Recipes That You Haven't Tried!

How many times have you eaten the same food day in and day out? For most of us, the arsenal includes, chicken, eggs, potatoes, and oatmeal.

How many times have you eaten the same food day in and day out? For most of us, the arsenal includes, chicken, eggs, potatoes, and oatmeal. Those are the main foods that many of us get tired of.

Even thinking about those foods can make the toughest of us cringe, and not feel like eating. This is also a disadvantage because when you don't like what you're eating, you will not eat as much, which will take away from the valuable calories that our bodies need to grow each day.

The Food Channel

Finding myself watching the "Food Channel" 2-3 hours each day, during my contest preparation, I realized that all food doesn't have to be boring. With a few modifications, food can become interesting and quite tasty. But then another problem arose.

The food tasted good, but required too many ingredients and took too long to make. Because of my love for food and cooking, I decided to cut down some ingredients and replace them with others to make quick and convenient meals. Here are some of my favorites:

Stuffed Chicken Breasts

  • 1 chopped onion
  • Frozen spinach, thawed and dried
  • 1 egg lightly beaten
  • 8 ounces low fat ricotta cheese
  • Salt & Pepper to taste
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, sliced in half, and flattened
  1. Combine the onion, spinach, egg, and cheese mixture in a bowl.
  2. Put a dollop of the mixture into each chicken breast.
  3. Tie the chicken breasts together with butchers twine, or put toothpicks through them.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes.

Ground Turkey Breast Sauce

  • 1 pound ground turkey or beef
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1 cup chopped portabella mushrooms
  • 1 tsp all spice
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • Salt & Pepper to taste
  • 1/2 jar of spaghetti sauce
  1. Brown the meat with the red pepper flakes.
  2. Add the chopped onion and mushrooms.
  3. Put the all spice, salt and pepper in.
  4. Pour the spaghetti sauce in.
  5. Serve over your favorite type of noodle.

Simple Dessert Topping

  • 4 egg whites
  • Maple syrup flavoring
  • 4-5 packets of EQUAL
  1. Beat the egg whites until frothy like whipped cream.
  2. Add the maple syrup flavoring in and whip for 10 more seconds.
  3. Serve over fat-free jello, or frozen yogurt.
  4. Also tastes good plain.

The first two recipes are good for either bulking or cutting. Both pack quality protein and complex carbs. The last one is aimed more toward cutting. When I was in my pre-contest diet, and had the urge to cheat, I made it and put it on some fat-free jello. That constituted to 50 calories and 12-13 grams of protein. Not too bad, considering it satisfied my sweet tooth, and resembled the taste of whipped cream.

The base of most of these recipes came from However, with some modifications, and recipe substitutions, they became bodybuilder friendly. Also, many shows on the food channel offer healthy recipes such as "30 minute meals" which are healthy meals made in less than 30 minutes (can't get better then that, huh?) and "Cooking Healthy" which is specifically made towards overweight people trying to loose weight. However, by watching other shows, and cooking techniques, you will get more and more ideas to help spice up your normal food.

I hope that this article educated you about how simple and delicious food can be. Just because a recipe calls for butter or mayonnaise, doesn't mean that the recipe has to be made that way. Recipes were made as a guideline allowing the user to change aspects to fit his lifestyle more appropriately.

If you want to add protein powder to a dessert, or add more meat to receive more protein, by all means go ahead. I probably will never see you working in a restaurant preparing 5 course meals, but I would like to see you trying out new recipes and ultimately, making some of your own. And remember, there's nothing too complicated to cook!
