How Did You Get Started?
I started out lifting weights after conquering an some health problems in the spring of 2005. At first I started out doing simple exercises such as bench, barbell curls, bent dumbbell rows etc.; in my basement with my dad's old DP Fit For Life Weight Bench. After experiencing some minor results, I decided it was time to take my little underground hobby to the next level. So I joined the local YMCA, and began reading a Beginners Guide To weightlifting book.
After about a half a year at the YMCA, I had gained about 15 pounds and was pretty satisfied with my results. Then, everything changed when one day, a local amateur bodybuilder came to workout at the gym. I had never seen anyone that size in my life! So, I finally got the courage to ask him some questions about how he got the way he was. After awhile of answering questions, we both went back to our workouts. That was the day I knew that I wanted to become a bodybuilder, so I started doing more research and found Bodybuilding.com, where I found out what I'd have to do to have a body somewhat similar to that guy at the gym. After a few days of research on diet and nutrition, I completely changed my diet and workout routine.
Even though I had come along way, I still felt that if I really wanted to get into the sport, I would have to make this one of my top priorities aside from school. After my first few months of actual bodybuilding, I decided to change gyms. After a few days of searching, I finally found one that was about four times the size of the YMCA, and only a half a mile away from my house. At that gym I met many trainers, and other bodybuilders. Through them I received a lot of free advice that has helped me grow still to this day.
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
During the off season, I lift with low reps and high weight, but when about 8 weeks from a contest I usually do high reps with low weight.
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
Nutrition has always been a key aspect in my success in bodybuilding. I make sure I always get my meals in every 2-3 hours. During the school year, I continue to eat with the same schedule as I do in the summer. A lot of teen bodybuilders say that its impossible to eat every 2-3 hours when your at school, but I have never found it a problem. I simply prepare all my meals the night before, put them in plastic containers, and then stuff them in my mouth during a class change or before the bell rings to start class. And yes, I do get a lot of questions and comments at school about why I eat all the time and I simply say "Because I'm Hungry!"
The foods that I eat during the off season are not that much different than the foods that I eat while preparing for a contest. I just simply have more or less carbohydrates and fats, but my protein consistently says the same at around 180-200 grams daily.
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
I must admit that I am one of the typical teenage males who can easily get caught up in believing anything that the supplement company's say their products will do. I have tried many of the main brands that advertise in bodybuilding magazines, such as BSN and MuscleTech, but have not had nearly as good of gains as when I use supplements by ISS. Ever since my nutritionist got me on 4 of their products, gainer,Whey Matrix, Satur8, and Resatur8, I have noticed a tremendous difference in my strength and appearance.
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
I love bodybuilding because its a sport that relies on you and only you to be successful. In other sports, you can blame that bad pass on another teammate, while in bodybuilding you are a one man team, so its all up to you to bring home the gold.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
After bulking the right way for about 8 months, I plan to compete and win in the South Carolina State, Teenage Division in 2008. But in the long road I would like to stick with this sport and possibly do the Teen Nationals when I am 18-19 years old.
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
To never let anyone make you feel less about yourself, not just about the sport but in life in general.
