The Interview What's your background? How did you get started in the fitness industry?

Angela Mraz: My background is simple, I just wanted to get into shape. The first day that I went to the gym I was hooked and never looked back. What do you feel is your biggest fitness-related accomplishment?

AM: I found out about NPC Figure competitions I wanted to compete in one. So I borrowed a friends two and one piece competition suit, worked out for 2 months and jumped up on the stage. I was amazed and extremely excited when I was given the 1st Place Trophy. Is fitness modeling/competition your full-time job? If not, what else do you do?

AM: I am a full time personal trainer. On the side I work for Maximum Human Performance (MHP) supplements, compete, attend trade shows, and model. What are your immediate and long-term goals?

AM: My immediate goals are to continue in getting as much publicity as possible and being as active and a part of the fitness and health scene as I can be. For the long range, I want to establish myself a notable personal trainer. Please describe a typical day for you. What is your daily routine like?

AM: I normally get up at 5AM and go to the gym. Weight lifting and cardio. From there it's back home to train clients. Depending on my schedule, I may go to a photo shoot or attend a trade show. In between clients, trade shows and photo shoots, try to find time to answer and send e-mails and make telephone calls. I also try to save between 6 and 8PM to spend with my son. Oh, and I also take my son to school and pick him up. Please describe your normal diet. How do you eat to stay in shape?

AM: I don't need to be a real fanatic about calories - that doesn't mean that I eat bad food. My five to six meals per day normally consist of egg whites, whole wheat bread, protein shakes, tuna, some red meats, lots of lettuce, potatoes and of course chicken. Do I cheat, of course I do... Kellogg cornflakes sometimes before bed! What is your training routine like?

AM: I train legs two days per week, normally Mondays and Friday - focusing on hams, glutes and calves on Monday and quads, glutes and calves on Friday. Tuesday is chest, shoulders and tri's, Wednesday is back and biceps day, and Thursday is cardio and ab day. Throughout the week, since I have a gym at home, I will hit calves and abs and ride the bike.

The key is to train hard! There can't be any wasted time in the gym. My daily routines are set up so that they last no longer than 1 hour. I normally train heavy for 3 weeks and moderate to light for 2 weeks. 1 month out from a competition I switch over to light weight with massive amounts of reps. What supplements do you use?

AM: I use M.H.P. supplements - protein and creatine, also a multi-vitamin. How do you motivate yourself to get/stay in shape?

AM: Most of the time, my husband/motivator will go with me to the gym. He's a real fanatic about seeing how far he can push me. What are a few of your favorite fitness and health-related web sites?

AM: Of course my own website at Also and the NPC website. I visit Brenda's website often and What tips would you give to someone who wanted to get into the fitness modeling (or fitness competition) industry?

AM: The competition is fierce. The figure division is growing by leaps and bounds. At my last competition there were 135 beautiful woman who all had gorgeous bodies. Symmetry is key, presentation, proper posing, smiling, self confidence and a competition suit that enhances your appearance. If someone you knew asked you how to lose weight and get into shape quickly, what would you tell them?

AM: Eat 5-6 small "healthy" proportioned meals per day. Cardio 3 or more days a week. Full body work outs M - W - F (light weight - 10-15 rep range). Drink plenty of water. What do you feel differentiates you from other people in your field?

AM: All the fitness athletes I've met are wonderful people. They love to share insight and are always willing to help. It great to be part of the industry. Is there anything else you'd like to say?
