L-Dopa (L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine) is an amino acid that is formed in the liver and converted into dopamine in the brain.

It is essential for integrated movement of individual muscle groups, and is one of the better known treatments for Parkinson's disease. L-Dopa can help alleviate some of the symptoms associated with the disease such as trembling, rigidity, and slow movements.

Parkinson's Disease:
In the United States, the prevalence of Parkinson's disease is 1 per 625 people, though this increases with age, as indicated by the mean onset of 55 years of age. Symptoms usually begin in the upper extremity, and are usually unilateral (one-sided) or asymmetrical at onset.

It has also been suggested that it helps boost libido, although there has not been enough studies done to prove this.

Parkinson's disease occurs when the concentration of dopamine in the brain is depleted. Dopamine apparently does not enter the brain from the blood, and is ineffective when it is medically administered.

L-Dopa enters the brain through the blood and then it is converted into dopamine. This is not a cure, but for some, it may significantly improve the quality of life in people who suffer from Parkinson's disease.

People with Parkinson's Disease that take L-Dopa may experience some side effects including nausea, loss of appetite, cardiac irregularities, and psychological changes. Some people have even experienced visual and/or audio hallucinations.

Low blood pressure is another side effect that is associated with L-Dopa. This is often the case during the first few weeks, especially if the dose is too high. Lots of fluids should be consumed and increase salt intake to help maintain normal blood pressure.

It is recommended that you consult your professional health care provider before supplementing L-Dopa into your daily diet.
