How Did You Get Started?
I got started competing when I met Denny Kakos, President of the ABA/INBA, in Laughlin, Nevada in 1993. He encouraged me to compete. I won the Overall ABA International Forever Natural one year later. Since then, I have won 5 overalls and never placed lower than third. I was also ABA Rookie of the year in 1994.
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
Back & Biceps:
- Pullups 4x to failure
- Deadlift 4x15
- T-Bar Row 4x15
- Reverse Grip Pulldowns 4x15
- Bent Over Barbell Rows 4x15
- Preacher Curls 4x15
- Hammer Curls 4x15
Chest & Triceps:
- Bench Press 4x15
- Close-Grip Bench Press 4x15
- Dips 4x10
- Dumbbell Pullovers 4x10
- Triceps Extension 4x15
I never do the same workout twice and love drop sets, static holds, rest pause, and complete and total failure of moving the weight one inch. I rest minimally between sets and often drop to the floor gasping for breath after my working set to failure.
I live and train by the motto - What would you do with your life if you knew you could not fail!
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
Off season I eat anything and everything. I keep my protein very high and do not count calories. My main goal is to get stronger. My metabolism is very fast and I install and refinish wood floors for a living. I usually only gain 10 pounds off season.
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
I love bodybuilding because it requires only yourself to succeed. Training and sweating almost every day clears my head and humbles me. Even though I train to win every show I enter, I would much rather make good friends and enjoy a competition without pressure, rather than worrying who was the best bodybuilder of the day.
Do your thing and try to be better every show. The only competition I have is to be better than I was last time. That is why it is so easy for me to dial it all in. I'm the guy who waits till the last minute to pull his baggy clothes off and then your jaw hits the floor because I know I did my homework.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
I am going back to coaching my kids after the 2008 season and it may be a few more years before I appear onstage again. I love the sport, but life is short and I love spending time with my kids who are only 7 and 9. I would love to help other Naturals obtain the same goals I have.
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Warm up, test your strength and don't be afraid to fail. Search for the pump. Feel the pain of lactic acid and then go home! Keep your protein high and quit training your best body part and start hammering your worst. You are only as big as your weakest link!
