[ Q ] How did the gym start and why did you decide to begin (or work within) the gym business?
I have always been a very physically active person. Growing up I did Gymnastics. I have been exercising (weight training, cardio, stretching & yoga) since I got out of High school. I have always enjoyed the benefits of what having a regular exercise routine can do for your body & mind.
In the 90's I competed in several NPC and Fitness America pageants, which got me started with personal training. It was in 94' that I was exposed to pole dancing. I instantly fell in love with it. Pole dancing is such a unique form of exercise. It is a great resistance training workout, but you still get to have fun and express yourself.
Being a personal trainer for so many years, I knew this was a workout most women could benefit from. In addition, pole dancing improves your balance, coordination, flexibility and confidence.
[ Q ] Can you give us a description on what went into opening your awesome establishment?
What didn't go into it?
Haha. When I opened my first studio in NYC, I just opened it because I wanted to teach pole dancing. So, impulsively, I started looking for real estate. I found a place and got it all fixed up. And then realized I should have done some advertising before opening.
Needless to say, the first month or so was pretty dead. But things soon began to pick up and 5 years later, I have 3 studios in this struggling economy. I have had to be clever in my marketing, advertising and structuring my business to make it student AND employee friendly. Thinking outside the box is key! I fancy myself someone that has been able to do that with my businesses.
[ Q ] What makes your gym different?
My studio/gym is different from other pole dancing studios because of our ability to structure and teach multi level classes. We pride ourselves in structuring classes that are progress level of training to keep it safe. Still being able to challenge each student in the classroom, according to their fitness levels.
[ Q ] What sort of people do you attract into your gym?
People are always asking what our demographics are, literally women of all shapes and sizes between the ages of 18 to 50's. A lot of these women don't have any dance back ground and often no fitness backgrounds. This is the exercise for all women! And sometimes even men! Students range from waitresses, students, doctors, nurses, teachers, police officers, Broadway dancers, etc. Women from all walks of life.
[ Q ] What inspires people to train at your facility?
The ability to reach their fitness goals while still having fun in a safe, supportive environment. Our instructors are highly qualified certified Pole Dance/fitness instructors and are very passionate about helping other women learn this fabulous art form of resistance training.
[ Q ] Do you have any top trainers and why are they so good?
All of our Instructors are great in their own way. That is what makes this NYPD ship sail so smoothly. Team work! I would have to say, if there is a rock star in the bunch, it would have to be Gabrielle Valliere, Anna Grundstrom & Brynlyn Loomis. They have all been teaching for 4 years for me, and I get nothing but positive feedback from these women. Most of the 'testimonials' you see on our site are about these three instructors.
My sister Tracy, after competing in fitness for years, received her pro card with the IFBB in 2006. Her whole life is about heath and fitness. After training her to teach pole dancing, I can't think of a better person to be running our Kalamazoo, MI location. Tracy also does much of the customer service and booking. She is my rock and a talented pole dancer/instructor.

[ Q ] Who are your most notable present and past members?

Usually the most advanced in class, she always takes time to encourage the less experienced students. She is joy to have in class and a great pole dancer.
