How Did You Get Started?

I "played" around with weights for years and was getting tired of not seeing results. I wanted to take turning 40 more seriously. I realized I couldn't eat the way I was eating and drink the way I was drinking. It was time to get healthy. I didn't like the way I looked, and I didn't like the way I felt. It was definitely time for a change.

I needed some help to get to a level I have never been to. I came across Steve Poynter on BodySpace and checked out his website. I thought his plans were very reasonably priced and I went for it. Steve set me up with a meal and workout plan geared to my goals. It is a workout plan that changes every 2 weeks and is very challenging.

I am a landscape contractor which can be an advantage because I get a good workout in during the day. It can also be a disadvantage because I workout all day and I still have to get my scheduled workout in. The meal plan was easier than I expected. I did not feel deprived from food because I ate every 3 hours.

The diet consisted of lean proteins, mixed with the right complex carbs. The Team Poynter Facebook page is an outstanding group of people trained by Steve which offer great support and motivation. The SuperSite on is loaded with great articles on every aspect of health, nutrition, and fitness.

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

I was on a plan that changed every 2 weeks. My cardio consisted of 4 days of 40 minutes on the elliptical. Sunday cardio consisted of riding my bicycle 5 miles to the local running track, doing a sprint workout of 8 sprints of varying intensity and riding home. This is a sample of 2 weeks in the middle of the program every day begins with 10 minutes warm-up of cardio on either the stationary bike or elliptical. Each workout ends with 10-15 minutes of stretching of the muscle group worked that day.

Day 1: Chest/Shoulders/Triceps
Day 2: AM Cardio/Legs
Day 3: Back/Biceps/Abs
Day 4: Chest/Shoulders/Triceps
Day 5: Legs
Day 6: Back/Biceps/Abs
Day 7: Off

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

SciVation's Xtend has really helped with recovery at my age. Cellucor's C4 is my pre-workout of choice. Optimum Nutrition's Nitro Core 24 and Casein proteins are the protein powders that I have seen the greatest results from.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

I love how it has changed my body, and my health for the better. The best feeling is when you complete a workout and leave nothing in the gym but your sweat. I love moving heavy weight. There is rush that comes over me after a set of deadlifts when I realize that I just moved a total of 2,500 lbs in a set.

Your body hits a certain level when you work out that it very obvious to other people that you workout and you get a "glance of respect" from people, a look of "I wish I had the drive to do what you do." There are few things in our lives that we can control. We can have direct control over what goes in our bodies and how we exercise.

What Motivates You To Follow A Healthy Lifestyle?

Steve Poynter and the other Team Poynter members on the group Facebook page offer stories of motivation, failure and success that drive me to push harder and farther. Unfortunately I see many men my age that literally look 55 and are out of shape. I want to be in shape and take care of my body.

What Made You Want To Achieve Your Goals?

I wanted to prove to myself that I could achieve the body I always wanted at the age of 41. Once I started seeing significant results I wanted to see how far I could push and change my body.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

I plan to go on a mass building plan from Steve this fall and winter to gain some more muscle and go on the cutting program again next spring and summer.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

The one tip I can offer to other bodybuilders is to be patient with your results. It truly is a marathon and not a sprint. Results take time.
