FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - January 18, 2006
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Boxing legend Smokin' Joe Frazier will be in Columbus March 3 to receive the Arnold Classic Lifetime Achievement Award during the Friday Night Fights, Gracie Fighting Championships at Nationwide Arena.
The Legendary Joe Frazier:
Frazier, the heavyweight champion from 1970-73 who participated in an epic trilogy of bouts with Muhammad Ali during the golden age of the sport, will receive the award from California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger during the live pay-per-view telecast of the Friday Night Fights, Gracie Fighting Championships, a new event this year at the Arnold Sports Festival.
"Joe Frazier was not only a legendary boxer, but one of the rare athletes who transcended his sport to become one of the most famous athletes in the world," said James J. Lorimer, Director of the Arnold Sports Festival. "It is our honor to have him come to Columbus, Ohio to become the first boxer to receive the Arnold Classic Lifetime Achievement Award."
Frazier had a career record of 32-4-1 with 27 knockouts. His most famous fights came against Ali. The first was in March 1971 in Madison Square Garden, when Frazier became the first professional boxer to beat the seemingly unbeatable Ali with a 15th-round knockout.
The first rematch came in 1974; with Ali winning a decision to set up what many believe was the greatest fight of all time. In the "Thrilla in Manilla" in the Philippines on Oct. 1, 1975, Ali beat Frazier when the latter refused to come out for the 15th round after the two pummeled each other over the first 14 rounds.
