Especially During The Hot Sultry Days Of Summer.
Joe makes sure to rock out the beach with a real live honest-to-goodness bodybuilding, figure and bikini contest held on the outdoor stage surrounded by the colorful boardwalk, sparkling beach, gymnastic pit, weight pen, basketball and handball courts and spectator bleachers.
Competitive athletes come from around the world just to set foot on the stage in hopes of winning a title and creating a little bit of history.
Arriving At Muscle Beach
I arrived at the beach with bodybuilding Hall-of-Fame inductee, legendary
Bill Grant who flew in to support the event from his hometown in NJ. Bill is proud to be a part of Muscle Beach history and have his legacy remembered with a bronze plaque that is installed in the Bodybuilding Walk of Fame line up placed around the outside of the weight pen area. Bodybuilding.com sponsors all plaques and Bill and I both think the Muscle Beach events are some of the best shows on the planet.
We had visited Joe at the beach a couple of days before and had met
Bishoy Hanna, one of the athletes - all the way from Egypt - who would be competing in the novice division at the show.
Bishoy was so pumped to better his score and win (he had been working out at the pit every day for 8 hours at a time)! He looked great and was so enthusiastic. His dedication is a reminder to us seasoned pros on how the fire of competition burns so brightly in the heart of a beginner that has a dream and goes all out to achieve it.
This mindset of setting goals is truly what the grass roots of Muscle Beach is all about to a bodybuilder. Bishoy had competed at Muscle Beach in past shows and placed in the top 5 (novice division), twice in his weight class. This was not enough for Bishoy - he wanted to win the title! We could tell he had worked hard and he looked great.
We all talked bodybuilding and Bill and I gave him some last minute tips and took some pictures with him. Bill and I took a picture together underneath his Bill Grant Nutrition banner that was hung up on the Muscle Beach stage. After the beach, off we went to Gold's Gym where we met up with IFBB Pros Chris Cormier and Stan McQuay before having lunch at the Firehouse.

The Morning Shows
The morning of the show was media jump-started by a TV crew (with a live feed) from the Fox 11 News program,
Good Day LA. After registration and weigh-ins the athletes went into the weight pen to complete their contest prep. Satellite host Gina Silva was on the spot reporting for the popular morning news show.
In between news segments the studio hosts cut to Gina who would interview competitors while applying color and pumping up giving the TV audience a feel for what it was like to be backstage at a
Muscle Beach contest. The camera caught it all and the program played a number of times during the day and evening in the LA market and on syndicated sister stations nationwide, adding to the thrill and excitement of the show.
Prejudging began at 10 AM and entertained an already busy beach crowd. Competitors flexed, posed and performed quarter turns for the judges under the perfect blue Venice Beach skies.
Top bodybuilding and fitness photographers like Jerry Fredrick, Bill Dobbins, Ron Avidan and Ian Sitren were everywhere, both backstage and out in the Expo crowd, snapping away to document the event for the industries popular websites, magazines and message boards, so fans from all around the world could see the event through their professional camera lenses.
The Fitness Expo
The fitness Expo is a big part of the event and
Iron Man Magazine is one of the main sponsors and vendors. I was booked at the Iron Man booth and my day was jam-packed as I gave out case after case of free Iron Man magazine issues to the delighted fans in between taking pictures and handing out trophies.
Right next to me in the Bodybuilding.com booth was Jerome "Hollywood" Ferguson. He worked hard giving out goodie bags and event T-shirts to the crowd, handing out trophies and even guest posing during the finals! Jerome is always a crowd pleaser and fans can see how much he loves being at the Muscle Beach shows.
The beach crowd is filled with all types of spectators who come to see the show and browse the fitness expo. Some fly there from far away, others drive, bike, walk or rollerblade!
It is great to see my friends at the beach shows and while I was at the booth, Muscle Beach sponsor and supporter, Eric "The Trainer" Fleishman stopped by with his son sporting his new sponsor gear from one of my favorite products, Xstatic.

Then a fellow writer for
Natural Muscle Magazine, Ian Graham, came by to introduce himself to me. When our Florida based publisher, Debbie Bagarie heard he was attending the event from out of the country, she told him he had to find me and say hello.
Ian would be staying in LA with a friend - to train for 3 months - and was looking forward to living in the Marina Del Rey area. I found out he was staying in the same complex as my newly wedded friend, IFBB Fitness Pro Nicole Rollolazo-Dawson. Small world indeed! I love seeing old friends and meeting new ones at Muscle Beach! We all have a blast there every time.
Finals for trophy presentation started at 1 PM with all athletes onstage behind the color guard for the Star Spangled Banner and salute. Special awards were presented along with a new inductee into the Bodybuilding Hall of Fame which went to 1957 Mr. Universe Pro, 1963 Mr. America and 1983 Sr. Mr. America title holder,
Iron Man Magazine publisher John Balik presented the award to Reg who was thrilled to have his plaque installed into the Bodybuilding Walk of Fame. After the special awards and guest posers, competitors went through their own posing routines to music and quarter turns onstage, class by class, for placement and trophy presentation.

Muscle Beach truly has an international flavor proven by winner of the overall bikini division, a crowd-pleasing new category - won by the beautiful
Victoria Kirsanova from Russia and (are you listening?) our friend, Bishoy Hanna from Egypt, who won the overall novice bodybuilding title!
Bishoy had conquered his dream of winning not only his weight category, but the overall as well! Congratulations to all of the athletes who participated! There was something for everyone in the show; even a husband and wife couple with a romantic routine in the mixed pairs category.

Because Muscle Beach is a non-sanctioned contest, it draws its athletes from a much wider base of experience and motivation, for competition often has much more meaning behind it than just winning a trophy.
Bishoy was beside himself with pride and Bill and I could tell he had been bit by the bodybuilding bug (and bitten but good)! He posed on the red carpet over and over again for the photographers and thanked Bill and I for our support and advice.
We were so proud and happy for him. Bill told him to savor his moment and enjoy his time in the sun. I asked him what he wanted to eat after the show since he had been on his contest diet program for some time. He told me he had stopped by Burger King (on the way to the show) and bought 5 whoppers to eat after the event! 5 whoppers later and he was back in training. This guy was in the goal zone and it sure showed.
Next up on the Muscle Beach agenda - Joe let Bill and I in on his exciting project coming up in December - a Bodybuilding.com sponsored parade, complete with a float and a toy drive! To top it off there will be a ceremonial Time Capsule burial sponsored by Iron Man Magazine right in center stage under the concrete floor.

Buried Beneath The Muscle Beach Stage In December.
Special thought is being put together to choose carefully what will go into the time capsule (to be opened in 50 years). What would you suggest putting into it? What would you want future generations to see that would be a part of our time here in the bodybuilding world at Muscle Beach? Find out this December!
Would you like to be a part of bodybuilding history and compete at Muscle Beach or just attend? Go to www.musclebeachvenice.com and mark your calendars for 2010 on Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day. We'll be there to welcome you with open arms.
Until then, take care of yourself. You're worth it.
