Although BSN has been in existence since 2001, they really exploded onto the scene when their top product NO-Xplode introduced the world to a new type of pre-workout supplementation. They have not looked back since and now BSN is one of the most recognized companies in the world today.
Obviously their products speak for themselves and so do BSN's loyal customer base. For those reasons and more BSN is the Bodybuilding.com Supplement Company of the Month.
[ Q ] Please tell our readers how BSN started?
BSN was founded in 2001 by Chris Ferguson and Scott James. The pair began selling their supplements out of the trunk of a car, going door-to-door and telling anyone who would listen about the new brand and the new ideas behind their products.
People began to listen, customers took notice of the products, and BSN grew and grew into the internationally-recognized, industry-leading brand it is today.
[ Q ] What made Chris and Scott decide to start a supplement company of their own?
Frankly, Chris and Scott were underwhelmed by the available supplements on the market at the time.
As avid gym enthusiasts, the pair was aware of the importance of nutritional supplementation for maximizing results in the gym or on the field of competition, yet they both felt the available options just weren't cutting it. So they decided to see if they could do it better.
[ Q ] What are some of BSN's top products right now?
BSN's meteoric rise can be directly tied to the popularity and effectiveness of some of the company's time-tested core products such as THERMONEX, NITRIX and CELLMASS, and our flagship product is of course the one and only NO-Xplode.
NO-XPLODE really introduced a mass audience to the concept of pre-training ignition, which is obviously a major component of the supplement industry today.
More recently BSN has developed one of the most popular protein brands in the world in the SYNTHA-6 line of products. Originally only available in powdered form, today BSN boasts two different Ready-to-Drink Versions as well as a SYNTHA-6 meal replacement bar called SYNTHA-6 DECADENCE which will be released in the first quarter of 2011.
Another recent innovation is the EVOLUTION SERIES product line, featured revamped versions of BSN's classic MASS STACK products NO-XPLODE, CELLMASS and NITRIX aimed at serious athletes looking to take their supplementation to the next level.
[ Q ] Are there any new and exciting products that BSN is coming out with soon?
Well as mentioned above, the SYNTHA-6 DECADENCE meal replacement bar is coming very soon, and we're pretty excited about that. We debuted it at the 2010 Olympia Expo and the fan response was overwhelmingly positive.
It tastes like no other high-protein bar out there, and we think people are going to love it when it hits the shelves.
Something else we're pretty excited about is the upcoming redesign of our EVOLUTION SERIES. We've reworked some of the formulas to make them better than ever, and we've got some great new concepts for the look of the products that we think will really resonate with consumers.
[ Q ] Is there any other big news about BSN on the horizon?
Just know that BSN will never rest on its laurels. We've got a couple new things up our sleeve for 2011, but we're playing that pretty close to the vest for the time being.
[ Q ] Has BSN sponsored any people and if so how have they impacted the company and the industry?
We've sponsored a number of elite athletes from a wide array of disciplines over the years, though you'd have to say it all starts with the great Ronnie Coleman. Of course everyone's well aware of how Ronnie changed the face of professional bodybuilding, and when he came to us to say what a big fan he was of our products, it just made so much sense for us to work together.

He really was the foundation of Team BSN as we know it today, and his unparalleled success onstage and never-ending quest for excellence mirrors a lot of what BSN as a company is all about. His honest endorsement of our products has played a huge part in the growth and visibility of the company, and really opened the doors for other elite athletes to join our Team.
Current IFBB superstar Dennis Wolf is one really great example, and he's joined by the likes of UFC stars Cain Velasquez and Forrest Griffin as well as young pro basketball stud Joakim Noah.

Fitness Celebrity Jennifer Nicole Lee and recent Bodybuilding.com IFBB Bikini Athlete of the Year Amanda Latona are two of our most highly-visible female athletes, and they've really helped new sectors of the market embrace BSN and the importance of nutritional supplementation as a whole. [ Q ] Let's say a consumer is interested in the BSN product line, they are just starting out and can only afford one product. Which one would BSN recommend and why?
There's probably no better place to start than NO-Xplode. If you want to see results, you have to put the work in. That means giving it everything you've got at all times in the gym, on the court, in the ring or wherever. And that can be hard to do consistently, especially if you're just starting out.
NO-XPLODE is the standard when it comes to pre-workout ignition; it's time-tested, and people trust it to do what it says it will. We're extremely proud of that customer trust and loyalty, and we feel it's well-earned. Just try it 30 minutes before your workout, and you'll see what all the fuss is about.
[ Q ] What does BSN believe to be the best and worst things about the supplement industry?
The supplement industry is wonderful when competition drives creativity and the customers reap the benefits of our innovation. The surrounding culture has done great things for advancing awareness of health and fitness, making regular exercise a priority in millions of people's lives, and teaching people that hard work and discipline are rewarded with positive results, both mental and physical.
And as the industry continues to grow and technology continues to evolve, athletes benefit from useful products that will only get better and more effective.

Of course, the danger is that there are always a few bad actors who make shoddy products or engage in deceptive advertising, for example, and thus cast a negative light on the industry as a whole. Consumers need to be educated so they can make informed choices about what they buy and what they put in their bodies, and the good guys like BSN need to lead the way in this regard.
Here at BSN we take our role as one of the industry leaders very seriously. Our primary responsibility is to the consumer, and we will continue to work hard to ensure we never betray that trust.
