Get Healthy With Chiropractic! Find Out If You Need It.

I am going to discuss and share the many benefits that Chiropractic care can have on you. I am going to explain how Chiropractic and bodybuilding/fitness correlate to provide maximum results for efforts.

Most of the readers here at may just know me from my articles, contests, or even photo shoots. All those are just accessories to my main career which I am pursuing at the moment. I currently am attending Parker Chiropractic College in Dallas, Texas. It is a 4-year program but I am taking summer courses, so it will knock off about 6 months. Where I stand I have 1.5 years left to go until ultimately becoming a doctor of Chiropractic.

Chiropractic students study extensive clinical sciences such as pathology, diagnosis, X-ray, neurosciences, physiologies, anatomies, orthopedics and many more. In order to practice, the chiropractor must pass national and state licensing exams which may vary from state to state. The educational difference between doctor of chiropractic and a medical doctor are very few. Medical doctors receive education in pharmacology that chiropractors do not, since chiropractic is a drugless healing profession. Chiropractors receive more education in human anatomy and focus on the neuromusculoskeletal components of the body.

I am going to discuss and share the many benefits that Chiropractic care can have on you. Just some additional information that may take your understanding higher than what most people think Chiropractors "Crack Backs!". That is just the tip of the ice burg when it comes to the many benefits you can receive from Chiropractic care. Due to the nature of, health and fitness, I am going to explain how Chiropractic and bodybuilding/fitness correlate to provide maximum results for efforts.

What Is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism. These important functions are controlled by the brain, spinal cord, and all the nerves of the body. The skull protects the delicate tissues of the brain. The moving bones of the spine protect the vulnerable communication pathways of the spinal cord and nerve roots. If the nervous system is impaired, it can cause malfunction of the tissues and organs throughout the body.

Doctors of Chiropractic call this a vertebral subluxation complex. Your doctor of chiropractic focuses on increasing the integrity of your nervous system by correcting subluxations (spinal misalignments), which improves nervous system function. This helps the body's natural ability to heal itself and function correctly.

The Chiropractic adjustment has been proven to increase motion, increase circulation, reduce swelling and pain, and remove nervous irritation. Once this nervous irritation is removed, your body is able to do what it is designed to do. Due to this affect, Chiropractic takes on a more Holistic approach, without the use of many certain drugs and therapies. I will go into more detail of what a Chiropractic adjustment and subluxations are next in the article.

The ABCs Of Subluxations.

Vertebral subluxations are displacements of the spinal bones (vertebrae) that can cause stress to your spinal cord and nervous system. Subluxations may be caused by poor sleeping habits, poor posture, strenuous exercise, injuries, auto accidents, sports, slips or falls, and in some cases, the birthing process itself. A subluxation is a minor misalignment of the segments of the spine causing nerve interference and related loss of function.

A Subluxation can interfere with proper nerve flow, inhibiting the body's ability to adjust to stress. Subluxation of the spinal column causes nerve pressure which can lead to numbness, weakness or the under- performance of organs and tissues. Spinal misalignments can cause nerve tissue to stretch, chafe, and become irritated which can lead to organ dysfunction and pain. This can distort nerve messages between your body and your brain. The result? Illness, disease, infirmity, and not being able to properly function as efficient as you were designed. This in turn will affect performance, recovery, and proper structure and function of the body.

What Is An Adjustment?

Chiropractic's specialize in finding and correcting neurological interference, Subluxations, through treatments referred to as spinal "adjustments". A chiropractic adjustment is the art of using a specific force in a precise direction, applied to a joint that is fixated, 'locked up,' or not moving properly. An adjustment adds motion to the joint, helping the bones gradually return to a more normal position and motion. The purpose of this safe and natural procedure is improved spinal function, improved nervous system function, and improved health.

Is The Adjustment Safe?

There are literally thousands of published scientific studies proving chiropractic's safety and effectiveness. In the words of the New Zealand government's inquiry, chiropractic care is 'remarkably safe.' Chiropractic has an excellent safety record. It is the result of a conservative approach to health that avoids invasive procedures or addictive drugs. In fact, this is one reason why the malpractice insurance for a Chiropractor is several times lower than a medical doctor. Chiropractic care is a natural approach to better health that is proven safe and effective.

Can I Adjust Myself?

Since a chiropractic adjustment is a specific force, applied in a specific direction, to a specific joint, it is impossible to adjust oneself; and also dangerous. Spinal adjusting may look easy when done by an experienced chiropractor, but it has taken several years to master. Turning and twisting your back and neck may create a 'popping' sound, however this usually causes an unstable area of the spine even more unsteady. Remember the goal of the adjustment is to get joints moving that are not moving normally, twisting your back will cause unstable joints to become more unstable. Spinal adjusting is not for amateurs!

