Simply put, without weights, a bodybuilder is going to have a lot of problems reaching his goals. Many gym memberships are made on a monthly or yearly basis, so if your friend's membership is due to expire, buying him some extra time would be much appreciated. For those that work out at home, some new dumbbells or other weights would be a great addition to their dream gym.

Gym bags, lifting straps, sweat bands and water bottles & shakers are essential components to any bodybuilder's arsenal as well, and are great choices.

Let's be honest, most bodybuilders love to eat. However, tuna and brown rice can get a little boring after a while, so why not treat your friend to something different for a change? Know someone who's always on the go? Grab some protein bars. Or how about a high-end cut of meat or fish? Items to aid in food preparation are also great choices as well - a grill, microwave or even a lunch bag can go a long way.

Bonus Question
If You Could Receive One Gift Related To Bodybuilding & Fitness, What Would It Be? Why?
dots

To be honest, I'd be thankful for anything right now, but I am in dire need of some new weights. While I'm happy that I've made strength gains, it's disappointing that I don't have enough weights at home to really challenge myself for maximum strength. Also, weights are extremely versatile, so whether I'm bulking, cutting or maintaining, they will always be useful.

One thing I think every bodybuilder needs, though, is support. The bodybuilding lifestyle can be difficult and if you're not competing, it can be difficult to maintain motivation year-round. However, compliments from friends and family can be a great boost, and the knowledge that the ones you care about are supportive of your goals is some great food for thought.

Christmas List
What Would Be On A Bodybuilder's Christmas List?
dots

Bodybuilders have fairly unique Christmas lists. A bodybuilder would of course be thrilled to receive a batch of cookies for Christmas, however, they certainly wouldn't be enjoyed quite as much as 2lbs of whey protein in a flavor they haven't tried before. I'll speak to some things that I wouldn't mind getting for Christmas:

First and foremost, a gift certificate to an online store or sports merchandise store would be excellent. Gift certificates are great and are the best way to make sure the bodybuilder you're buying for is happy. Gift certificates can seem rather impersonal however, and some people want a gift that shows some more thought.

A few things that bodybuilders are constantly in need of:

dots
arrow Gym Clothes:
dots

I know I am always looking for ways around doing laundry every other day, the best solution, have more clothes! Gym shorts, pants, t-shirts, sleeveless shirts, moisture wicking materials, even some good sneakers all make great gifts.

dots
arrow Gym Accessories:
dots

Gloves, weight belt, lifting straps, or headphones. Very rarely do gloves last more than 3 months for me, so a stock pile of gloves would be great. Obviously check on need, maybe your bodybuilder already has a weight belt they won't give up and a trusty set of headphones, but if the headphones they're using have all the foam gone or don't work like they used to, this would be a great gift.

dots
arrow Wii:
dots

Along these lines, I think a great gift would be a Nintendo Wii with WiiFit. This is starting to get on the more expensive side, but well worth it in my opinion.

This is a way to get friends involved in staying healthy as well. You could invite all your friends over and have a tennis tournament or a boxing match. I know I work up a decent sweat when I play Wii Boxing. Wii is a great rainy day activity, great on my rest day to burn a few extra calories while still playing video games. I really feel like it's a great all around present.

dots
arrow Kitchen Gadgets:
dots

Kitchen gadgets are also a nice touch. Bodybuilders have to be very conscience in the kitchen and some gadgets can certainly help. A nice wok would be a great gift, as would a rice cooker, blender, food scale, knife set, or a cookbook.

If you're on a budget for Christmas but still want to give some nice gifts for a bodybuilder you know, there are a few options:

Who couldn't use a new shaker bottle? These things max out at about $6 and are a great stocking stuffer. dots
arrow Protein:
dots

1/2 pound bags of protein can be bought for under $20 and are a nice way for a bodybuilder to experiment with other flavors. I know I buy chocolate and vanilla in the biggest bulk I can get. So if someone wanted to get me a 1 lb. bag of creamy banana whey or caramel swirl casein, I wouldn't complain. It's nice to break up the same-old, same-old every once and awhile.

dots
arrow Foods:
dots

There are also several food items that I find too pricey to buy on a weekly basis that would be a great cheap present. These foods may include wheat germ ($6), Irish steel cut oatmeal ($7), or a nice steak from a local organic farmer's market ($20).

Money Not An Issue?
What Are Some Of The Best Gifts To Give A Bodybuilder If Money Is Not An Issue? Describe In Detail What Those Items Are And Why They Might Be Useful.
dots

The best gift I can think of for someone that has no monetary concerns would be an amount of time with a personal trainer. This is especially useful for someone such as me, who trains alone. You could find a trainer nearby, perhaps someone that used to compete and buy a 3-month to a 1-year session with them.

A personal trainer provides a little extra motivation, someone to push just a little harder, and can make you reach goals even faster. Plus a personal trainer will have a few different ideas as far as training and eating is concerned, and it's good to mix things up now and then.

If you wanted to be really fancy you could find a trainer that doubles as a dietary specialist and even prepares meals. There's not much better than not having to worry about preparing all those high protein, low-fat meals.

