In your opinion what is your favorite protein bar? Base your decision on taste and value.

Here's a list of protein bars I like:

Steel Pro Bars-Peanut. This tastes like a regular candy bar, has 30g of protein 15g carbs and 2g of glutamine

Met-rx-Their Keto-pro bars and the new protein plus bars are pretty good but their too damn expensive! Why are these food bars so expensive? I know their dirt cheap to manufacture!

The Labrada Lean Body bars are pretty good. But again, their kind of expensive.

What I usually do to save money is buy a cheap whey protein(ex. gnc's pro performance whey or optimum nutritions), and take it with an Ironman PR bar(peanut butter). If you buy the Ironman bars at GNC on the first tuesday of the month, it costs you .79 a bar!! Add that to the .50 per serving of your cheap protein drink and the total comes to about $1.29. As opposed to paying $2.50 for the Met-rx protein bars or the Labrada lean body bars.

if you think you are paying over the odds for protein bars, just look at the prices in the u.k they are ••••••• expensive - probably twice the price as in the usa

Meso-Tech Bars are THE BEST TASTING BARS on the Market! I'm eating one as I type this in. I can't get enough of these!

By Pahrumpguru on Monday, January 17, 2000 - 05:59 am: Edit

Meso-tech bars are alright. Sorry they aren't the best in my book they are to dry. The keto-pro bars are really good not to dry and lowish carb and high protein. The Labrada bars are also good. I like the peanut butter and jelly one. My personal taste buds prefer the myoplex bars. I love the peanut butter one. They are high in carbs, but they taste good if you want a healthy cheat meal or post workout meal they work.

LOL Oh Well!

By Pahrumpguru on Monday, January 17, 2000 - 10:24 am: Edit

Well Nate. If you're going to eat one before you workout I'd go for the lower carb and sugar bars. Since you don't want an insulin spike before you workout. You just want a controled blood sugar level that optimizes energy and is high in qualitity proteins to offset muscle catabolism. I'd go with the keto-pro or lean body bars. Even an ironman bar isn't that bad. Whoever anon is who talked about the iron man bar and protein shake option that is pretty econmical and would be a great pre workout meal.

How about Sportspharma Promax bar?

By Nate on Tuesday, January 18, 2000 - 03:26 am: Edit

hey i bought some premier protein bars over at costco for 13 bucks (12 bars)....30/31 grams of protein and 12/19 grams of carbs....is this ok to eat a few hours before i work out?...exactly how many carbs do i not want to ingest before a workout?

By CrazyJoe on Wednesday, January 19, 2000 - 05:56 am: Edit

My favorite is the SportsPharma ProMax® Apple Pie A la Mode! The Truffle aint bad either.. they are moist enuff where you dont need a jug of water to down them..they have 20g Protien, l-glutamine..but the sugar is a bit high. I buy a case for $14.00 that saves a little..

By Pahrumpguru on Wednesday, January 19, 2000 - 07:19 pm: Edit

Nate those bars have a very desirble protein to carb ratio. Ensuring a stable blood sugar level if eaten an hour or so before your workout. Promax bars are good also. Yeah the moisture issue is bad with most bars. Anyone here ever have an old met-rx bar or a meta-form bar? It's like eating bad tasting dry taffy.

By Anonymous on Thursday, January 27, 2000 - 02:40 am: Edit

what about power bars..arent they any good?

By Jon on Tuesday, February 01, 2000 - 04:39 am: Edit

What about Vyo-Pro bars.
20 grams of protein, only 1 gram of sugar. Carbs are low too.
A box of 12 are only $16 I think, and it's from a reputable company.

By Anonymous on Tuesday, February 01, 2000 - 11:04 pm: Edit

Vyo-Pro bars are excellent IF you want to go the low carb route. I personally enjoy the Promax bars and I hate to admit this one because I hate MuscleTech and their ads, but I have to admit their Chocolate Peanut Butter Meso-Tech bar is one of the best tasting bars I have tried. As far as low carb bars go, the pure protein bar is pretty good, lean body bars are also good, the steel pro bars have a decent taste but its like chewing a fricken' rock!!

