Bench press at 50 pounds-How many repetitions can you do?
By Anonymous ( - 142.204.83.49) on Tuesday, March 21, 2000 - 06:38 am: Edit
I'm not a powerlifter either, I don't use extremely heavy weights, but I do see results, i rather concentrate on proper form than load up the bar. I don't like bench pressing, i rather use dumbells, so i'm not that great with barbell presses. I moved up only to about 175 recently for bench press with the bar.
By Nate Dogg on Tuesday, March 21, 2000 - 08:13 am: Edit
50 pounds? Why? I don't waste my time with such light weight. Even if I do it's only during warm ups when I do maybe 10 to 12 reps. Otherwise I try to do at least 6 to 8 reps with the heaviest weight I can possibly lift. And anon is right, it really doesn't matter. I could care less what other people bench.

I went from 185 for 10 reps to 235 for 10 reps in 8 weeks. Just regular working out and using Cytodyne ZMASS with Pinnacle Androstat6 Poppers. Hoping to hit 250 for 10 reps within a few weeks! Working out is so fun when you are gaining.

I was 33 when I first started working out.
My first attempt was with 90 lbs...it seemed
like a ton...
Now 10 years later I'm 43 and have gotten 315lbs
for my max...I've never trained for strength..
My bench just improved with time and determination. For some this is nothing, but for
me and remembering where I started...300 lbs was
a goal I never dreamed possible...and now it
is a reality.....Keep on pumping

my best bench is 360 lbs. at a 240 lb bodyweight that's not a helluva lot for my size but i'm happy with it for now i'm shooting for 400 lbs. i'd like to get there by the end of this year but it's gonna be hard seems like from when i started i gained strength really fast until i hit 315 then the gains have come a lot slower but the weight doesn't really matter as long as you're lifting as heavy as you can and you're making gains don't let anyone discourage you . remember eat lift grow

I worked hard and now I'm up to 250. I know it's
not alot but what I don't understand is I can't go
any higher. I've been at 250 for 2 months, what
can I do to break this rut. I appriciate anyone's
help.

When I first started I could only benchpress about 135lbs. and I weighted about 250lbs. I use to hate to do chest, but my workout partner would make me.He use to tell me that the strenght would come later just to make sure that I had good form and now (6yrs. later) I can bench 405lbs. for 6 reps. and have MAXED out at 500lbs for 1 good rep.and I now weight 325lbs

Im 8 and i weigh 112 pounds now.
When i started working out i weighed only 70 and could only bench the bar with difficulty. Now i add 2 45 pound plates on each side plus the bar. That`s 5 times 45 pounds but i cant calculate this yet =( havent learned it in school.

a couple of comments 1. you always include the 45lb weight of the bar 2. I find that decline presses work the chest better than flat. Oh yeah, I started out a year ago doin like 100lbs and now I do about 250 (DECLINED!!)

I have a question. I'm a 29-year-old male who's been lifting weights for only half a year now. At this point, what should an average bench press be for a guy like me? I honestly have no idea what's good. I use about 135 for 5-6 reps, but as far as a one rep max I have no idea what is average or good.
By John ( - 194.30.248.60) on Tuesday, August 22, 2000 - 12:09 pm: Edit
The National Strength and Conditioning Association has printed a book about estimating your one repetition maximum. So about your pounds and reps it says that if you can do 135 pounds for 5 reps, you can bench press 160 for 1.
By HITer ( - 195.200.13.176) on Tuesday, August 22, 2000 - 07:32 pm: Edit
Try using the 'Brzycki Formula' to predict your 1rep max.
Predicted 1RM = Weight Lifted/1.0278 - 0.278X
Where X = number of reps performed to failure
This formula is based on noted near linear relationship between the number of reps to failure and the percentage of maximum load. The relationship however is not quite linear beyond 10reps. Therefore the formula is only valid for predicting a 1RM when the number of reps to failure is less than 10.
Or if you don't want to use that then there is loads of 1RM charts on the net. So look at a variety to get a rough idea.

I just started weight training after about a 15 year layoff. Due to form and just being out of shape, I could only bench 145lbs my first day. It has only been 2 months and I just benched 205lbs. Your muscles do have a memory (even after 15 years) and bounce back. Hope this is incentive to keep us all going! Thanks

When I was 227lbs I was able to INCLINE 315lbs for reps (8 - 10). Flat bench who knows, who cares. The majority of your chest is upper and I always hit that first. I am significantly lighter now, and only able to do 275 - 295lbs for reps.
TTT -getting 2 or 3 reps is still doing very little for you. Try cutting the weight down, and doing 5 - 8 reps.
fballplayer -150lb increase in a year in a half is a huge gain..........

some of you guys think that benching 250 or so (which isnt a lot in the first place) is even more amazing on the decline...well heres a news flash...decline bench pressing is easier than flat...and flat is easier than incline...so get that straight before you go around thinkin that benching a lot on decline is some wonderous feat.... idiots

I just have a question. What has this world come to? Even my friends are like this. One kid says "I'll kick your ass," then the other kid says "No you won't, how much can you bench press?!"
I don't mean to waste up space, I just thought I'd bring that up.
