How Did You Get Started?
I grew up in the inner city where you either played sports or you were in a gang. I played softball, basketball, volleyball and I ran track. In 1982, I joined the navy where I continued to play sports and learned how to be an aerobics instructor. I played around in the weight room off and on for about ten years but had never been consistent. When I returned from an overseas assignment in 1998, a very good friend of mine named Mercedes Bazemore was about to enter into her 1st competition and invited me to attend. When she stepped out on that stage my mouth dropped. She looked awesome. I thought to myself, if she could do it then so could I. Eventually, I joined Flex gym in Virginia Beach and Mercedes and I became workout partners. The rest is history.
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
I train four days a week, three-four exercises for each body part and three sets each exercise. Mon quads/calves, Tue back/bis, Thu chest/shoulders/tris, Fri hamstrings/abs. I still love to play softball so I try keep my weekends free to travel to tournaments.
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
I try to keep it basic. I take 5 grams of effervescent creatine and glutamine immediately following my workout. I supplement my protein intake with whey protein twice a day and I take Xenadrine NRG 30 minutes prior to my early morning cardio. I also take a daily multivitamin.
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
Bodybuilding has done so much for me. It's a way of life. It's given me more confidence in myself and my abilities to overcome daily obstacles. It's made me a stronger person inside and out. I love seeing the changes in my body and knowing that I did it myself through diet and consistent training. The guidance that I have received from my friends at Flex gym will stay with me wherever I go. Bodybuilding will always be a part of my life.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
2001 was my first year competing and now I have the fever. I plan to continue competing as long as possible. I am going to do the NPC Virginia/DC state on July 6 and the NPC Armed Forces national on Sept 14. Eventually, I would like to compete in the NPC Team Universe and Master's competitions. My goal is to build as much muscle as possible, while still maintaining my femininity.
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Be consistent! Consistency in your diet as well as your training program will pay off in the long run. I found out the hard way that even in the "off-season", you need to eat as healthy as possible. You have to eat the appropriate amounts of protein, carbs and good fats to maintain that hard earned muscle and still be able to see it. Try not to get to the point where you know it's under there but you've got that layer of fat covering it up so you can't see it working.
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
Carla Dunlap, Cory Everson, Lenda Murray and my mentor, Mercedes Bazemore.
