I'm not a heavy smoker, and I am trying to quit. But I was just wondering if smoking does have a direct effect on muscle growth?
By justin_bed on Saturday, October 30, 1999 - 09:00 pm: Edit
f your a smoker you should just cancel your gym membership right now and go home and smoke your life away because there is no way anyone can get into shape while smoking. your body won't allow itself to get stronger

No, smoking won't affect your muscle growth much, if any. Think about it, you never knew anyone that was built that smoked? It may take some of your breathe away, making that last rep more difficult, but that's about it.

I read an article in M&F a few years ago by the late IRON GURU that stated smoking 1 cig will inhibit (pardon the spelling) the body's ability to absorb vitamin B and C for up to 6 hours. Whether this is fact or fiction I dont know, but if one looks at all the other side effects of smoking, that should be reason enough to not lite up. I personally have have smoked off and on for over 15 years, tried to quit a number of times. the few occasions that I refrained from smoking for a month or two, I felt 100% better and needed a much shorter rest period between sets which would lead me to believe that I was performing a much more efficient and beneficial workout. But that info is coming from a guy who cant seem to give up smoking, so what the do I know?
Giving up smoking is in everyone's best interest.
Take it easy guys.

No matter who you are, try to quit smoking, not only does it destroy your body, it doesn't make any sense. Stop being a puppet for these big corporations who don't give a shit about you, give up your old ways where you thought it made you cool, because smoking makes you smell bad, it destroys your brain, and your lungs. I'm sure if you quit smoking, your body will make more gains, since your vitamin absorption will increase and be more efficient, recovery and efficiency in the body will increase. Wake up people, you DON'T need to smoke!!!!

Anonymous is right! Stop being a puppet for big corporations! Besides, the uplifting emotional effects of smoking cig's aren't drastic. So, why smoke cig's? Smoke weed!

From my experiences, I have concluded that smoking marijuana and cigarettes will effect strength / muscle gains by some degree, depending on how much you do.I read studies that said pot lowers test. levels. I notice that when I quit, I get stronger and slowly begin to gain more muscle. But at the same time, I have had periods when I was smoking alot of pot and cigarettes and I still made some good gains. So what is to believe? I'm playing it safe for now by cutting back cigs to socially only (less than 10/wk)and smoking pot maybe twice a week. Everyone reacts differently, so this issue is further complicated. Anyone else out there want to share experiences? Thanks.
By Anonymous on Saturday, February 12, 2000 - 01:57 am: Edit
I'll share my experience. I smoked some bud and it made me all hyper and after I cleaned the whole house and organized everything in site, I went to the gym had so much freakin' concentration on my sets it was incredible! I wasn't scared of the iron at all and I stacked it on a put it up. Then I took a little hit afterward had all these awesome thoughts and fell asleep before I even hit the pillow. It was just great. Also, I make gains regardless of smoking it never or twice a week. I read it doesn't affect your testosterone at all. And sex is even way better on it to be honest.

Smoking and bodybuilding isn't a good thing to do. But if you are a smoker here are some little facts you should know. When you smoke it reduces the cells that carry oxygen to your muscles. Though this happens naturally as you work out, when you smoke it will happen alot sooner. You will notice this effect when you get a "burn" as your doing your reps.
By Anonymous on Saturday, February 12, 2000 - 10:45 pm: Edit
Oh, well. You've got to enjoy life, right?
By reality check. on Saturday, February 12, 2000 - 11:29 pm: Edit
To JASON, arent you the guy that said bodybuilders get fat in the off season to stretch thier skin? Even by making such an idiotic statement proves that you should be asking questions, not answering them. People come to this site to be educated by some one who is knowledgable on certain topics, dont give input if you dont know what your talking about. False advice harms people that take your words as fact.
By _jason on Monday, February 14, 2000 - 07:15 am: Edit
Dude I am right... How am I right. Well let me tell you why. If you know bodybuilders, like I do. Considering well I know a wack bunch of them. They eat CRAZY foods on there off season to gain weight to allow for there muscles to gain rapidly. And if you read my posts you' realize I don't spread false information. If I am talking about something I don't know much about it I state it. Why do you think people gain unneccessary weight to begin with when they work out? Do you think people can gain just with muscles? Impossible. You'll get crazy stretch marks. Hence the term. FAT TURNS INTO MUSCLE. It's not a standard bodybuilding "saying" for nothing. Your just another flamer on this posting area. They need to moderate this to get rid of you'z. And if I was wrong? Why not prove me wrong instead of saying im a bumbling idiot on one remark? hmm.. wonder why?
By Deano Bravo on Tuesday, February 15, 2000 - 05:51 am: Edit
Fact#1: bodybuilders in the off season gain the extra weight so they can lift heavier poundages, thus, gain more muscle. It is in no way related to stretching muscle or skin or anything of the sort. Fact#2:An increase of only 2% in bodyfat can equal up to a 4% increase in 1rep max lifts. They also need to take breaks from the severe rigors of contest dieting which can devistate your body if such low bodyfat levels are maintained for extended periods of time. Not all body builders mass up in the offseason such as Shawn Ray and Milos, but they do increase thier body fat ratio for 4 or 5 months. per year.
Not to be a bonehead, but who ever reality check is, he is correct in his statement. Even though he has the personality of "the peoples bodybuilder" (and thats probably who it was) a Jackass..... he still has just as much right to post his message as you do yours. He just needs to learn some manners.
By Anonymous on Tuesday, February 15, 2000 - 06:53 am: Edit
I doubt "Reality check" is the people's bitch, seeing as the people's bitch is grammatically challenged, and he is not.
By Reality check on Tuesday, February 15, 2000 - 09:04 am: Edit
To jason, I can see that some one else already answered your challenge and proved you wrong before I had the opportunity to do so. And yes I have read most of your posts, and would advice anyone who wants to make any progress to not listen to you're advice, because your answers are bull. To Deano Bravo, I'll give you a little more respect because its obvious you know what you're talking about. Yes i was rude to the kid, but people like jason and the peoples bodybuilder piss me off by trying to give advice when you and I both realize they know shit about what they're talking about. If I was new to the sport I would'nt want to be getting advice from a self professed guru wannabe, would you?

hey guys, why dont you watch the last five minutes of pumping iron, when Arnold blazes up a joint and laughs about it!

