The Best Tips for The Arnold 2011

dot

Here it comes again, the granddaddy of all body building events, the Arnold Sports Festival 2011. You might be excited to see what Mr. Jim Lorimer has brought to life. For over a year over 150 key personnel come together to organize over 18,000 athletes competing from all around the world. It is now a true labor of love that brings this event to you and it is only in Columbus, Ohio.

It is probably impossible to wrap your mind around what has happened to the Arnold over the years. More events in more venues around the city. If you haven't visited the Arnold for a while, it is worth the trip. Whether you are driving or flying into our city the basic structure of Columbus makes it extremely favorable to get around.

Ron Houser is the event committee chairman in charge of transportation. He does a remarkable job of transporting athletes to their hotel and other locations. It is a monumental task that many Columbus natives offer in a loving tribute to the world of fitness.

Every year, it has become a more rigorous task to meet and obtain qualified physicians, nurses, EMT's who are interested and passionate about attending the Arnold. So if you are interested just drop me an Email and I will be happy to forward your information to the appropriate party, like Drs. Griffin and Donovan who both do so much to help.

The Arnold Sports Festival Expo

If your coming to the city by plane, our airport is remarkably easy and simple. Basically set up in the shape of a "T" and all you have to do is go downstairs to get your bags out to transportation, or go upstairs to check in and fly home.

Our city is very simply laid out. There is a large circle called 270 and the main roads are 71 (North-South) and 70 (East-West) that intersect like cross hairs, that crossing is downtown Columbus and the home of the Arnold. The main road in from the airport is 670 West and it literally dumps you in front of the Arnold Expo, Columbus Convention Center.

Once you leave the airport, it connects to a freeway called 670 and if you take it to the West, it will take you directly to the convention Center and the Arnold Expo, get off at the High St. Exit.

Get directions from the airport Here

There are so many events at the expo to choose from that are not packed with people. Skateboarding is off site and held at the Grandview Skate Park. Hockey is all over the city and all the ice is taken.

Buses can transport you from the Convention Center to Veterans Memorial (home of most of the bodybuilding and figure competitions) and also Nationwide Arena. There are lots of volunteer "Host" to help point you in the right direction during the weekend.

Now we feed our doctors and medical staff, but the rest of you have to fend for yourself. There is food at the Convention Center, but allow me to offer this key tip. We have a place that is one block from the expo call "North Market". It has over 35 different restaurants and if you are looking for a place to find organic food, this is it. Located footsteps just West of the expo and it is open from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. through the week and 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday noon until 5.

The Main Street running through our city is High Street with a large Art district just north of expo. Just walk out of the Convention Center and head north on High Street, there are another 100 restaurants just up that road. I would suggest the Lemon Chicken at the "Happy Greek" and that area even has a Three Dog Bakery so you can find something special for that dog of yours.

If you want to venture out I would suggest the following as the top places to eat that are different then those that you would find it other cities. The Spaghetti Warehouse is right across the street from Veterans Memorial. You can actually sit inside of an old railway car and eat.

The German Village Area is directly down south from the Arnold and host the BOOKLOFT, a great place to find 32 different rooms of books at a discount price, it was featured on the NCAA/ESPN shows as the cool place to go.

Places To See In Columbus

What to do at night? Go to bed, ah you are right, sleep when your dead, but since you are here let's give you something to do if you aren't too tired from the events. The ultimate party over the weekend is at the Lifestyles Pavilion with Arnold Party with the Pros presented by Bob Lorimer who is also presenting the MMA fights on Friday night.

This year the Arnold is going artsy, so the Arnold Sports Film Festival is kicking into high gear and the Art at the Arnold is returning for its second year. If you really-really want to get wild, I would suggest our Columbus Zoo. David Letterman has Jack Hanna on almost weekly, and this is his home location, so our Zoo is the best in the world.

Don't believe me, well after you sit an inch away from a Silverback Gorilla, then touch a shark and look up at a Polar bear sitting above you in around a million gallons of water, then you tell me who's is better? You think you got Zoo, bring it!

Gyms in Columbus

Speaking of training, do you want some gyms?

Downtown we have the Metro Fitness Gym, formerly the World Gyms of Columbus. They are the official gyms of the Arnold.

Arnold 2011 Predictions

Now we do have some competitions going on around her so let me throw my predictions in the ring. Men's bodybuilding is awesome and held at Veterans Memorial.

I would look for Dexter Jackson, Victor Martinez, Branch Warren and Dennis Wolf to make the final four.

The Ms. International is always down to Iris Kyle and Yaxeni, thanks to everyone else for showing up, hey it makes the stage look nice. Adela is likely flying off the stage likely with the Fitness International title...again.

BTW, Oksana still should be in a Las Vegas show, she is amazing. Figure International is Ava Cowan, Erin Stern and the edge has to go with Jenn Gates.

Bikini International, WAIT! Do we really have to pick a winner? I mean if they just stand up there all night is that really wrong? Stop picking a winner, cause it makes them go off stage!

Seriously, Columbus is a great city and we are very excited for you to visit us here and we all try very hard to make the event safe, friendly, interesting and exciting. So plan out your day, at least try, get some sleep. If you need groceries, Kroger is our local shopping market and they carry organic, Raisin Rack Healthfood is a huge supporter of the event and they are about 17 minutes from downtown.
