How Did You Get Started?
I have been involved in the fitness industry for 11 years, mostly as a fitness instructor. And one thing I remember back in the beginning was watching all the girls on TSN performing their fitness routines. I was so inspired by their abilities, that I got the itch to compete. However, I am from Saskatchewan and there were no opportunities to get involved in the sport where I lived. So when I moved to Calgary and began working at Fitness on 5th, my opportunity arose. There I met Meghan Cooke, former fitness competitor, she was the one who helped me get started. Thanks Meghan!
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
My training program is always changing. And I find that the amount it changes helps me achieve better results. Currently I am working through a full periodization program. It is 14 weeks long and includes all aspects of training; endurance, strength, hypertrophy and transition. It has been a very effective workout and I thank my great trainer, Jan, for that!!!
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
I have certain guidelines that I follow everyday.
- 1. Drink at least 4 litres of water
- 2. Eat 6-7 small meals each day
- 3. Eat protein with every meal
- 4. No carbs after 4pm
- 5. Vitamin supplements every day.
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
I am very minimal with my supplement intake as I wish to compete as natural as possible. So my supplements include Protein Powder, Vitamins and Glutamine. Glutamine has helped tremendously for my muscle recovery after tough workouts.
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
Fitness is an addiction. It’s like chocolate; once you get a taste of it you just can’t stop. People do not realize how good you can feel after working out. And shockingly enough, my favourite part of the training process for fitness is the diet (well it is a love hate relationship). I have found that since I started training in fitness and have improved my eating habits; my body rejects bad foods now. It is much easier to resist chocolate cake and cookies when you know your body will respond poorly to them.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
I am currently training for the WNSO 2005 competition season. My plans are to compete in the Figure and Model Search divisions in Calgary and Vancouver and then qualify for the Pro Division for FAME 2005.
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Create schedules. I find that one thing that has kept me going is the fact that I workout at the same time everyday. My body has gotten so use to training at that particular time that if I do not train, I am very tired for the remainder of the day. And get a training partner! It makes you accountable and your partner will help keep you focused and on track. Thanks Mark, you are the best training partner ever!
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
I admire all fitness competitors and body builders as it takes so much dedication and commitment to be involved in this sport. I think anyone who has that level of commitment and desire deserves recognition. Congrats to everyone!!!!