Hey guys, why don't you watch the last five minutes of " M. Ruhl's mom crazy"? It's about M. Ruhl's mom and I. Here's a synopsis of the story. We're both fitness fanatics and we meet at a gym. As I walk past M. Ruhl's mom, she laments "Gosh, this workout isn't getting me anywhere." I step over and I say "How about I pump you up?" Being the horny ass bitch she is, she, without hesitation, just rips off both of our clothes... A whole lot of raunchy shit happens from there and after the session M. Ruhl's mom says, "WOW! What a workout!" as she's covered in both of our sweat and cum. The last five minutes of " M. Ruhl's mom crazy," M. Ruhl's mom spends it massaging the soreness out her pussy from my immense dick's penetration as she blazes up a joint and continues to revel in the orgasm I gave her!

smoking does prohibit some gains in muscle, but it also increases your motabolism in a small way. If u insist on smoking quit in the off season and use it pre contest to lose thoes extra hard to lose pounds.

I would just like to say that when I was in 10th grade there was an 11th grader in my Biology class. He was 17. He was the biggest son of a bitch in my school. I swear there wasn't an ounce of fat on him. At the time he was the biggest person that was ripped like that I seen in person. My point is, that he smoked, drank, smoked wee, shit he partyed 5 times a week. And he wasn't like some people where there like that all there lives, he was a small little shit in 9th grade. Later.

On the issue of smoking. There is something in the air called free radicals. Have you ever cut open an apple and watched it turn brown this is the catabolic affect of the "free radicals." They are in the air we breath! Take vitamins a,c,e, and beta-carotene to counter this effect on your muscles. Drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes speeds up the free radical process to detiorate muscle tissue. So in essence you would be working against yourself. A little food for thought.
Yours truly,
NECK

Very good post anon, and l would add, that free radicals exist also because of the water and air polution. That's why anti-oxidants such as A,C,E, Beta Carotene, Lycopene, Selenium, Co Q10, NAC, must be consumed in much bigger quantities than the R.D.A had been established around 60 (!!!) years ago.

I know lots a people that smoke and are strong. the only thing it changes is your areobic capacity.
By Dorian ( - 38.26.142.205) on Saturday, December 16, 2000 - 03:18 am: Edit
I don't know about that anon., studies have actually proven that smoking increases carbon monoxide. carbon monoxide enters the blood stream, which supplies the muscles. It never leaves the blood stream, it will build up over time, until it destroys your blood. that is why alot of chronic smokers need to get their blood removed and cleaned. That is why migraine headaches occur. so I guess I would say yes it also interferes with anaerobic abilities.Dorian
By hardcore4life ( - 152.163.201.189) on Thursday, February 22, 2001 - 05:21 pm: Edit
I smoke only the kind and I bench 275 for 6 or 7 reps. I find that 1 or two bonghits before a workout increases my concentration and mind/muscle link. It also helps my appetite cause the shit I'm takin makes me not wanna eat. 2 more bong hits after the workout and the soreness goes away and I can stand up after an intense leg workout without grunting.
By FlyBoy (209.51.16.99) on Thursday, June 07, 2001 - 06:51 pm: Edit
Dorian,
Carbon Monoxide (CO) is removed from your blood, just as Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is. However, the chemical bond between CO and Oxygen (O) is 30 something times stronger than the bond between CO2 and O. CO is removed from your system, just at a much slower rate.
If CO was *never* removed from the bloodstream, people would be falling over dead from a pack of cigarettes or a smoke filled bar. Besides, for those of us that live in big cities, how much CO do you think you breath in every day from vehicle emissions? Plenty to kill you is it *never* left your boodstream.
Study your chemistry and biology before rambling crap like this.
I do agree that smoking does impair anaerobic and aerobic performance. If for no other reason than the buildup of tar in the lungs which, thankfully for all those who have quit, can be cleaned and the tissue repaired over several years after cessation of smoking.
By Dorian (12.90.111.80) on Friday, June 08, 2001 - 03:57 am: Edit
I am sorry fly boy but I think it is you that better look into the books before you open your mouth. I know for a fact that co stays in the blood at levels, and in time it causes these situations. If you don't beleive me then I think you better go to a intensive care unit where people are dying from co piosoning.I was subjected to co and it is in the blood at a lesser level. my father died from this shit my grandfathers died from this and how many more? No I think you need to study a bit more before you try to tell me this shit. What do you think black lung is caused by?I guess no one suffered from this situation( and I guess no one still does). I don't really give a shit if you don't beleive me but If you are one of those guys who smoke then I guess you will find out for yourself.
Dorian

I've been a smoker for about 15 year and it is probably the most difficult habit to kick. ive been working hard for the last eight months and i have made allot of gains. but cig smoke does effect the bodys oxygen intake and and the bloods ability to flow into muscle. my opinion is work hard in the gym and make an investment in your health to try and quit.
