Hey guys, I'm a 19 year old male. I'm 6'1" and 170lbs. I've been lifting faithfully for about 7 months. I feel stronger, but there's not much of a change in the way my body looks. I want to be "cut" like the rest of the guys in the weight room. I've decided that I'd like to try taking a supplement to enhance my workout. I'd really like to know if I should go for Protein, Creatine, or something different. THANKS!
By Mike Hernandez on Monday, October 25, 1999 - 09:37 pm: Edit
If you're looking to get "cut", then you're looking for good muscle definition. I've had success with a combination of routine and supplements. For your routine, add more cardio or more "drop sets" - lower the weight and do high reps. For supplements, creatine helps you build lean muscle, so that's probably the way you want to go. Protein will help you put on mass, not just lean muscle (at least, that's what it has done for me). My daily supplements are:
Multi-Vitamin
Chromium picolinate
Yohimbe
Creatine (5g)
I like to take the creatine AFTER my workout because it keeps me from getting too sore by replenishing the muscle tissue I've stressed. I workout three times a week and have seen good results. Since January, I've gone from 183 lbs and not in shape (round is not an acceptable shape) to 192 lbs and much leaner and stronger. I'm 5'10" by the way.
My main advice: be patient. When I was 19, my metabloism was so high I couldn't gain weight at all. I'm 24 now and I have to watch my weight carefully or I balloon up.
Hope this helps.
-Mike

Hey Mike
Thanks a lot for the long message...I'm getting ready to give creatine a shot...I've been lifting with a friend for a while and we're both going to try it...
If it's possible, could you elaborate a little more on the "drop sets"? I usually do 3 sets of 10 during nearly every excerise but the bench. I've heard that it's better to do more weight less reps, and vice versa...I'd gladly try something new, but I just want to know which way so I can dedicate myself to it for a while.
THANKS!

Hi,
From above readings I believe Creatine is not a protein source.
I need to gain mass, so is it recommended that I take creatine and protein supplements together?
thanks

to really gain mass, use EAS phosphgen HP and or AST HSC creatine formula as well as their meal replacement meals such as Myoplex Mass and Ny tro pro 40.i have been on this stack for 3-4weeks and my body mass has increased from 190-215 lbs of solid muscle mass.these companies are the best.EAS and AST.no one else compares.

Take Iso-Pure Natual Protein it is the best stuff to buy....... 50 grams per shake.. and a rule of thumb for the serious body builder is to take in about one gram of protein per pound of body fat so get in thouse 3 shakes a day... and I highly recommend CELL-TECH... Osmotic Acceleration Technology.

LoL 25 lbs of pure muscle in 3-4 weeks my right testicle, you cant even get those gains on steroids. You might of gained water weight yes, but that much muscle isn't humanly possible.

Hey, how are ya.
I just recently bought this MHP Trac w/ NADH as well as arginine in it. Iam looking to trim and cut my body, looking for some great defination. I was debating within the thoughts of doing a protien diet as well. How would this combination work out to give me the results I am looking for? Or what could help me better than the protein diet

Hi i am 17 years old and i weigh 78 kg.
i was just wondering how much protein i need per day, and also if creatine would be right for my age.
also i want to bulk up, what r the best supplements and workouts for this?
By Aaron ( - 64.12.104.38) on Wednesday, October 04, 2000 - 10:27 pm: Edit
if you want to bulk up, nutritionally i would suggest that you take your bodyweight and multiply it by 1.5, that is that amount of protein you should have. Now multiply your weight again by 3, this is the amount of carbohydrates. Now spread that over 5-6 meals a day, with an equal amount of protein/carbs ratio in each meal. so for 78kg(171.lbs) i would suggest that you eat in the neighborhood of 257 grams of protein and 513 grams of carbs. if you are eating 6 meals a day that is 42 grams protein and 85 grams of carbs in each meal. pretty simple, eat every 2-3 hours. supplement wise, first off i would deffinetely suggest a good postworkout whey protein(companies like AST, prolab, EAS, Met-rx), and a good post workout carb source(gatorade, powerade, sports drink). you can essentially make a meal out of that. 2 scoops of whey in water and 85 grams worth of carbs from the sportsdrink. creatine really works for any age but there is that unfortunate 10-15% that it does nothing for. a multivitamin is great because it is impossible to have all your daily nutrients from food alone. as you progress in your training, touch on others like glutamine, anti-oxidants, other amino acids, zma formulas, the list goes on(unfortunately so does your budget) workout wise, individual vary, just like their diets. structually base it AROUND this:
work each bodypart only ONCE a week
3-4 exercises per bodypart
2-3 sets per exercise
4-6 or 6-8 reps per exercise(i prefer the first, big muscles are built with big weight, dont cheat tho)
2 - 3 minutes of rest in between sets
sessions should only last 30 minutes to an hour
now just fill in exercises that you like for each bodypart
remember what you do in the gym accounts for only 10% of your gains, the rest is made up with good nutrition, adequate sleep (7-8 hours), and good supplementation.