Another great idea for someone with lots of cash flow would be to pay for their favorite bodybuilder's gym membership for a year. Gym dues are getting more and more expensive and being able to spend that extra cash on supplements every month would make any bodybuilder very happy!

dots
Bonus Question
If You Could Receive One Gift Related To Bodybuilding & Fitness, What Would It Be? Why?
dots

My dream gift would be a trip out to see the Mr. Olympia competition. This is bodybuilder heaven. So many companies pushing products, muscle heads everywhere, literature to read, ideas to use, and the best of the best in our sport competing.

I would fill my luggage with samples, fill my digital camera with pictures, and fill my head with inspiration to achieve the goals I've set for myself. It's like a World-Series ticket to a baseball fan; the premier event for any bodybuilder.

  • Protein (whey, casein, egg, soy, wheat, or gemma ) - Skip La Cour notes the importance of protein in the Ironman's Ultimate Guide to Bodybuilding Nutrition. "I would go so far as to say that 75% of the money you spend on food and supplements should go for protein" (Sisko,4).
  • Workout Clothes - They allow you to be comfortable and look good. You can buy some new shoes for cardio training.
  • Gym Bag - You put items in your gym bag like your workout clothes.
  • Food - The number one source to build muscle and lose fat.
  • Supplements - If your training and diet are on track, add these in for a boost to recovery and your workouts.
  • Gift Certificate - You can have whatever you like.
  • Workout/Training Journal - It keeps track of anything.
  • MP3 Player - Gets you pumped up.

On A Budget
What Are Some Of The Best Gifts To Give A Bodybuilder When On A Budget? Describe In Detail What Those Items Are And Why They Might Be Useful.
dots

A good gift to give to a bodybuilder is a brand new workout shirt and some brand new shorts. Clothes make the man and the woman. They liven you up and make you feel confident anywhere you go. A new gym outfit can help you mentally in the gym and help you push past plateaus. Self-motivation in the gym is also a great tool so why not buy a bodybuilder something that will have them feeling good.

Another gift to give a bodybuilder is a gym bag. He/She can carry away their gym bag to the workout room. They can store their supplements in the bag along with workout clothes and a towel if they need it.

Gym bags are popular items for bodybuilder and are not that expensive. Gym bags keep you focused and ready for the gym. No need to hold your clothes in your hand when you can lug it around in a comfortable gym bag.

Also, in this gym bag you could include a towel to dry off and a shaker bottle to take your powder supplements before, during, and after working out. It is a win-win for all.

When you go in the gym many of us hear the constant chatter of people and weights hitting the ground hard. I hear this in my gym and also hear the music over the loudspeaker.

How can you workout listening to John Mayer? I love John Mayer's music outside of the gym, but this is not the place. Why not block out this music and pump your own tunes courtesy of an MP3 player, Windows Zune, iPod Shuffle, or anything else.

Music gets me focused and pumped up in the gym to hit the weights hard. Also, you can buy a mp3 card (iPod store or Rhapsody), so they can load tracks on the player. Therefore, you can keep your bodybuilding friend on the legal side of the law.

Every bodybuilder needs to keep track of their workouts and things they put in their body. You need a workout/nutrition journal; this comes in handy. It allows you to keep yourself honest when working out or tracking how many calories you take in. You can also keep track of cardio training too.

Why not buy an inspirational book or movie. Pumping Iron gets me motivated to workout when I am stressed beyond belief. Books and videos are great tools to reduce the amount of stress in your life and keep you healthy.

Before supplementing, the first step in getting big is eating a high protein, moderate carb, low-fat diet. Food is the first and best source in getting big in bodybuilding. You can go to a warehouse that specializes in larger quantities at discounts (i.e. Sam's Club, Costco, and others) and literally go crazy - egg whites or whole eggs can be bought cheaply, as well as meat (chicken breast, turkey, and etc), and others.

You can stock up on carb sources like oatmeal, whole grains, vegetables, and other low glycemic items. Also, you can get fats like natural peanut butter and fats from nuts. Warehouses that sell in larger quantities at discounts are the real deal.

I almost forget to include this. When you can't hit up the gym, you need weights at home. Why not purchase your friend a bench, barbell, and some dumbbells. This can save them money by not going to the gym and allows them not to make excuses if the weather is too cold, too hot, or raining.

No more excuses when you provide the equipment in the comfort of your home. You can add in a pullup bar and some resistance bands. Resistance bands and a jump rope can travel with you in a hotels, motels and wherever you go. Throw in a medicine ball and bosu balls and you are set.

Bonus Question
If You Could Receive One Gift Related To Bodybuilding & Fitness, What Would It Be? Why?
dots

If I could receive a gift, it would be a gift certificate from Bodybuilding com. I could pick whatever I want and not worry about liking the gift or not. I would not have to worry about returning it at all.

Gift certificates would allow me to get stuff I can only dream of or can't afford. I could get 10 pounds of whey for around 50 to 80 dollars and be set for a couple of months. Gift certificates are the bomb ladies and gentlemen.
