Whitney Reid - The Man Who Lets His Abs Do The Talking
This month saw the cinematic release of yet another summer sequel, which was probably the most successful TV to silver screen transition of all time. The Sex And The City girls donned the Prada handbags and Manolo Blahnik shoes and made the trip of a lifetime to the Middle East. During the movie the girls are doing their usual club scene when a rough and ready rugby jock strips off his t-shirt and flashes some seriously shredded abs. When I saw it I said to myself, "Hey, I know that guy?!" The movie wasn't in the cinema for three days and the emails started to flock in, with questions about how they could have abs like the guy from the movie. So what better way to find out than to catch up and ask the man himself, Whitney Reid?
[ Brian Bullman ] How did you manage to land a role in one of the summer's biggest blockbusters?
[ Whitney Reid ] Basically I got a casting call for Sex and the City 2 last July in New York. My commercial agent, Silver Model Management, submitted me for the part. They were looking for a tall, attractive, athletic build with nice abs, and also willing to take their shirt off on screen. When you go in for a small scene mainly focusing on the body the casting is short and to the point. I walked in the casting office, took my shirt off, smiled, and we snapped some photos.

[ BB ] That was it?
[ WR ] That's it! It's tough when you go into a casting that is so general, you don't get to show your personality at all. And there are tons of guys with great abs and big smiles...so it was kind of luck of the draw on this one.
[ BB ] So did you know there and then that you had the part?
[ WR ] I received a call from agent Mike Lyons from Silver Models the weekend of the Olympia while I was in Vegas; he let me know that I had just booked the role! It was very exciting for me and perfect timing since I had shot a cover for Men's Exercise the week before and I was still in great shape from the shoot. It's hard to keep your abs detailed all year and I don't like to show them unless they are.
[ BB ] Was this your first movie?
[ WR ] It was the first big screen production I had ever worked on. I had been on plenty of commercial sets, such as Trojan Condoms; I am the Trojan Man, (laughs) but never a movie set.

[ BB ] So when did you actually start working on the movie?
[ WR ] We started shooting the first week of October, and had a blast. I met some amazing people on set that I still stay in touch with, such as my boy Richie Nuzzolese who has recently started a band and moved LA last week. Everyone go check him out!
[ BB ] So tell me a little about the scene you were in.
[ WR ] The scene is based in a bar in Abu Dhabi; I'm a rugby player in town for the World Games and sitting at the front of the stage in the bar along with fellow rowdy rugby players. We are sitting around taking shots, yelling at others in the bar, flirting with girls, having a good time. You, being Irish must know what it's like. The four main girls, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, and Kim Cattrall, get onstage to sing karaoke, "I Am Woman." During the second verse of the song, I stand up, pulling up my shirt doing my version of belly dancing! I'm a total dork, it's great.
[ BB ] How was it working with all those Hollywood celebrities?
[ WR ] Everyone on set was so fun, the girls laughed at our table the entire time we were filming. We were there to make the scene fun. Director, Michael Patrick King, loved how the scene came together.
[ BB ] I'm sure the fans here on Bodybuilding.com will love to see you in the movie, but more importantly they will be even more impressed with your six pack than your acting skills, so tell me a little about how you got your abs in such great shape.
[ WR ] As far as my abdominal routine goes, I do abs daily and turn up the intensity 3 weeks out before a shoot. My favorite exercise is Decline Bench Full Range Sit-ups with a 25lbs plate behind my head; Mike O'Hearn taught me the exercise. That beast does it with a 45lbs plate, it's a killer! I do 3 sets of 10 reps. Next, Leg Raises off of the decline board 5 sets of 20 reps superset with Nautilus Abdominal Crunch Machine 5 sets of 20 reps.
Then I do Rope Crunches 5 sets of 25 reps superset with Oblique Twist with a weighted bar. This is my daily routine, sometimes I will add some regular Crunches off the floor to get in extra work but I prefer to do weighted lifts for my abs. But remember, abdominal training is only a very small part of getting your abs to show. I believe that diet is number one, cardio number two, and then training abs. You can see my entire diet on my BodySpace Page and along with my Videos.
[ BB ] That's awesome bro, thanks for taking the time out to talk to us. At least now I have a legitimate excuse for watching a chick flick.
