Kris Gethin: Man of Iron
Over the last decade, you've watched as Kris Gethin built muscle, burned fat, and transformed his body along with yours. Now he's embracing a challenge like nothing you've ever seen. While continuing to train like a bodybuilder, he will also prepare himself for a full-distance triathlon: a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bicycle ride, and a full marathon of 26.22 miles. His goals: put his mind and body through hell, defy the odds, and become a hybrid athlete.
Normally, athletes devote two full years to preparing for this type of event. Kris will do it in six months. And he'll share every step of the way in an innovative weekly video series.
Kris Gethin: Man Of Iron Program Overview
Meet Your Trainer
Kris Gethin is a world-renowned fitness icon. His motivational, no-bullshit personality has inspired countless individuals to reinvest in their health and get started on a path toward fitness. In his tenure as a Bodybuilding.com athlete, he's written hundreds of fitness articles and has starred in multiple video trainers. He is the master of transformation, and it always starts with himself. Also check out Kris' podcast episode, television interviews, and other publicity!
Man of Iron contains two co-existing programs. One is a bodybuilding program with a conditioning component. The full program contains both bodybuilding and triathlon training. Take your pick of training styles from the downloadable PDFs, or simply watch the weekly videos as Kris pushes every limit he has.
Kris doesn't start any challenge without information on his side. In this prologue to the training videos, Kris's coach, the acclaimed hybrid athlete Alex Viada, runs Kris through a barrage of physical tests and introduces him to the style of training that will dominate his life for the next six months.
The unique nature of the Man of Iron training program requires an equally unique nutrition plan. Kris Gethin's approach blends traditional and individualized diet principles to grow bigger, faster, and more athletic!
Week 1: Pedal to the Pavement
Kris' first week of training involves numerous gut-checks. Biking and running after a hard leg workout is only for the brave, but Kris is ready for the pain.
Week 2: Swimming Upstream
Kris Gethin, running down a trail in the middle of a rainstorm? Yup. Welcome to a new world of fitness in this week's episode of Man of Iron.
Week 3: Intense Extremes
In Kris' most intense week yet, he swings back and forth between inspiration and frustration. Does he let either extreme cause him to waver from the path? Not a chance.
Week 4: Time to Chill
Whether at home or on the road, Kris goes to whatever lengths necessary to crush his nutrition, training, and recovery. Ice bath from a hotel ice machine, anyone? Jump in!
Week 5: Beat-Up & Bruised
The first four weeks of Man of Iron have left Kris battered and broken. This week, he gets a well-earned dip in intensity. But, can he actually allow himself to hold back?
Week 6: One Leg At A Time
After last week's deload, the volume and intensity in Kris' training go back up. Not coincidentally, both muscle soreness and his old injuries rear their ugly heads.
Week 7: Staying Afloat
After six weeks of practicing every swimming drill in the book, Kris and Sunshine enter an open water swim competition for the first time. Will they power to the beach or struggle to keep their heads above water?
Week 8: Going by Instinct
Think your hectic schedule doesn't allow for quality training? Kris Gethin politely disagrees. During a week packed with work and international jet-setting, he still finds time for both the weights and lung-melting endurance work.
Week 9: Climbing Higher
While in Europe, Kris ventures out of the gym for a high-altitude adventure, then ventures into the hotel gym for minimalist workouts. This is how hybrid athletes make the most of every day!
Week 10: Taking a Lap
Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor a very long plane ride can keep Kris from completing his daily workout.
Week 11: Ups And Downs
Sometimes the sheer training workload is even hard for Kris Gethin, the master of high-volume training, to wrap his brain around.
Week 12: Back To The Grind
Their spontaneous half-marathon completed, Kris Gethin and Sunshine head back to the gym and to a local pond to continue adding muscle, burning fat, and mastering the complexities of open-water swimming.
Week 13: Hitting His Stride
A baker's dozen worth of weeks into this project, and Kris is hitting his stride. His workouts are as intense and punishing as ever, he's more confident in open water than ever before, and even his "bad days" biking or running are productive.
Week 14: Half Over The Horizon
The countdown to the half Ironman begins in earnest this week, as Kris deloads in the gym and focuses on form and race-specific skills outside of it. This is getting real.
Week 15: The Half is Here!
Is Kris Gethin's training setting him up to conquer a half-Ironman, or is he in for the battle of his life? This week, he'll find out.
Week 16: Half Ironman Accomplished
He came, he saw, he conquered. Four months after beginning his training, Kris has completed a Half Ironman, and gained some wisdom in the process. Listen to him and learn from him.
Week 17: Volume Down, Volume Up
With the half-Ironman out of the way, Kris' crosshairs are set firmly on the full Ironman, and his training is shifting dramatically. Is he up to the challenge?
Week 18: On The Road (And Trail)
Think Kris does nothing but lift, train, and eat? Think again! This week, he's on the road for business, training with famous friends, and wrapping up with an epic endurance weekend!
Week 19: Up The Mountain
In this adventurous episode, Kris battles both illness and unbelievable physical challenges. The hardest day hike in the U.S.? Yeah, he runs it.
Week 20: The Three-Day Leg Day
Kris pushes the limits of his lower body this week, but gets rewarded with some stellar views, as well as a run with one of his icons, none other than Dorian Yates.
Week 21: Back In The Saddle
It's another busy week, but Kris' equipment is more cooperative and his training is more efficient. The countdown to race day is on!
Week 22: Muscle And Meditation
Kris dives in with some experienced triathletes for his most difficult ride to date—after training legs, of course. He then creates his own personal meditation retreat in the mountains.
Week 23: The Taper Begins
With just one more week to go, Kris tapers down in volume, but definitely not intensity. From deadlifting five plates with Alex Viada to doing a booty workout with an IFBB bikini pro to running with Mike Rashid, his taper is unlike any other!
Week 24: The Final Countdown
Kris starts the week by measuring his essential health and performance markers, and ends it watching wildlife from his back door in Coeur d'Alene on the eve of the big race. Is he ready? He'll find out soon.
Week 25: Coming October 23 @ Noon (MDT)
Join us for the final race day episode on October 23rd!
