How Did You Get Started?

Well, that was a decision a trainer at the gym made for me and him. He decided that it was time for me to do something different. Once I started, I got the bug. Seeing results as quick as I did made me think, "Wow your body is a machine, and you can do whatever you want, if you just do it."

We trained hard 3 times a week, and I worked out on my own. Getting those glares from across the workout floor certainly made me work harder as well. Members, friends and my family could not get over my transformation. There were the few that thought I was crazy as I was 40 after all, yeah right I thought. 40 is just a number. Now I am 48 and have a blast training, experimenting with exercise to see what makes my body tick.

Motivating others was very important to me as well. My first show I placed 2nd! The Heart of Texas. Wow that was fun! I couldn't believe it. When I went back this year, people from back then - 6 years ago - remembered me and were so nice.

I still get the odd "why are you doing this to yourself". If they would only get on board a little bit, they would see why. Some of my friends have attempted to do just a bit of the dieting and have had success. Imagine if they had total discipline - wow!

People often think figure gals don't eat. When I show them how many calories I eat, they can't believe it. And sure, I have a cheat meal - we are only human. I enjoy a glass of red wine - I work in a winery. I have fun, enjoy the journey, the people, the pump, the discipline and it's mine. When life gets tough, and trust me it can, I have "this" - Figure training! It's mine and no one can affect it but me.

It's pretty cool to be in charge of something so awesome and get results. If I had a dollar for the number of gals and even men that I have had comments from on how awesome I look, I'd be rich. We do have to be careful, because we can't always be stage perfect (not that I am by any means), we have to remember off season 10 lbs is ok.

We have the determination to take that off and work again. It's like a new job all over again, but fun!! Exciting!! I can't wait to be 50 on stage. This year I am 48. I have two kids who are also athletic. My daughter is a competitive cheerleader - we have ab competitions and my son tries to out "gun" me. Not happening. He is a college golfer, and sometimes gets embarrassed of his mom in a bikini, but then his friends think it's awesome.

So to answer the question "how did you get started" I get started every day. Each workout is a new challenge. I enjoy that feeling...most of the time.

I like to do my cardio early in the morning followed by weight training. I do 1 hour cardio each day, usually running with sprints or step mill level 10, with intervals up to level 17. I might have my waxy maize/protein shake and a fat burner to get me going.

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

Low, low carbs! And high protein. It works best for me to have my carbs very early in the day and I enjoy a casein protein shake before bed. Sometimes I make protein brownies, that's a great cheat meal.

If my late meal got really late, I would have an Iso100 Protein shake. No calories to mention, no carbs, sugar, fat. Just 25g protein. Berry flavor was the best and stirred well with a spoon.

And, I used Sundays to pre cook for the week. People always talk about time, or lack thereof. If the oven is on, it's full. If the grill is on, it's full. Cooking 20 chicken breasts at a time was and is a way of cooking in my house. It's about convenience during the week. All my veggies are cut up and in Tupperware. My egg white oatmeal pancakes are made and frozen, and I just pop them in the toaster.

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

I really have great success with Xtend; I use 6 scoops a day. I never get too sore and have no discomfort. I tested that this season by taking a break from it, and I can tell a difference. I am going to start a similar product for this season. I do not have a favorite fat burner. My body reacts best to changing supplements up.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

It makes me feel great. When there are day to day stresses that you have no control over, this sport allows me to have something I can control, get results and have a good feeling of success. I like it as it also motivates people around me to want to do better with their fitness and eating plans. My family also gets on board, some of the time : with better food choices.

I have been involved in fitness since I was thrown in last minute to sub a class for a no show instructor at the age of 17. I have never missed a week without exercise. It is part of my lifestyle. However, I needed to have more for "me". Always being the trainer and instructor did not offer enough physical results. I put a lot of energy into my clients and needed a venue to do that for me. This was perfect and is a blast. The people involved are fun to be around and really have a high standard for wellness and appearance. It has rubbed off on many of my friends. Great inspiration.

What Motivates You To Follow A Healthy Lifestyle?

To stay young and healthy. To show my college children that it's a good thing to eat right, exercise and that age is just a number. My kids are both athletes and have really understood the need for good nutrition and exercise to do well in their sports and day to day life. It's a great place to burn up stress.

What Made You Want To Achieve Your Goals?

Just seeing results from changing my diet, cardio exercises, and lifting heavier weights. I had good results fast and I could not believe that all these years I have taught classes and worked out with weights was not doing it anymore. The small changes made me go harder. What a nice surprise. Women are afraid to lift heavy weights as they think they will get bulky. This really needs to be emphasized in the fitness world as, no you won't if you do it right. Weight training is important for bone density, fat burning and muscle growth. More education related to this needs to be addressed in the fitness facilities.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

To compete again this August 2010. I just competed in the Ronnie Coleman Classic. I placed 5th, which I am completely pleased with. I went into it without dieting hard enough. I got the placing I deserved. I was late getting focused, found excuses and the end result was to work harder to do better. My plan is to diet harder and train harder. I need to work on my legs, specifically quads and hamstrings. I am going to listen to the judge's critiques and see what I can do to show that.

I would also like to go to Vegas in November with a friend and compete there. I enjoy the journey. One of my trainers taught me that. "If you like the journey, enjoy the sport, then winning shouldn't be the end result you are looking for." This is very true for me. I have placed 1st - 5th, have done 10 shows and have always had a great time with fellow competitors, backstage, being inspirational, and looking good! It just all feels right to me. This I owe to Jeff Dewelle in Plano, Texas. He is an awesome trainer, competitor and judge. Yes winning is always nice, but for me it's also about the journey. I thank him for those words of wisdom.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

Just to enjoy it and constantly challenge yourself. Dieting is hard, but you can have fun too. Learn about foods, herbs and spices. Then it all becomes more enjoyable.

Keep a log of everything you do. This will help you to look back and see what progress you have made and how you can better your end result. Just have fun! Life's too short after all.

Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?

Jenny Lynn of course. What a great motivator. I went to a seminar one show and she and Elaine Goodlad spoke about being realistic during the off season, body fat issues and more. They were awesome. I was lucky enough to train with Jenny for a short time while she lived in Dallas. Wish I could afford more of her expertise. Getting a women's perspective was awesome.

Jeff Dewelle of course! He has all the tools and will not steer you wrong. I have met with many gals and guys who have trained with him, and it is unanimous - he is great! Jeff offers all areas needed to get the job done. The training/posing sessions I have had with Jeff were awesome and encouraging.
