How Did You Get Started?

I am a retired U. S. Navy Captain and a competitive bodybuilder, two achievements of which I'm quite proud. I became serious about physical fitness when I turned 50 and discovered I had some of the health problems that caused the early death of my father and grandfather. As a parent of two young children, I didn't want to follow the path of my parent and grandparent, so I embarked on a rigorous diet and workout plan that I have maintained since that time. As I near my 64th birthday, I still have some of the problems my family has had but I have stayed healthy.

One day, three years ago, my wife commented on how good I looked. I was a 61-year-old, 5' 7" tall, 150 pounds man with an athletic build. She said, "Scott, you look darn good, actually better than some of the younger men in the gym. Have you ever thought about entering a competition?" I said, "A what?" She said, "Compete, enter a bodybuilding contest, see if you can do it." I couldn't believe my ears when I heard myself say, "OK, I will."

In March of 2005, after training for 10 months, I entered my first competition, a non-tested NPC event. In the following 21 months I entered 15 more tested and non-tested contests, winning 31 weight, height and age class trophies, including the 2006 FAME WNSO Men's Masters 60+ World Championship in Toronto in June.

At 63 years of age I won my Masters Pro Card at the 2006 NGA National Bodybuilding & Figure World Championships in Georgia (September, 2006) and a second Masters Pro Card at the 2006 IDFA Canadian Classic II in Toronto (November, 2006).

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

I workout 90 minutes a day, five days a week with a training partner at Gold's Gym in Birmingham. My partner, Dave Gallahan, Jr., is 27 years old, weighs 210 pounds, is 6' 2" tall and, like me, is training to earn his Pro Card. We have twin goals and we work hard to help each other achieve our goals.

I consider my training program to be quite advanced. It's not for the feint of heart. I do a combination of Advanced GH Workouts, coupled with HIIT cardio. For the uninitiated, I work on RMs, or Maximum Rate of Failure sets. For instance, a 6 RM exercise calls for failure at the 6th rep of a set and 12 RM calls for failure at the 12th rep.

Here is a rundown of what this program entails:

Monday & Thursday:

    Advanced HIIT Cardio Workout
    Cardio Only on Monday and Thursday
    Workout Followed by Cardio on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday

    • Begin each cardio session with a five minute warm-up. After the warm-up do the following:
    • 20 seconds sprint and 40 seconds at a reduced level - five intervals
    • Use 9 - 12% incline @ 9-12 mph
    • Add one minute (20/40) per week until you reach 10 intervals
    • After the sprints, do 25 minutes on a different machine (do 15 minutes on workout days)

    Pre AM Workout

    2-3 scoops of Glutamine Select, 30 grams liquid carbs and 15 grams of whey with 5 grams of Creatine Select

    Post AM Workout
    1 scoop Muscle Provider and 2 scoops of Gatorade and 5 grams Creatine Select

    Meal 1
    8 egg whites, 1 yoke, 1/2 cup oatmeal

    Meal 2
    6 oz chicken, turkey breast or tuna

    Meal 3
    8 oz tuna or other lean protein

    Meal 4
    8 oz chicken, turkey breast or tuna, 2/3 cup brown rice

    Meal 5
    6 egg whites, 1/2 cup oatmeal

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

I am a big fan of Beverly International's entire supplement line. I have shown great gains by using Ultra 40, Muscle Synergy and Ultra Size Protein Powder. When cutting for a contest, I have had great success with Beverly's Lean Out, 7-Keto MuscLEAN, Energy Reserve and GH Factor and also Designer Supplement's Lean Xtreme, Melting Point and Basic Cuts.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

I love our sport because a guy my age can train and do all the things that are required to be a competitive bodybuilder and then have the opportunity to put it all on the line to see how I measure up. My goal is to step onto the stage at each contest in the best physical shape of my life.

In my first 12 contests, I have done just that. I have counted on my discipline, work ethic and strong desire to achieve my results. I have won against men who could be my sons and I have won against my contemporaries. I am a smart body builder, who knows how to take advantage of the tools of the trade. I love our sport and I will continue to compete and live a healthy life style for as long as I can. It sure beats fly-fishing.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

My current goal is to train for the next three months without entering any contests, add some size to my 140+ pounds body and compete to earn my Natural Master's Pro Card by the end of the year. I am confident I will achieve this goal. I will compete as a Master's Pro for a few seasons and then hang up my posing suit and continue teaching what I know about our sport to other young and older up and comers.

Two great Master Bodybuilders come to mind: Sean "Sully" Sullivan, from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, who was recently Profiled as an Over 40 Amateur Bodybuilder of the Week and Neal Grossman from Baltimore, MD. They are both gentlemen of the sport and avid competitors from whom I have learned a great deal.
