Teen Bodybuilder of the Week: Phillip Walsh

Teen Bodybuilder of the Week: Phillip Walsh! - Pics and info and more!

How Did You Get Started?

I got started my Senior year in high school. I was trying to get into better shape for baseball, and I met with Bill Miller, a personal trainer at the Alaska Club. He set me up on a program. After a few months he mentioned that I was starting to look big and offered to help me compete if I wanted to. After baseball season was done I trained for my first show with a lot of help from Bill and I won the Junior Class. Since then I've won first and second place in two other contests in the junior class and I've also set three Alaska state power lifting records in the teen class. (Deadlift-551lbs, Squat-501lbs, Total-1339)

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

When bulking I eat anything I want but I make sure I eat at least 300 grams of protein daily. I like to eat a lot of Chinese food when I'm trying to put on size. When preparing for a contest I eat less carbs and around 380 grams of protein daily. (See my article called "My Sixteen Week Contest Preparation" for details.)

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

I use Optimum Nutrition Whey Protein because it is a great value and I like the taste. I also use Creatine, Glutamine, and Amino Acids. I believe that whole foods are the best source of nutrients but Whey Protein is also great for pre and post workout.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

I love bodybuilding because it is a very challenging sport both mentally and physically, especially when preparing for a contest. I also love to see the changes in my body's appearance and strength. I also love living a healthy lifestyle.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

I am competing in the Emerald Cup, Junior Class, on April 24, 2004. After that I plan to take a few years off from competition and focus on putting size on. I'll probably compete in power-lifting contests while I bulk up. The power lifting keeps me motivated and forces me to push myself with heavier weights.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

Three tips: Judges are human, respect the sport, and bodybuild for yourself and no one else.

Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?

My favorite bodybuilders are Lee Priest, who is coming to Fairbanks this summer, Gunter, Arnold (of course), and also local favorites and training partners Bill Miller, Ethan Wells, Brian Johnson, and Jason Perry.