Hi, I am 15 years old. I am 6'3 and 195 pds. I have been using a Protein drink for 4 weeks now and i haven't seen much of a difference. Alot of people are telling me Creatien is the way to go. I am not sure but others say it can be bad for you. But I don't know. Should I take Creatien of should i stick with the protein drink?
By Dorian ( - 38.38.56.232) on Thursday, December 21, 2000 - 12:55 am: Edit
It takes protein and hard work with plenty of rest to build muscle. Creatine will not do it. I know the stuff that people say about creatine, but all it does it trap water into the cells. It does not build them. I would stick with protein and keep on working out. You may take some time to see results but that is the whole idea behind this sport. It is not an overnight thing!Dorian

The only way to build pure muscle is to train twice a week and lift heavy weights and go beyond
the point of failure take a good protein drink throughtout the day whey protein is the best try a whey protein with a bv 150 plus, take one in the morning and 1 before a workout ,try this routine for 3 months for ultmate muscle gains
1hr routine
monday:
squats free weight :reps10 :sets :2
bench press reps:8 :sets:3 to failure
wide grip chin ups:sets:1 reps:try8 then increase every 2 weeks
shoulder press using barbell:reps:8 sets:2
bicep curls using barbell reps 10 sets:3
go to extreme failure on each set
tricep pull downs :sets 1 :reps :10
tricep dips :2 sets of 10
this along with a good protein drink and a good diet will make you a monster it takes at least 1 yr of solid traning for ultime strenght

okay. i have been going around on this board for a while and i keep seeing posts that say how people are cutting up and creatine was one of their suppliments or how they own their fat loss to creatine. BS: no one dropping fat or cutting up for a competition should be using creatine! a big reason, creatine makes your retain water in your muscles keeping them fuller, but at the same time you lose that "cut" look and the deep definition lines.someone who is at 5% bodyfat and has dropped excess water for a show looks much better( competition wise) than someone who is at 5%bodyfat and is retaining excess water. secondly, creatine has way too much sugar( if you buy a creatine with dextrose or any simple carb, such as phosphagen HP or cell-tech) for someone in a cutting phase. i could give more reasons. but bottom line, anyone cutting up neeeds to get off of creatine till they are at their diesired bodyfat %. well that is my two cents. i hope someone has change for a nickel.
lift big, eat big, be big

Sorry anon, but that is a bunch of crap. I agree with joe. And if you are geeting your source from the french, it is bs too. The carcinogenic crap they found was in meat, being charred, or burnt. Not powdered creatine. So again, to date No one has said it causes cancer. Now they even think creatine may limit brain damage.

As said before, Creatine is Naturally found, so associating it with any kind of disease is inaccurate. Creatine owes its popularity to the fact that most of the Mr. Olypia for the past few years have dropped Protein, Whey and Soy for the likes of Creatine as it helps "enhance" the muscles better than other supplements. My recommendation, try Met-Rx Mass Action - it has Creatine, HMB and TMG combination. Solid workout and Mass Action twice and day everyday will give you Creatine 10% - Very vital to be big. Go for it!

GUYS!!!GUYS!!!GUYS!!!PLS LET ME CLEAR UP THIS BIG CONFUSION ON ALL THE SUPPLEMENTATION ESPECIALLY PROTEIN & CREATINE..FIRST LET ME SAY THAT I AM A NATIONALLY CERTIFIED PERSONAL FITNESS INSTRUCTOR-
AMERICAN COLLEGE OF SPORTS MEDICINE
NATIONAL STRENGTH & CONDITIONING ASSOC"FEDERALLY ACCREDITED"
AMERICAN COUNCIL ON EXERCISE
FITNESS INSTITUTE INTL...VERY WELL QUALIFIED..AND CURRENTLY STUDYING NUTRITION!!!!
LET ME SAY THAT MOST SUPPLEMENTS DONT DO WHAT THEY CLAIM..THE ONLY ONE RESEARCHED IS CREATINE!
CREATINE IS PRODUCED IN THE BODY NATURALLY..USING THE SUPPLEMENT ONLY PUT MORE IN STORAGE, SO YOU CAN TRAIN LONGER(THATS ALL)AFTER ABOUT 3 WEEKS THE BODY IS USE TO IT..(OVERSATURATED)AND THERE IS NO BENEFIT..SO IN OTHER WORDS ALSO CREATINE IS LIMITED IN ITS BENEFIT..LASTING ABOUT 3 WKS!!IT ALSO VOLUMIZES THE CELL SO YOU LOOK BIGGER...
NOW..PROTEIN-THE BIG MISCONCEPTION...YOUR DIET SHOULD CONSIST OF APPROX 60% CARBS,APPROX 20/25%FATS, AND 10-20% PROTEIN...YES 10-20% THE SMALLEST PORTION OF YOUR DIET SHOULD BE PROTEIN IF YOU ARE DOING WEIGHT RESISTANCE TRAINING..THE MOST IMPORTANT ENERGY SOURCE IN THE BODY IS CARBOHYDRATE..IT FEEDS THE BRAIN, STORED IN THE MUSCLE, ITS IN THE BLOOD, AND AN EMERGENCY SUPPLY IN THE LIVER..THE REASON FOR A HIGH CARB DIET AND LOW PROTEIN CAN BE EASILY EXPLAINED..BUT THATS WHY I PAY TO GO TO SCHOOL....BUT EVERYONE HAS IT WRONG IN THE GYMS...SAVE YOUR MONEY AND EAT RIGHT AND USE PROPER TECHNIQUE AND EXERCISE SELECTION WHEN TRAINING..AND DONT OVERTRAIN...I AM EXTREMELY KNOWLEDGEABLE IN THE AREA OF EXERCISE SCIENCE..I AM A PERSONAL TRAINER IN BOCA RATON FL
HAVE BEEN IN THE FITNESS INDUSTRY FOR 16 YEARS...I WEIGH 190 RIPPED LBS, 6 PK ABS, I EAT 1/2 LB CARBS DAILY AND LOW PROTEIN!!!!!!!!!!!!
NEVER USED SUPPLEMENTS EXCEPT A MULTI VITAM/MINERALS!!!!!I TRAIN HARD WITH EXTREME DETAIL TO MY TECHNIQUE..IN THE SUPER SLOW FASHION AND I DO LIFT VERY HEAVY WEIGHT....BUT VERY METHODICAL..IN BODY BUILDING ITS NOT HOW MUCH YOU CAN BENCH PRESS ...BUT HOW WELL YOU BENCH PRESS.......I HOPE THIS CLEAR UP SOME OF THE MYTHS AND MISINFORMATION I HEAR AND SAW IN SOME OF THE RESPONSES TO THE QUESTION.

