Supplement Company Of The Month: Betancourt
There are those major companies out there that everyone hears about on a regular basis and then are those companies that aren't talked about as much but do so much for the industry and have very quality products. Betancourt is one of those companies that produce top products and have the reputation as one of the best by the best of avenues: by the word of the consumers. For those reasons and more, Bodybuilding.com is proud to feature Betancourt as the Supplement Company of the Month. Jorge Betancourt spoke with us about himself, the company, and their plans among other topics.
[ Q ] Can you please tell our readers how your company started?
I used to own a personal training facility in Coral Gables, Florida (Miami) from my gym I met someone who was involved in nutraceutical manufacturing and I began selling products from my gym. The gym I owned was big on personal training and I was discovering that my clients were in need of products that aided in proper nutrition, recovery, and most importantly results. So I got together with the manufacturer to create products that my customers were looking for, however, as demand increased I eventually sold my gym and went into producing sports nutrition products nationwide to meet that demand. Then eventually, we attained a cGMP manufacturing facility of our own.

[ Q ] What made you decide that you should start your own supplement company?
I developed a passion for helping people reach their goals, the thing I loved most about bodybuilding was being able to see and feel the results of hard work and I always felt good when I could help my clients achieve the results they were looking for. When it came to getting into the sports nutrition industry it was just the next obvious step for me because I could reach more people and help them to achieve the results they were looking for.
[ Q ] Can you tell us about some other important people that helped you out in the beginning?
My wife has always been my biggest supporter and she has been with me every step of the way during the growth of the company. Her and I started the company back in 2002.
[ Q ] Can you tell us a little more about yourself and your background in the industry?
I've been involved in bodybuilding for about 20 years now, I won the Teen USA's in 1989 and the Teen Nationals in 1990. In 1991 I became the youngest person to ever win the overall in the Southern States. This meant a lot to many because Miami is arguably the number one hot spot for bodybuilding and fitness in the southeast and I still defeated the competition. As a teen champion I met and became friends with many of the young prodigies from that era. As I began to shoot for magazine covers I became friends with some of the top athletes and supplement company owners in the industry and I use that combined experience to continue to not only provide top level athletes with the products they need but to stay innovative as well.
[ Q ] What are some of your top products right now?
It's tough to narrow it down, our Bullnox pre-workout has developed a huge following and was nominated for pre-workout of the year. No one had thought of providing hormonal support to enhance the pump and the intensity during exercise before. However, despite this, some are arguing after reviewing the Big Blend, that it is the best tasting protein powder on the market. I knew we had a hit when we were testing the flavors as I had my customers in mind the whole time, it's only a matter of time before everyone discovers that there is something better out there, and that something is Big Blend. Our other top product which is very popular with athletes is the Bullrush, essential amino acids, 2 times as much L-citrulline as the competition, antioxidants like acai, electrolytes and a hormonal support blend. It's the most complete recovery formula and any serious athlete that hasn't tried it doesn't truly know what they're bodies are capable of in terms of performance and recovery.
[ Q ] Are there any new and exciting products that you are coming out with soon?
Definitely, one of them is top secret, if you thought our chewies were innovative in terms of making candy out of amino acids, then wait until you see what we do with the protein bar competition. What I can tell you though is that we just released our next generation of chewies that are smaller, sweeter, and less chalky. They are indistinguishable from candy!
We are also doing a high performance glutamine to help decrease the muscular discomfort associated with exercise and increase recovery. It will include the antioxidant Quercetin, two forms of glutamine, and electrolytes. Then there are more products that where just formulated that we are keeping hush hush because of the innovation; we don't want to show our cards too early.
[ Q ] Is there any other big news about your company that you would like to share with us?
Well as some already know we are manufacturing our products ourselves. The facilities are cGMP and some are finding it hard to trust sports nutrition companies. However my team tests every product and the ingredients before they are put into production and we can ensure the upmost quality in everything we create.
[ Q ] Have you sponsored any people and if so how have they impacted your company and the industry?
We haven't had any pro-level sponsored athletes yet, I have enjoyed representing the brand myself up until this point because it provided me with the motivation to get into shape and be at my best. However, as of recently, we have sponsored a few amateur athletes who we feel are a good representation of the brand because of their hard work and dedication and their love for the products.
[ Q ] Let's say a customer comes to you that is just starting out and can only afford one product. Which one do you recommend and why?
Our Big Blend protein, my years of experience have shown me how hard it can be for someone just starting out to take supplements. The Big Blend protein is low in fat, carbs, and sugar. It includes digestive enzymes to make things easy on your digestive system, and it also includes a large essential amino acid blend. Getting fit and incorporating supplemental protein into your diet is easy if it's like having desert every time.
[ Q ] What do you believe is the best and worst things about the supplement industry?
The best thing about the supplement industry is the opportunity customers to improve their physiques through supplementation. It used to be that to improve your physique substantially, you'd have to spend all your free time focusing on just bodybuilding. However, not everyone has time to eat 200 grams of protein worth of chicken breasts everyday. Not everyone can afford (the calories or the price) to eat the amount of steak that you would need to consume the bcaa's and creatine that you need to improve performance. Supplementation makes it easier for the masses to include performance increasing ingredients into their diet and to take them in at the right times: pre-workout, intra-workout etc.
The worst thing about the supplement industry is that some create products without the customers well being at heart. They hurt the reputation of the whole industry by lying to customers on the labels and that's why customers need to make conscious decisions to support brands that can be trusted.
[ Q ] Before we wrap this up, is there anything else you would like to share or is there anyone you would like to thank or give a shout out to?
