A Talk With Bodybuilder/Male Model, Anthony Catanzaro.

Is bodybuilding and modeling compatible? Absolutely! See how Anthony has become a successful bodybuilder and model in this great interview.

At eight, Anthony Catanzaro dreamed of success. Ten years later, he began a career, which would put him on the road to greatness, and all the success he could manage. Indeed, at eighteen, Anthony, with requisite good looks and charisma became a model and has since been in high demand in this extremely competitive industry.

Anthony also displays his body as a competitive natural bodybuilder, a sport compatible with the type of fitness modeling he often does. In fact, it is Anthony's amazing physique that separates him from the average male model. At 5' 11", and just under 200 pounds, Anthony trims down to compete in the middleweight class, and has garnered his share of big titles, the most recent coming at the 2005 INBF Natural NYC.

Anthony's looks and talent have also allowed him the opportunity to feature on television and film, and in commercials. Of course, being a model, Anthony has appeared in numerous publications, and has featured on the cover of Exercise and Fitness Magazine, Fitness Plus, and Men's Exercise.

Not one to be complacent, Anthony also dances professionally, is a motivational speaker, and owns a personal training business. Perhaps what Anthony is most proud of is the impact he has on the lives of the many people he helps as a personal trainer and online fitness consultant.

I recently spoke with Anthony and he shared his inspirational story with me.

[ Q ] Hi Tony. How is the modeling going? Any big contracts?

    A: Hey David! Modeling is going real well. I don't have any contracts as of yet. I haven't decided on committing myself to a product or supplement. But I have been modeling for various companies and products, especially my friends over at Physique Bodyware. Visit their site at

[ Q ] What got you started in modeling?

    A: Honestly, I wanted to model ever since I started lifting weights. I used to read muscle and fitness magazines and look at the guys on the cover and say "I can do this"! At that time, I wasn't ready because I was 15 years old, and weighed 135 lbs.

    Inside my heart, I was like Arnold Schwarzenegger! Just like I always tell people the story of the kitten that looked in the mirror and saw a lion in its reflection! That's how we should all look at ourselves, with confidence and determination!

[ Q ] Other than obvious good looks, what other qualities are needed to become a successful male model in your view?

    A: Confidence! I see it all the time a great looking guy or girl that is flawless. But yet, they think there fat or ugly. And so they hold their head down and aren't confidant in themselves. This lack of confidence will show in a photograph. The eyes never lie!

[ Q ] What are some of the more positive aspects to being a male model?

    A: I guess it would have to be the traveling. I get to go places I would never go to if it hadn't been for my modeling. Its also a great honor to do what I do, but I never think I'm better than anyone.

[ Q ] What are some of your modeling career highlights?

    A: I have to say the biggest highlight for me was becoming a fitness model. I started out modeling for clothes, but realized that I wanted to look different than the average male model. I didn't want to be 160 lbs. and very "ZOO LANDER" looking.

    I realized this when I was at a club with my friend who was a Big Guess model, he was 6'3 180 lbs. very slim, and looked like a perfect model. One time we entered a contest in a club for a hot body/hot guy contest. I was sure he would beat me.

    He was a supermodel at that time, and very well known. Well let's just say when he got up there and posed, nobody even cared. He was without expression like many models today. Then I went up there and was full of smiles and charisma, and won!

    I knew right then and there, personality was what made me win. It wasn't just my abs and my smile, but what was behind all of that. It was the warmness in my smile and my confidence that won over the audience! So being a fitness model is something I really enjoy.

[ Q ] You also bodybuild. What are some of your career highlights?

    A: When I won the 1997 Mr. Fitness! That started it all for me!

[ Q ] What are your current bodybuilding goals?

    A: I don't have any major goals.

    I am a lifetime natural bodybuilder, my goal is to just get bigger and better for future shows!

[ Q ] To get in your best possible shape, what training and diet strategies do you use?

    A: I always say diet is everything. I get tons of emails everyday at my website regarding diet.

    In order to be a champion, you have to eat like a champion. I eat tons of grilled chicken, fish, lean beef, potatoes, brown rice, oatmeal, etc every 3 hours.

    I train with weights 5 days a week. I create customized diets for people looking to change their body and their lifestyle for success.

[ Q ] What is your view on supplements? Which ones do you use, if any?

    A: I have to admit, I don't use many supplements at all. Although I am a true believer in glutamine.

[ Q ] Did modeling come before bodybuilding, or was it the other way around?

    A: I was a model first, then decided to become a bodybuilder. Lets just say I'm a bodybuilder with a models face.

[ Q ] Has modeling benefited your bodybuilding career in any way?

    A: Yes, I would say so. I like to take care of my hair and skin. All of this is beneficial when your on stage at a bodybuilding show with judges looking at you. They want to see the confidence and charisma I spoke about earlier.

[ Q ] I understand you are also a personal trainer. What do you feel is most important when wanting to get results for your clients?

    A: Diet and persistence! If a client comes to me and says "I want to look like you or someone else", I'll tell them to get cloned because you can't look like anyone. You just want to look the best you can look. We all have different body types and bone structure.

[ Q ] Are bodybuilding and modeling compatible?

    A: Yes, with fitness modeling there is compatibility.

[ Q ] Describe and average day in the life of Tony Catanzaro.

    A: Well, I wake up around 7:30. I go downstairs and make a pot a coffee and cook breakfast for me and my wife Tina. She has her own job close to our home, so I make her breakfast before she goes to work. Then I get into the shower to get ready for my clients for the day. I don't take on too many since I do it because I love it, not just for the money.

    Remember, once you do something just for money you become a very cold hearted person like a robot. You should get some enjoyment from your work, otherwise you will be very unhappy. I have a little break in the afternoon, that's when I train myself at the gym.

    Then I come back home, cook my meals, and begin with clients again. I usually finish around 8pm, no later. Then I enjoy relaxing before the new day begins. You see, I'm a simple person. You would think a male model is at parties all night, every night. That may be so for some guys, but I like the simple things in life. Remember less is always more.

[ Q ] What are your long terms goals Tony?

    A: My goals today are what they have always been; to help the world get into shape, start eating better, and to understand more about the body. I think knowledge is the greatest tool we could have. If the world knew more about diet and nutrition, there would be less sickness and disease out there.

    The world puts their trust in doctors when they should do their own research on health. I lost my mother to cancer over 12 years ago, she had also put her trust in medical care.

    To make a long story short, they used my mom to try out a new medicine to fight her cancer and stopped giving her treatments of chemo which I think is pure poison.

    Well anyway, the chemo was working so why did they try this new stuff on her? Remember, if there were cures for diseases in which there are, doctors would be out of business. Their only goal is to treat you, not cure you!

    If they cure you, they can't make money on you. "So put down the crap food you have been eating and drinking, and get healthy! Your body and mind will thank you!