By Nate on Wednesday, February 02, 2000 - 05:11 am: Edit

Well I conducted my own taste test as follows.... the Pure Protein Bar (Double Chocolate) by WorldWide Nutriton (It was dry and had a powder like consistency, didn't like it)....the Protein Plus bar (Double Fudge) from Met-Rx(It too was like the Pure Protein bar and I didn't much care for it)...and the Lean Body Bar (Mint Chocolate Chip, wow what a great flavor!) by Labrada (in my opinion this is the best tasting bar I have ever tried, I highly recommend it, in fact it tastes just as good as any candy bar I've tried).....I've also tried others worth mentioning such as the Balance Bar(I liked it)....the Power Bar (it was ok)....and the Premier Protein Bar (pretty damn good).....but hey don't take my word for it, I could be wrong....

By Kevin L. on Wednesday, February 02, 2000 - 08:27 pm: Edit

For my money I prefer the Bio-X bars. The peanut butter bar has a good balance of protein and carbs (close to the 40-30-30 balance), is moderatly priced and seems to digest quickly. I buy these by the box and get a 10-20% discount from the stores I buy them from. There are two types of formulations, one with 27 gms of protein and another with 21 gms. The 21 gm bars have a chocolate coatings and are a nice treat once in a while. I've tried the Zone Perfect bars but would rather avoid soy based protein bars. Others tend to have more carbs than I'd want. Also, the availablity in Canada is less than what you would find in the States.

Met-Rx Bars are Horrible do not waste your money

By Anonymous ( - 208.28.186.92) on Saturday, May 20, 2000 - 12:19 am: Edit

for regular protien bars- myoplex deluxe bar by eas (chocolate peanut butter)
for lo-carb bars- either the labrada bar or the hdt, proplex bar

By Airman on Tuesday, July 04, 2000 - 01:27 am: Edit

Those Met-Rx Bars are really damn dry... eat them with a glass of milk if at all. I wasted like 2.89(each) on a Pure Protein bar and Food bar. The food bar was better due to the fact I got more chocolate for my buck. Sports bars are garbage.

By PZA ( - 208.3.198.49) on Tuesday, July 04, 2000 - 09:27 am: Edit

if you guys are looking for a bar that tastes like candy then buy a freeking candy bar.these bars contain a good amount of protien and other added supplements that help your muscle grow,so they don't taste like a snickers well then a snickers isnt good for you either so the choice is your.remeber how gross chicken breasts taste after you've had about 15 in a week so those bars aint so bad.

My favorite is the Pure Protein (Chocolate-dipped) Blueberry Cheesecake bar. It tastes the best IMHO, and if a bar doesn't taste good, I'd be less inclined to eat it.

By zach ( - 172.155.131.88) on Monday, July 31, 2000 - 10:48 pm: Edit

From my experience with protein bars is that there are two different kinds. The first kind contains a fair amount of sugars and carbs. These tend to taste pretty good as a result of the added carbs. If you're looking for a meal replacement go with the bar that has carbs in it. Myoplex Deluxe and Mesotech are pretty good. Also Met-Rx chocolate chip cookie dough flavor is damn good. Lean bodies aren't bad either. I'd have to agree that Promax bars are damn tasty and cheap too. As for the high protein low carb bars, these do not taste as good but generally have less calories and little or no carbs. Solid Protein Bars are pretty tasty as are the double fudge met-rx protein plus bars or keto-pro. Generally stay away from the peanut-butter flavored ones when you looking for a low carb bar. Also aou shouldn't consider these bars as a meal replacement, but as a supplement to your diet. Stay away from Twinlab Protein Fuel Bars like the plague, they are the nastiest tasting bars on earth. The thought of eating another one makes me want to puke. Chocolate Mint flavoring can be good as well, but you'll get sick of them quick.

BioX bars are the stuff, but don't taste like it.
21g protein, 37 carb, 7g fat...YUM!
I bring one to work every day, they are like 99 cents. And since I don't feel like bringing a shaker and milk and powder to work it works out great.
The power bar tastes good too, but its way more expensive like $2.50 each.

I like the cookies and cream promax bar. I also like the taste of the new simply protein bar by EAS in the chocolate mint flavor, but what is the deal with 4 grams of Sugar Alcohol? Why is that in there? I carry 40 different bars in my nutrition store, and so far The Promax bars get my vote.
