I started weightlifting in high school to rehab a broken wrist and to lose much needed weight. It became a hobby and eventually a lifestyle about 1 1/2 years ago when I began to compete in bodybuilding. In high school I was about 240 lbs with much less muscle and I lost about 40 lbs.
I competed in my first bodybuilding show in October 2006 and came in looking flat and soft. I embarrassed myself, but I love the sport and I knew something had to change, and that I wanted to come back the next year and blow not only myself away at the change, but also blow away others with the transformation I had made in only a year.
After my first show, I blew up to nearly 220 lbs. That is when I knew I had to make a change - throughout the course of 2006-2007 I made my diet very strict and followed it closely. As the months and weeks neared this October, my confidence and willpower were fading, however I had a great support team throughout. This includes first and foremost my girlfriend Jessica, my trainer/nutritionist Guy Cisternino, my family for supporting me no matter what (and buying the supplements and food), WNBF Pro Lisa Hendrick for her great encouragement and many other fellow competitors including Stu, Sammie, Bobby, Niel, Chris, and my roommates. With a support team like that, it was nearly impossible to come off track.
On October 27, 2007, I took 8th place out of 10 in the Men's Novice Middleweight class at the INBF New York State Bodybuilding and Figure Championships. Although disappointed with my placing, I could not have asked for a better transformation.
Stay true to yourself, put your faith in the Lord and don't let anyone get in the way of your goals; the minute you let someone sidetrack you, you have set yourself up for failure.
