After: By early September I was tipping the scale near 240 pounds. I couldn't walk up the single flight of stairs that led to my apartment without losing my breath. I was at the heaviest I had ever been with no sign of slowing down my steady progression. I figured I'm lighter now then I will be in a month, so if not now then when?
All throughout high school I was very athletic—participating in wrestling and working out using power lifting to increase my strength—yet I always had a lean BMI so I never had that big powerlifter look to me. Freshman year in college I got more into bodybuilding and made great gains putting on ten pounds of lean muscle in the first two semesters (I was still small by my standards. I wanted to be 250 w/7-8% BF).
After getting into a serious long-term relationship, nights at the gym got replaced with nights at Olive Garden and slowly but surely I found myself spending more time with her and less time in the weight room. After two years the relationship ended but my distended gut stayed fully intact. Hardly any of my clothes fit me anymore and I lacked the self confidence to put myself back into the game so I knew something had to change. I'd have to say that my ex was probably the sole motivating factor in me making the changes that I had to make to get to where I am (and am going) so in the end it worked out for both of us.
I started out very slowly. At the beginning I couldn't run more then half a mile before I had to give up. But soon half a mile turned into a full mile, and one mile turned into two, and once I reached two miles it got easy to push myself to run three or four miles a day with a quick 30 minute workout afterwards. I started seeing the most gains when I hit the two mile mark so I'll describe my workout at that point, but if you can't do two miles in a sitting then don't sweat it cause it probably took me a solid month to push myself to that point.
All of these are 8-10 reps with 4 sets unless otherwise stated.
Rest
The only supplements I was on was On 100% Whey Protein, fish oils, and multi-vitamins.
MOTIVATION-MOTIVATION-MOTIVATION!!! When I was in high school, my motivation was to be the biggest and strongest guy in my school. When I got to college and realized my competition—to being the biggest and strongest— were the biggest and strongest at their high schools... I got a little discouraged despite my initial gains. I started thinking to myself that it was pointless. Here were guys who had a 20 pound head start on me and I had to work that much harder to get to where they already were. That compounded with the relationship was enough to wash all my motivation away. This time around, my motivation is to be healthy and content in my skin. At the beginning stages my motivation was my ex which was all I needed to get me started. Now that the balls rolling my motivation are the mirror and my own drive. Just realize that finding your motivation and staying motivated is the key to your success.
One tip is to take before and after pictures. I did this every week on Thursday so I found myself pushing myself to the limit Sunday through Thursday just so I could take that picture and compare it to the week before.
