Fitness Amateur Of The Week: Jean Loveridge

Jean got her start spotting a figure competitor, but now she's on the way to becoming one herself!

Name: Jean Loveridge
BodySpace: squataholic
Age: 28  Height: 5'5"  Weight: 130lbs
Location: Santa Barbara, CA
Years Competing: 3

How Did You Get Started?

I have always been athletic and loved staying active, but in 2006 I met a local figure competitor at my gym and was asked to be her training partner during her show prep. She showed me ropes and I was hooked! I never looked back and loved lifting ever since!

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

It depends on what I am trying to accomplish, but as of right now I am working on my conditioning so most of my workouts are plyometric based, lots of high repetition sets and cardio.

I work out 6 days per week, twice per day. I wake up early to get my cardio finished and go back to the gym in the late afternoon to lift. Altogether, I am spending about 3 hours in the gym daily. I take Sunday off completely.

Here is an example of my current training schedule:

6 days/week even on leg days, 30 minutes after my training sessions or at night after my last meal. I keep my heart rate around 135-140 bpm. When training for a competition I will add 1 hour of cardio to my schedule. This will be done in the morning before breakfast.

Day 1: Legs

Day 2: Chest/Triceps

Day 3: Back/Traps

Day 4: Cardio Only
Day 5: Legs

Day 6: Shoulders/Biceps

Day 7: Off

Hey Jean, we'll be your workout partner any time!

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

During the off season my diet varies but when I am getting ready for a competition I schedule in 5-6 meals daily. Most of my meals are whole foods, but when I am not training for any competitions I do supplement in an extra 1-2 protein shakes per day. Here is an example of my diet:

Meal 1: 7:00 a.m.
Post Workout
Meal 2: 11:00 a.m.
Meal 3: 2:00 p.m.
Meal 4: 5:30 p.m.
Meal 5: 8:30 p.m.
Meal 6: Before Bed (Off-Season Only)
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

I love all the supplements that I use. I take a multivitamin, fish oil, green tea, glucosamine, vitamins B, C, E and a lot more wellness products to ensure my body is getting what it needs to stay functioning and healthy.

As far as sport supplements I have been using a lot of BPI Sports products. I take 1MR pre-workout every day. I use this product prior to weight lifting because it helps me get energized but also helps me stay focused.

I have had nothing but great lifting sessions ever since I first used it. I especially enjoy the fact that I do not "crash" after my workouts and I do not feel burned out or tired immediately after.

I also have been using RoxyLean. I take 1 cap prior to my cardio sessions. I always feel strong, focused and ready to take on the calorie burning when I'm taking this product.

For protein I use Super Pro. It is a complete meal replacement for me. I use 1 scoop post workout and before bed in the off season. It has the right nutritional guidelines for me and tastes great.

My regimen looks like this:

Morning: Pre-Cardio
Post Workout & Before Bed: Off-Season Only
Why Do You Love Fitness/Bodybuilding?

I love and admire the discipline and dedication a bodybuilder has.

What Motivates You To Follow A Healthy Lifestyle?

A lot of my fitness and healthy life style choices where taught to me by my mom. She has always enjoyed being fit and health conscious herself and has always encouraged me to do the same. She has been supportive of all my goals along the way, from playing tennis in high school to my first time competing in figure. Also, my fellow competitors in the sports. Seeing others achieve their goals is inspiring to me. I have a close group of friends who are serious competitors. Their drive, dedication and commitment to their goals makes me want to push my limits farther.

What Made You Want To Achieve Your Goals?

Achieving your goals is the ultimate reward in life. Who would not want to conquer the quest they set out for? Just knowing and having the hope that "I will" achieve the goals I set for myself keeps me going …

What Are Your Future Fitness/Bodybuilding Plans?

An ongoing goal of mine is to be able to polish up my physique and take the stage as a bikini competitor. I have to say that transferring from the figure division to bikini has not been easy. I am not use to my new cardio schedule and regimen. The new program basically is like starting from scratch. I am building a completely different physique and it has been a long year of trying to adjust my mindframe. I think that as a fitness competitor there is always work to be done and things to improve upon, no matter how many years you have been at it.

Now, I am especially focused on conditioning my body. It's been a long process though all the cardio, plyometrics and high reps, but nonetheless rewarding. I hope to tackle 2012 with my best foot forward and just hope for the strength to keep doing what I love, stay fit, enjoy life and hopefully motivate a few people along the way with my journey!

What One Tip Would You Give Other Fitness Competitors?

To stay consistent and never give up on your goals. I have always had a problem with staying consistent with my program, unlike a lot of competitors that love to stay in a routine; I have found that I do not enjoy sticking to one set of things to eat, and one way of training.

I have to really get in the zone and set my goals in stone in order to be successful. Competing in the fitness world has taught me to never settle on mediocrity. Make sure that you hold yourself accountable, respect your goals! Never settle! To sum it all up - be persistent. Work hard. Don't give up. Get started early. And put forward that effort!

Who Are Your Favorite Fitness Competitors/Bodybuilders?

I really love Heather Dees and Erin Stern. They both seem to have a great attitude towards the sport and of course, amazing physiques.

What Features Do You Use On

I definitely love BodySpace. It is motivating to look at everyone's progress, trials and tribulations. Reading other people's success stories and what they might have overcame is always a "pick me up." It ensures you that you are not alone out there and there is a whole community that you can look to for support.

I also enjoy reading reviews on different supplements and workouts. These reviews allow me to make great choices if I chose to switch things up in my program.

Thank You

I would like to thank my trainer/coach Dusty Hanshaw and his wife Evian for all the time they have dedicated toward helping me reach my goals, I am always full of questions and I appreciate the fact that they always take the time to make sure all of them are answered. I have learned so much from the time we have worked together.

I would also like to thank everyone at BPI Sports for supplying me with some great products to use - love my RoxyLean!