YOU DO HAVE A POINT...THE TRAINERS ARE USUALLY FAT OR BONEY AND HAVE A PIECE OF PAPER GIVEN TO THEM OVER THE WEEKEND FOR A COUPLE HUNDRED DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!THATS NOT MY DEAL GUYS.......
I AM WORKING ON MY MASTERS DEGREE IN EXERCISE SCIENCE...ANYONE "INTELLIGENT"READING THIS WILL KNOW THAT I AM RIGHT ON...IT WILL TAKE SOMEONE INTELLIGENT THOUGH..NOT A GYM RAT THAT KNOWS ALL THE MYTHS SURROUNDING GYMS...........
I WOULD NEVER WORK IN A GYM...#1 THERE IS NO PROFESSIONALISM THERE..#2NO MONEY THERE #3TOO MUCH ILLEGAL ACTIVITY..SUCH AS STEROIDS.........

ACSM, CSCS, CPT, ISSA, etc. Nice, I know them all too. And actually I have NO certificates from any yet. I will be getting one from ACSM, but that is only because it is required for the exercise science degree. SCREW CPT.
Well good, I am also doing exercise science. But I don't care right now. All I know is, if you have all of this credit, and the degree, sound like you know something.
LET ME SAY THAT MOST SUPPLEMENTS DONT DO WHAT THEY CLAIM..THE ONLY ONE RESEARCHED IS CREATINE!
I haven't done this for 16yrs like you, or have the degree behind me yet, but I do know FOR A FACT, that CREATINE IS NOT THE ONLY SUPPLEMENT RESEARCHED. For being smart like you claim, you should know this. I am not about to post 100's of studies on supplements, and the ing that make up certain ones, but for god sake, read ACSM, JAMA, JAB, CEP, IJSNEN, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, etc. (hope these words weren't too big for you, or I hope you can find out what journals they are.)
You better review the studies before you say creatine is it.

Neither. It has no calories so it won't add fat. But it will make you look bloated because of the water retention, so you won't look any better, you may even look worse than before the diet. Also if gaining muscle is you aim, then use the creatine and eat, eat a lot. Don't try to lose weight, losing weight loses muscle. And above all, and get this in your head : YOU CAN'T GAIN MUSCLE AND LOSE FAT AT THE SAME TIME ...

Big Cat, i have to disagree with your statement that you can't lose fat and gain muscle at the same time. If you combine a good cardio program with a good muscular workout you can do both.
However it is difficult because you' re going to have to eat a lot more (low fat food) since your burning twice the amount of calories.
By Big Cat HH (Bigcatmod) (213.224.83.174) on Thursday, October 18, 2001 - 12:56 am: Edit
Thats sort of the whole point, as long as calories are high enough to grow there is an excess. To lower body-fat you need to rely on the combination of a higher metabolism and catabolic hormones. Catabolic hormones are only excreted when you burn more calories than are available or when on a sub-caloric diet. Hence there is a conflict of nutrition regarding growing and cutting up. Catabolic hormones reduce fat, but they also rob protein from the muscle. So its not only impossible to gain while cutting, its counter-productive as you risk losing muscle mass.
But if you have a counter argument, I'd love to hear it.