The best way to enjoy the healthful benefits of chiropractic is to receive adjustments from a Doctor of Chiropractic. Even your doctor must seek out the services of another colleague to help restore and maintain proper spinal function.

When it comes to bodybuilding, fitness, and health, many questions may cross your mind during your years of dedication. Some times injuries can be avoided if proper maintenance care is executed. I will now discuss some issues that may impede, stop or even hinder your efforts in the gym and leading a healthy lifestyle. Also at the same time I will clear up some myths that you may have thought or heard from others'.

Do I Have a Pinched Nerve?

Many patients consult a doctor of chiropractic because they think they have a pinched nerve. While commonly associated with the spine, a pinched nerve is actually rare. Research suggests that only 10%-15% of spine related problems are caused by direct pressure of bone on a nerve. Typically a 'pinched nerve' will result in numbness, burning, or a 'pins and needles' feeling. When a bone pushes on a nerve, this is a serious condition that requires immediate attention. Several other possibilities exist that and also cause numbness and/or a burning sensation. Nerves are more commonly stretched or irritated, which will produce a numbness feeling.

Do I Have A Slipped Disc?

No, it is not possible for discs to slip. Discs do not 'slip,' however, if damaged they can leak or rupture. The disc is a pad-like tissue located between two vertebrae which act as shock absorbers for the spine. The center of the disc is made of a fluid, soft, 'jelly-like' substance. When discs become damaged, tears can occur through which the soft center can leak out and push on the nerves. This is known as a ruptured or herniated disc and is extremely painful. While results cannot be guaranteed, many patients have avoided needless surgery or a dependency on pain pills, by choosing chiropractic care for their disc-related health problems.

In fact chiropractic adjustments are safer than back surgery, muscle relaxers, and even aspirin! Digestive Disturbance Digestive problems are known to be related to tension and stress. A nervous stomach is caused by an irritated nervous system. Irritated nerves connected with the colon can result in digestive malfunction. One of the top ten manifestations as a result of a car accident can be digestive trouble due to damage to the spine and nervous system. As you may know, nutrition and most of all, ABSORPTION, of what you eat play a crucial role in the recovery and building of new muscle tissue, and overall health.

Difficulty Sleeping

People who do not sleep well are tense and cannot easily relax. The cause of build-up tension From training, stress, dieting, and work in the body is irritating to the nervous system. Chiropractic relieves the tension in the spine, reducing the pressure on the nervous system and allows you to be less tense, more relaxed, and therefore you would sleep better.

Irritability/Mood Swings

A person who is irritable or moody can be this way due to tension that has built up in the muscles and spine, irritating the nervous system. Chiropractic gets rids of built-up tension in your body, allowing you to be more at ease with yourself and others.

Your immune system protects your body from foreign substances called antigens, by producing antibodies and chemicals to fight them. Usually the immune system ignores natural substances and fights the dangerous ones like bacteria. Allergic reactions occur when your immune system reacts abnormally to a substance that is not necessarily harmful. In the case of hay fever, the immune system overreacts to the pollen, dust, and mold in the air and produces too much histamine. It is the histamine that inflames and irritates the sinuses and eyes.

In some cases, the histamines can irritate the lining of the bronchial tubes resulting in asthma. Symptoms associated with pollen related allergies are persistent sneezing, running nose, itchy, tearing eyes, and itching in the nose, roof of the mouth, and throat. The medical approach to combat allergies includes antihistamines, decongestants, and steroids prescribed as a nasal spray. Many of these can be purchased "over-the-counter", but may cause some undesirable side effects such as drowsiness or nervousness.

The reason a person becomes overly sensitive to things in their environment is that their nervous system has become hypersensitive from stress. This can be brought about through falls, poor posture, accidents, lack of exercise, tension, or stress. If you were examined and found irritation to the nerves that go to your sinus and we were able to correct that, you would function normally and be healthy.

Why Me? If So, How Long Will I Need Chiropractic Care?

Spinal problems neglected since early childhood, may require ongoing supportive care for optimum spinal function. These long-standing problems are often associated with muscle weakness, soft tissue damage, and degenerative changes to the spine and the whole body as a functioning unit.

Most patients find that periodic chiropractic check-ups help keep them in tip-top shape. Those who are active, have stressful jobs, training hard, dieting hard or who just want to be their very best, find that a schedule of preventive visits is helpful in the maintenance of good health. Some patients seek chiropractic care only when their ache or pain becomes unbearable. Unfortunately this style of 'crisis management' is usually more costly and time-consuming in the long run. How long you decide to benefit from chiropractic care is always up to you. Periodic chiropractic check-ups, like brushing and flossing your teeth, getting regular exercise, and eating wholesome foods is part of a healthy lifestyle.

I hope this article was able to educate you and she some light on the extreme helpful benefits Chiropractic can not only have on your training and fitness routine, but most of all and impact on your overall health and functioning in every day life. Thanks for reading!
