®, 24 adult male athletes showed that during cycling exercise, the group administered 15 grams of Cluster Dextrin performed better than those who took the same amount of a maltodextrin.*

Carbohydrate Recommendations for Strength and Endurance Athletes

Due to the unique energy demands of strength and endurance-based sports, athletes who participate in these activities have different carbohydrate requirements for fueling optimal performance. Aerobic endurance athletes and those who train for 60 minutes or more a day (think runners, cyclists, MMA fighters) should strive to consume 8–10 grams of carbohydrate per kilogram of body weight daily to replenish glycogen levels.* On the other hand, athletes who do not train aerobically for more than an hour each day (weight training, sprinting, football) should strive for 5–6 grams of carbohydrate per kilogram body weight daily.

When and how many carbohydrates should I consume before, during, and after exercise?

The following table outlines general recommendations for carbohydrate consumption before, during, and after exercise. However, athletes may need to experiment with different protocols (timing, types, and amounts) to produce individual optimal performance.

General Carbohydrate Intake
  • Eat 55–65% of total daily energy as carbohydrates with a variety of natural carbohydrate food sources, including fruits and vegetables and their juices, as well as whole grain products and low-fat dairy.
  • A general recommendation for athletes is 6–10 grams of carbohydrate per kilogram of body weight, depending on gender, type of sport, and training intensity and volume.
Carbohydrate 3–4 Hours Before Exercise
  • For an adult, 200–300 grams of carbohydrate 3–4 hours before endurance exercise maximizes glycogen stores at the onset of exercise and thus enhances performance. Body size, particularly glycogen storage potential, accounts for this broad range.
Carbohydrate 30–60 Minutes Before Exercise
  • Ingest 50–75 grams of carbohydrate 30–60 minutes before exercise. Two scoops of NutraBio SuperCarb would cover this amount.
Carbohydrate Immediately Before Exercise
  • If carbohydrate is to be consumed immediately before exercise <5 minutes), 50 grams (less for women) can enhance performance without overloading the stomach at the onset of exercise. Two scoops of NutraBio SuperCarb would cover this amount.
Carbohydrate During Exercise
  • An endurance athlete should strive to ingest 30–60 grams (1 to 2 scoops of SuperCarb) of carbohydrate per hour of endurance performance to maintain normal blood glucose levels. Strength-trained individuals may also benefit from this amount if exercise goes beyond 60 minutes and is high intensity.
Carbohydrate After Exercise
  • Ingest carbohydrate as soon as possible after completing a glycogen-depleting exercise session. SuperCarb makes an easy and convenient choice.
  • Ingest 1–1.5 grams of carbohydrate per kilogram of body weight during the first 30 minutes after endurance exercise and every 2 hours for at least 4–6 hours after that.
  • Ingesting carbohydrate late in an endurance bout may be beneficial if recovery time before subsequent exercise is limited <one day).

Carbohydrates Are Not Bad For You

Carbohydrates have been cast in a negative light the past few years with so-called experts stating they cause weight gain, excess body fat, adverse blood lipid profiles, and a host of other problems that can wreak havoc on your health—all of which are simply not true. However, what these experts fail to tell you is that carbohydrates are the preferred source of fuel during high-intensity, anaerobic exercise such as sprinting or weight lifting. Consuming adequate carbohydrates, which are broken down into glucose in the bloodstream or stored in muscle tissue as glycogen, ensures you have the stamina to power through workouts without hitting a wall. In fact, various professional fitness organizations recommend 50–60% of total daily calories should come from carbohydrates to produce optimal performance in athletes.

On the other hand, low carbohydrate consumption can cause the body to use protein as energy, which in turn affects the ability of muscles to repair and recover. Simply put, carbohydrates are king when it comes to exercise performance. It should be noted, though, that not all carbohydrates are created equal. Best Carb recovery drink in my opinion. I also like Glycofuse by Gaspari but this SuperCarb is one step better. I always choose unflavored for Versatilty. I can mix with my intra BCAA or my post workout protein isolate. With this product I’ve avoid post workout crash from the pre-work or just sheer exhaustion. Also helps with cravings because I’m loaded with carbs that actually address my glycogen levels. Very happy with this product and Nutrabio brand, I have recently switched to nutrabio products because of the better, cleaner, more transparent options.

For what it's suppose to do I'd say it works. The science is definitely there it's been proven. Absorbs pretty quickly and lasted throughout my workout. They use what they call "Cluster Dextrin" which is suppose to work better than the average maltodextrin. My pumps felt fuller and the next day my recovery felt improved. No stomach discomfort or issues while taking this. I love the fact that they show the research and their label is transparent. Mixed very well. Was satisfied with the results it gave me while taking it. I prefer to take this before a preworkout not mixed. Just my preference. Tasted amazing too. Worth checking out if you've yet to use a carb supplement. Just remember to keep up with real food too folks!

