What Should You Be Looking For?

Price Range
This is the total cost of the product. Remember that these are Bodybuilding.com's prices for the products. True retail prices are MUCH higher and almost all other retailers sell it at a higher cost. We are the cheapest online!

If you choose too low of a price, you may not get the best quality with the highest protein. A search for "Under $10" but with "Over 50 Grams Of Protein" would obviously come up with no matches. Remember that each serving is a FULL MEAL in most cases. How much would you pay for a full meal normally? The price for a protein powder/meal replacement is much lower and will save you money while helping you reach your goals.

Grams Protein Per Serving
This is how many grams of protein there are in one serving, as described on the product label. Usually, the more the better here! Of course, the more protein that is packed in one serving, the more it will cost. Also, sometimes a product will have a TON of protein per serving, but the serving size is TWICE as big as a competitor's product. Keep that in mind to get the most for your money.

The type of protein in each bottle is important too. Watch for that too.

Grams Carbs Per Serving
This depends on your goals. If you are trying to lose weight, you would want a low number of carbs. If you just want to maintain your weight and put on muscle, a medium amount of carbs is right for you. If you are trying to gain weight as fast as possible, you need a ton of carbs for fuel.

Remember that not all carbs are created equal. Be sure to see how many grams of SUGAR is in a serving also. Some products have a lot of high quality carbs and are low in sugar. Some other products have a smaller amount of carbs, but it is almost all pure sugar.

Grams Sugar Per Serving
Most protein powders are really low in sugar. Only weight gainers are high in sugar. Of course, this is not really a good thing either! Sugar is sometimes just a way to make the calorie count LOOK higher ("Contains 5000 calories per serving!") when it actually won't help you gain the right kind of weight. Look for a protein powder that is low in sugar if you are looking to lose weight. If you want to gain weight, try finding a product that has more complex carbs than sugar.

Grams Fat Per Serving
Of course, if you are looking to lose fat or stay lean, you want to pick a protein that is low in fat. Almost all protein powders are extremely low in fat. Most people get enough fat in their diets. Remember that some types of fat are good, like flaxseed oil.

Serving Per Container
This is how many servings you will get out of it. Sometimes a product is in a huge jug and has 50 grams of protein per serving and looks like a great deal! Then you might notice that is has only 8 servings per bottle. This is the only way you will really get a lot of calories and protein because it is rare to find a 30 lb. bottle of protein, and you have to pack all those grams somewhere. This option will help you choose a product that is right for your budget.

Packaging
Do you want a jug of powder that you scoop out, or individual packets in a box? The only difference is that straight powder is almost always cheaper and usually has more servings per container. Packets are very convenient and you can take them with you anywhere easily. There is no measuring to be done either. Just open a packet and pour it into your drink.

Aspartame?
Most products do not have aspartame, but this option will help you eliminate the ones that do if that is something you care about. Most people will just not choose an option on this one.

Low Lactose?
If you are lactose intolertant, you would want to choose YES on this option. The matches will include both low lactose products and NO lactose products. There are a lot to choose from!
