I was an athlete in high school. Once I went off to college my weight got out of control. I spent the majority of my nights out partying - drinking a lot of alcohol, and then binge eating on late night stops to Pita Pit and Bruno's pizza. My weight constantly fluctuated. It was like a light switch - some days I would eat healthy, other days I would eat sugary and processed foods. I topped the scales off at 164 lbs in my junior year of college. Enough was enough; I knew I had to make a lifestyle change. In college, I would go to the rec center and do cardio to make up for the poor habits of eating late at night and consuming too much alcohol.
I never touched the weights. Instead I spent an hour on the elliptical trying to transform my body. I had no idea how big of a positive impact nutrition and weight training had on the body until I set foot in a weight room when I lived in NYC. Soon, I saw my body start to change and morph into a hard body! The rest is history. I was hooked and knew this would be my lifestyle. Then, the competitor in me came out. I admired the females who had the nice hard physiques and competed in figure. I knew it took a lot of discipline, determination, and dedication to get up on stage. Of course, I knew I would be able to do it because of my competitive and stubborn nature.
Currently, I am in my first season as an NPC figure competitor. I placed 3rd in the NPC Cincinnati! My future goals are to keep on competing each year, and to get to the National level and eventually obtain that pro card.
None of this would have been possible if I did not have my trainers Sarah and Oliver McCambridge. They pushed me each and everyday to workout beyond the potential I thought I had. I posted my goal on my mirror, in my bathroom and in my computer room.
It read: "I will place in the top three for my first figure competition in April 2008." This way wherever I went, I was reminded of what I was working towards. Reading it over and over-day after day kept me going strong!
My diet was changing on a weekly basis. My trainers switched my diet weekly depending on how my body had responded to the previous diet. Here is what a sample diet might look like:
Meal 2 Meal 3 Meal 4 Meal 5
Cardio was done on an empty stomach in the morning for one hour. Then, at night after my last meal I did another hour of cardio before bed. When it came time to hit the weights, my workouts were changing on a weekly basis. During contest prep, I did a lot of dropsets, supersets, and tri sets. A typical break down of training looks like this:
We trained doing sets of 4 and kept the reps between 15-20 depending on the exercise. I used lighter weight to really focus on isolating the muscle and getting cut up. Abs were done everyday.
Stop making excuses and transform your life! Set goals and make a plan! Do not give up, no matter what the circumstances. It is all worth it when you reach your goal. This way of clean eating and training on a daily basis is a lifestyle change. I assure you, once you get going you will become addicted. The road is a long one and sometimes it can be very trying. But pushing through makes you stronger mentally and physically. You must always keep focus on your goal. Everyone's journey is unique. You do not have to compete to transform your body. The beauty of this journey is that it is never ending because one can always make new improvements to his or her own physique and set new goals. A year ago I sat behind this computer screen in fear of making a commitment to transforming my body.
I sit behind this screen a year later and I have competed in three NPC figure competitions, and I am working on obtaining sponsorship as an athlete in the fitness industry. The sky is the limit. Anything is possible, I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for me. Your new beginning and future are waiting for you, so go get started! ![]()