Thanks to Kon Rock got me the hookup on a 60 serving tub of this deliciousness. I will say I was pleasantly surprised not only from the 60 serving tub but the nice transparent label from Nutrabio. This has 25g of cyclic dextrin and lately I have been loving intra workout carbs as it keeps my endurance up and feeling nice and full pumped during my sessions. The taste with this is on point not too sweet/strong but just right in my opinion. I'm comparing this to gaspari glycofuse which is more comparable to me then say Sizeon as Sizeon has a bit more to it. The price point for this is right on especially for what you get. This will definitely be a staple for me in the future as I want to try the other flavors. Overall great price point, ingredient profile, and best of all actual results in the gym which is what matters!

I received a 60 serving tub of the unflavored version of this Cyclic Dextrin supplement and after adding 1 serving to my pre-workout and an additional serving to my intra-workout beverage which consisted of bcaa's for a little over 2 weeks know I figured it's time to give feedback on this supplement. This is suppose to be a performance and recovery supplement and I can honestly say after running this the way I mentioned it definitely works great in the way it was designed to work. The powder mixes flawlessly with no taste so it doesn't effect the flavor of anything you mix it with and it hit's your stomach so lightly with no stomach distress so it is ideal to sip on combined with your intra while you train. I train on an empty stomach so the carbs in this powder work differently from the stimulants in pre's where the energy you get from this powder is more of an endurance that helps keep you going through your workout and I noticed by also having it combined with my intra I was able to last longer to do more work in the gym and I noticed my overall recovery was definitely accelerated. I was coming back from an injury where I hadn't trained in about 8-10 weeks so I should have felt muscle soreness but honestly I felt none while utilizing this Cyclic Dextrin both pre and intra for each and every weight training workout I've had in a little more than two weeks. Overall I definitely recommend giving this Super Carb a try especially in the unflavored version because it blends well with any flavored supplement. I feel this is a supplement more for an advanced weight trainer who tends to have longer workouts in the gym and wants something that will give them more endurance and recovery without causing any stomach issues that other carb sources might create.

NutraBio sent over a 60 serving tub of Pineapple Super Carb, which is their high-branched cyclic dextrin product! The Super Carb formula from NutraBio is simple, straightforward but excellent: 25 grams highly-branched cyclic dextrin, 525 mg Calcium Potassium Phosphate Citrate, 157 mg sodium phosphate, and 140 mg Di-magnesium malate. The 25 grams of HBCD is a great dose for pre or intra workouts carb. It is also reasonable enough for double-scooping for extra long and grueling workouts. Price is reasonable at $1 per serving for the 60 serving tub. I have really learned the value of carb intake before and during exercise. It really is a way to stave off fatigue and optimize performance. Super Carb does a great job at it too. I workout harder and longer when using Super Carb. Plus, I have better muscle pumps with Super Carb. The two scoop serving has you feeling excellent especially paired with their pre-workout, NutraBio PRE. This is definitely a product I think any type of athlete should check out. The HBCD is a superior carb source compared to most other carb-based sports/lifting products. The Super Carb pineapple flavor is very good! It is a sweet, mild pineapple flavor that is almost entirely without any acidity - at least when used with 14 oz or more of water. As someone who hasn't used many carb supplements in the past, changing things up by using this pre and intra-workout really took my energy levels and stamina to new levels. On my bigger training days like legs and back, I didn't fatigue anywhere near as quickly as I normally would. Great sustained energy throughout my workouts as this product sat extremely well for me in my stomach. No discomfort or bloating and it didn't feel like the addition to my current pre & intra-workout supplements weighed me down at all.

I used two servings of the Super Carb: Pineapple and Raspberry Lemonade. The Pineapple tasted very good, and it was quite accurate. The Raspberry Lemonade tasted more like a Cotton Candy flavor to me. The first serving was taken during a workout for which I used a Pre, so I could not really tell if this helped increase my energy. The second serving was taken during a workout for which I took no Pre ... the energy replenishment was felt, it was there, but not the same as a Pre, obviously. As a personal note, I would prefer to use a Pre instead, and a more typical intra, such as the IntraBlast, and save some Calories and Carbs in the process, and also get some real energy/pumps. When using the Pre, the effects of the Super Carb were unnoticeable. The price is right: $1/serving is great. With free shipping over $49, you cannot go wrong. I enjoyed these two servings very much. Would like to buy this in the summer and try on some longer Cardio sessions, such as a longer bike ride of 20-30 miles. It is possible that this might help during extended Cardio workouts. I took this right after my last rep, I'm a huge user of carb post workout and SUPER CARB was perfect. Flavor was so good, not thick and mixed great after a few shakes. This also has a boost of Electrolyte Omtimizer to help move that lactic build up. I really enjoyed this product, also one thing I have noticed in regards to carbs is digest, and there was zero digestion issues. Nothing but filling the muscles back up and shuttling the nutrients back through the blood to grow. Get this product!!!

Directions For Super Carb:
